Our Favorites Music Videos from June 2013

We've got a lot of ground to cover today, so let's go ahead and begin..

DEER TICK have been one of America's favorite bands for three years now. They belonged to New England long before that. The new music video for "The Rock" lets fans get up close and personal with Machiavellian front man John McCauley. The new album from Deer Tick, Negativity out September 24th

AM & SHAWN LEE are probably in discussions to being the most underrated live acts in music today. It's not something I say lightly. Following my example, my friends have been stunned by how invigorating and alive their sets are. With a vibrant new album - their second collaborative effort called, La Musique Numérique, AM & Shawn Lee expand on their already groove-worthy pop. Every song on these records is clearly steeped from the minds of two individuals with keen ideas and are willing to experiment. They wrap up their current round of shows at The Griffin in San Diego tonight.

YEAH YEAH YEAHS debuted a new music video shot at the Empire State Building. “Despair” is the second single off the NYC-based trio’s album Mosquito, on Interscope. The video for “Despair” was produced by Noisey. Mosquito debuted at #5 this spring on the Billboard Top 200. People are listening. And watching.

RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS are an unapologetic band. They make punk and rock music. They don't really like labels so much which means you are apt to see and hear just about anything at a live show. (I think that's pretty cool.) Their latest album is The Wolf You Feed. The new video is "Blue Ghosts."

Three years ago, VIKESH KAPOOR performed at Howard Zinn's memorial service in Boston, in front of Zinn's family and colleagues (including Noam Chomsky). Inspired by Zinn's lifelong battle against class/race injustice, Kapoor spent the next two years in Portland, Oregon working on a concept record based on a related newspaper article. His debut album, The Ballad Of Willy Robbins, out this Fall, chronicles the brutal but hopeful story of a working class man who slowly loses everything: ambitions, health, family, shelter. The album was co-produced by Adam Selzer (M. Ward) and features stellar participation from Nate Query (Decemberists, Black Prairie), Jeff Ratner (Langhorne Slim) and Birger Olsen (Denver). Kapoor just wrapped a run of dates. Just in case you missed him, here's a new live video filmed at the Star Theater in Portland, OR on May 16th.

One of the new 'underground' bands I think will make big waves this year is Chicago's TWIN PEAKS. Their debut record, Sunken, is coming out July 9th on Autumn Tone. Shot on Super 16mm Kodak Color Negative Film by Director Ryan Oh, here is the new music video for "Fast Eddie."

Hard Rock and Figure Skating.. Who would have thought?? PISSED JEANS can bring the noise. "Romanticize Me" was director Joe Stakun. The song appears on the band's new album, Honeys (Sub Pop).

SMITH WESTERNS published the video for “Idol” this week. The song appears on their latest effort Soft Will (on Mom+Pop). The video is shot, edited and directed by Sandy Kim and produced by Colby Hewitt. “Idol” is a dreamy pop song but the video is anything but.

JAPANTHER is the music and art project of Matt Reilly and Ian Vanek. Known for their unconventional live performances, the duo has appeared alongside synchronized swimmers, giant dinosaurs & BMX bikers, atop the Williamsburg Bridge, with giant puppets and marionettes, and in the back of a moving truck. Now, they’re gearing up to tour the US in support of their new album, Eat Like Lisa Act Like Bart, which was released via Recess Records. Here's a two-fer of new videos from the band. The first is for "Something To Do." It is followed by "Stolen Flowers." National tour dates kicked off yesterday.

DEAD BOOTS are gearing up "Verónica" LP available July 16th, 2013. The band formerly known as 'Tab The Band' will release the record in Boston at the Middle East the next night. These guys put on a tight show, this is one you won't want to miss. Here's the music video for "Saturdays."

A Benefit for Brown Bird's David Lamb

No one likes to see their friends in a bad way. A Benefit this Thursday evening in Boston will shine a bright light on one of New England's finest bands; BROWN BIRD, consisting of David Lamb (guitar, banjo, percussion, vocals) and Morganeve Swain (fiddle, cello, upright bass, vocals). Lamb, who carries no medical insurance, is battling leukemia. The event at Brighton Music Hall tomorrow featurin an all-star contemporary lineup of friends: Tallahassee, Joe Fletcher & The Wrong Reasons and Coyote Kolb will raise funds towards those efforts.

Brown Bird have played an important role the last few years, having made their mark in Providence and in Boston, the pair have toured the country extensively the last 16 months. They played a stunning set at last year's Newport Folk Festival - joining the ranks of immortal performances at Fort Adams. They have exported their music - acting as ambassadors for New England - in venues around North America.

By the end of April, it was becoming increasing clear that wasn't right with David Lamb. He seemed uncharacteristically weak after shows. David was soon after in the hospital, being treated for severe anemia and dangerously low blood levels. It wasn't until a few weeks later that physicians were able to diagnose the musician with a form of leukemia for which David is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment.  This regiment would be taxing on anyone, but it's even more crushing when you are uninsured.

Please get familiar with this band if you're not already. David Lamb is a gift and Brown Bird is an important band. We need to help them through this. Listen, buy an album. And if you can give, please do. If you're in the Boston area, attend tomorrow's show at the Brighton Music Hall. Tickets are available for $15. It's going to be a wicked good time - for the greatest of causes.

These are good people who have influenced a lot of people! Similar fundraisers are planned for Kittery, ME on July 5 and in Providence, RI on July 6. Readers: please send us updates on any other events.

WORLD PREMIERE - It isn't through fire but with rain that we find out how great STEVEN ROTH is. Roth puts on one of the most fiery live shows we've seen in ages - his songwriting and his passion were what motivated Adam Duritz and I to select him to play this year's Outlaw Roadshow in Austin. Now having wrapped an extensive tour of the east coast, Steven Roth is releasing a masterpiece of a music video for Let It In - the title track from the new album.

The record is classic Roth - excitable and amazing. This song takes it down a notch, and in doing so, showing the band's full range and showcasing the rich production values on the record. This is a winner:

DIRECTOR: Liam White
PRODUCER: Michael Popp

 Steven Roth
Margot Danis
 Jerry Clarke
Michael Popp
Spencer John Olson

ABOUT THE VIDEO - "It's a tale of love, and revenge," texts Roth to me in his description. (This could be the understatement of the year.) A little background on the concept, writes Producer Michael Popp. The video is a throwback to 1970's era exploitation genre films. Many of you may know of the subgenre within this called "Blacksploitation Cinema" in films such as Flash, Superfly, and Blacula. Another sub-genre of exploitation cinema, "Rape & Revenge," - wherein a movie typically begins with a woman being wronged in some way, usually involving a rape, then spends the rest of the film exacting revenge on the men who have wronged her - is what our video harkens back to. (References include the films I Spit on Your Grave and Last House on the Left).

Matt Sucich - My Only Problem With You

For somebody that anticipates and prognosticates a great deal, I still get surprised a lot. And in this case, certainly, that's very good news for both of us. MATT SUCICH (pron: Sue-Sitch) made his debut on the world stage at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN, receiving high praise and pleasant comparisons from Andy Langer (Esquire Magazine) on his “Best Other Bands Of Bonnaroo” list - “Because this Queens singer-songwriter is trying to break your heart. What appear at first glance to be simple love songs quickly reveal a Wilco- and Iron & Wine-like depth (and desperation).” There were appearances in NY for CMJ and in Austin for SxSW.

2012 was a banner year but it got much better in November, as Sucich released his 2nd full-length album, Layers, to a capacity crowd at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall.

Then came The Outlaw Roadshow. We selected Matt to play for our audiences and he never looked back, delivering a masterful set for our crowd (15K were served over two days!). It was so good that during the grand finale of our second show, Matt who was attending this one as a fan - was spotted by us in the crowd and called back on stage to close the two day event with Adam Duritz, Filligar and others.. It was a magic moment!

The impacts of the last two years are just starting to ring true. New opportunities are unfolding and with good reason. Matt Sucich is one of the best voices emerging on the east coast today. "My Only Problem With You" is a song Matt wrote and recorded during the Layers sessions that is only just emerging now. Just like the man himself, the time invested is well rewarded.

buy it on vinyl / lyrics - both are below:

Sucich played big at the Outlaw Roadshow in Austin this March

My Only Problem With You
Before this nightmare I used to dream,
and before this mess I used to feel clean,
and before this dance I was a dancing machine,
and before this wreck I was a '57 Chevy.

Before this text I was an easy read,
and before they laid the concrete I was a trampoline,
and before this broken glass I was a glass of gasoline,
and before this cloud I was the fire underneath...

So how come my only problem with you is your problem with me?
And boy, you sure know how to let a good thing go.

Now my heart's beating out of my chest, but it's probably just the caffeine
and my legs are shaking, but that's probably just the breeze.

Before this test I learned a few things,
and before this curtain, honey, I stole the scene,
and before this bow I stood as straight as a tree,
and before I let go I could not let go of anything...

So how come my only problem with you is your problem with me?
And boy, you sure know how to let a good thing go.

Natural Disaster by Roem Baur

by Chris Fullerton

Chris Fullerton is a Music and Film writer.
He lives in Austin, Texas.

NEW THIS WEEK - “From the very beginning, this was a haunting muse for me,” San Francisco-based singer/songwriter ROEM BAUR explains about his new single. “I could see this woman’s eyes before I ever had a song. In writing it, I wanted to capture something wild and uncontrollable with a helpless feeling of love-lust for this creature.” The song opens with a pulsing rhythm, primal like a heartbeat, before exploding into a chorus proclaiming the self-destructive force of nature that is this woman, meant to represent all those things we want but know we not only don’t need, but will eventually tear us down.

“She comes, she comes around like a hurricane
She blows, she blows like a twister in the hard rain
She burns, she burns like wildfire white flame
I’m caught in the path
Of a natural disaster”

Musically, the song blends elements of pop, 60s R&B and straight-forward rock & roll, layering horns and B3 with hand claps and soulful backing vocals to create an infectious groove. This all serves as the perfect backdrop for Baur’s vocals, which range from a sensual growl to an all-out belting of the chorus, the last proud boast of a trapped animal.

“In the recording studio, we never set out to make such a big record. It just happened when we started fleshing ‘her’ out. Like this storm brewing in the distance.” Baur says.

Rather than sum up the track with some clever line about women and weather, let’s just say this track is fun and robust, and should be a part of any summer playlist.

BEGINNING TO GET REAL - One of the most spellbinding sounds of 2012 is back in a big way. DANIEL AND THE LION will release a new EP record on June 28 on Rotown Records. "Final Night" is the result of some serious soul searching from musical provocateurs Jimmie Linville and Daniel Pingrey, a pair of unlikely superstars who took us by storm last year. They were one of the really big winners out of this year's Outlaw Roadshow With a quiet intensity and a joy for creating, the pair have an air of authenticity for them that shines through the brightest of their songs. You're going to want the music - and then you're going to need to experience the fun of a live show!

Star & Micey and Tallahassee

this original poster design / original fonts
by Frank Germano of

The new EP from Memphis' STAR & MICEY was produced by Dennis Herring (Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse, Wavves, Ben Folds), captures the spririted four-piece's incredible, fan-favorite live performances. (For those who haven't yet seen the band perform live, the stage is really a cross between a raucous live jam and a hand-clapping gospel church!)

Featuring a blend of acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, bass, and drums, all four members of Star & Micey sing and contribute layer after layer of harmonies to augment their original blend of songwriting. Love this band - one of the best live acts in America today. Arrive and you will be in love!

Touring these days behind their brand new record "Old Ways," TALLAHASSEE are one of the very best live acts in New England right now. The very name "Tallahassee" is a Native American word meaning, “old town” - a name that is fitting of the band's celebration of what's pioneer and early roots. The band has a golden, soaring sound that's dripping with soul. The band infuses these sounds with their own brand of indie rock and the results are creatively charged magic!

At the center of the fray is the hard-to-miss, former New England Patriots prospect Brian Barthelmes (guitar and vocals) a giant of a man with a big creative heart. Expect the unexpected from this band. You certainly will not be disappointed in this show!

Sic Alps - She's On Top

We've been following these guys for some time now which explains some of my surprise when I searched our back catalog and found there were no postings. We'll fix that today. San Francisco psych rockers SIC ALPS put out a great full-length record (self-titled) last year and they've followed it up this month with the "She's On Top" three-song EP as they're on the verge of their tour of Europe. Fans of the band will find the new garage-y sounding low fi single to be reminiscent of early Black Keys - but even more unraveled. Both have a lot of guitar in common. Think you'll agree this band's blue collar, unpolished output is well worth your time.

Gauntlet Hair

FOR THIS VIDEO - "We wanted to create a darker piece, utilizing locations all over the city of Chicago," writes video Director Ryan Ohm. "Together, I think we created an atmospheric, eerie film that leaves the viewer with a strange sense of uncertainty, not sure how to feel. As DIY oriented filmmakers we embraced the guerilla shooting style, venturing quickly from one location to the next, shooting on the subway on the sly, and digging the adventure the whole time."

THIS IS GAUNTLET HAIR - The band's second album, STILLS, will be released July 16 on Dead Oceans. Recorded in Portland, Oregon's "The Cave" studio and produced by Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), the album reveals Gauntlet Hair's deep affection for goth industrial and post-punk music that influenced them. My first run in with them band came two years ago this month as I caught them in a particularly stellar NXNE lineup in Toronto; with Deerhoof, No Joy, and Dodos. (Whew!) Probably one of my three favorite nights of the festival. Since then we've watched the band grow to the point where we find them today: an ever more influential mover and shaker on the international indie scene. A handful of summer tour dates have already been announced..

At The Movies: NOW YOU SEE ME

Thoughts on Film...
by Chris Fullerton

Chris Fullerton is a Music and Film writer.
He lives in Austin, Texas.

Summer is the official movie season for overblown action films, rebooted franchises and unnecessary sequels, but director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, The Transporter) pulls a sleight of hand and sneaks in a thrill-ride who-done-it about magicians.

NOW YOU SEE ME starts with a mysterious person scouting four struggling magicians, J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), his former assistant Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), mentalist Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and street con-artist, Jack Wilder (Dave Franco). The group is brought together at an abandoned apartment where they discover an elaborate plan, and after a year of training, they re-emerge as The Four Horsemen. Their debut performance in Las Vegas is capped off with an amazing feat…they use an audience member to rob a bank…in France. This daring performance gains them the attention of not just the FBI, but also Interpol, who pair up grizzled federal agent, Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) with his international counterpart, Alma Dray (Mélanie Laurent). The pair reluctantly team up to solve the mystery and soon find themselves butting heads and questioning each others’ motives.

Another party who is keenly interested in the Four Horsemen is Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), who has made a small fortune by debunking the secrets of magicians. Bradley is contacted by Rhodes and Dray, but is reluctant to work with them, as there’s no money in it for him.

Like a good magician, I’ll refrain from revealing any of the secrets, but what follows is a fantastic game of cat-and-mouse, with the lines often blurred between who is a feline and who is a rat. Leterrier uses his action-movie background to keep things exciting while not overpowering the story.

THE VERDICT - While some might argue the assembled actors don’t constitute an all-star cast, like an OCEAN’S 11, I think the argument could be made that the quality of acting in NOW YOU SEE ME is at a much higher level, with solid performances by all involved, and in the context of the summer movie season, one might argue that the performances are damn near Shakespearean. NOW YOU SEE ME delivers exactly what it promises, a fun, entertaining film where you’ll miss the big picture if you get lost in the details, but once the big picture is finished, you’ll find yourself putting the details into place. Nothing up my sleeve here, but a good summer movie.

FOLKS - We're All Dead

“‘We're All Dead’ is inspired by J G Ballard’s short story 'The Life and Death of God' and is an atypical Folks song is many ways. It's more heartfelt and timeless. We started to perform the song on our recent tour with Band of Skulls and it became a band favourite. It is a great counterpoint to our other songs.

We’re not the first band to be inspired by J G Ballard - Joy Division, Klaxons, even Madonna have referenced his dystopian vision. We're living in the Ballardian nightmare and there's so much doom and gloom around. This song is our perspective of a hopeful and optimistic future.”
In addition to playing sold out dates with Band of Skulls, Folks also toured with Miles Kane, Noel Gallagher & We Are Augustines.

Folks are Scott Anderson (vocals), Michael Beasley (guitar), Thom Fripp (guitar), Harry Gumery (bass), Wil Ackroyd (keys) and Elliot Barlow (drums).

Fun Times in Babylon by Father John Misty

"Music videos don't need blurbs. It's like putting a brief summary before a Garfield comic strip," says Father John Misty aka J. Tillman. "Also when did everyone start calling them "clips"? A "clip" is an excerpt of a whole, I thought. Whoever post’s this, don't spoil the ending in your blurb, which will probably read like this: "Seattle based folk beardo Father John Murphy mopes around a deserted, apocalyptic landscape (and shows off some of those infamous dance moves) in this Josh Tillman directed clip for "Funtimes In Babylon"."

Scared To Death with Archie Powell & The Exports

ARCHIE POWELL & THE EXPORTS have made a career of grafting prismatic power pop and sardonic, dark looks at the world outside into guileless songs with hooks galore. Archie actually kind of makes it look simple; he is incapable of writing a hook-laden song. Today we have a new video that's perfect for those looking for you video-philes out there and for the enthusiasts of classic horror. Only So Much You Can Do was shot to look like one of those early Eighties VHS tapes you can find in the bargain bin of any rural gas station in America.

For our friends and readers in Chicago, you won't regret seeing these guys play Schubas tomorrow night (6/7) - this is one of the best live sets I've seen this year.. It's an 18+ up and just $10. This is music done right.
