Have You No Direction?

From the World of Advertising

Darth Vader and a bevy of Star Wars characters have been licensed to GPS giants TomTom by George Lucas. (I have to believe this was only a matter of time since impersonators were doing a pretty miserable job and offering up the same.) Upcoming voices: C-3PO, Han Solo and Yoda. (Not sure if I want Yoda's awkward alien drawl telling me how to get through urban traffic, but I'm sure it will sell.)

The viral ad was released unceremoniously this week and has already been watch by many, many thousands of people. If this doesn't satiate the Star Wars geek in you, check out the soundboards I embedded below.

new video ALYOSHA

VIDEODROME SERIES: When I am talking new here, you should definitely know I mean it. I know really very little about today's act. The video was just sent to me minutes ago and I decided to launch. *(take that corporate-owned media!)

Today's subject is the Ukraine's Alyosha - an amazing singer (just a beautiful voice) and a big heart. The performer is devoted to preserving our natural resources and is using her performances to draw attention to environmental protection activities all over the globe.
The video for "Sweet People" was released just this week. Will more Western acts take up the call?

Dennis Hopper will live Forever

Rest in Peace "Billy"

The World today learned of the passing of the great Dennis Hopper. Along with acting in literally dozens of pieces, Hopper's works include a number of our finest modern films. He quickly became known for his precise telling of often wild, unpredictable, undesirable, underfoot characters. In doing so, he brought life to scripts and scenarios I cannot imagine anyone else doings. He was unique. He was special. Hopper will always be one of my silver screen heroes. Rest in Peace, man. You nailed it. You rocked and your work will live on forever...

Dennis Hopper :: 1936 - 2010

George Hanson (Jack Nicholson):
You know, this used to be a helluva good country.
I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.

Billy (Dennis Hopper):
Man, everybody got chicken, that's what happened.
Hey, we can't even get into like, a second-rate hotel.
I mean, a second-rate motel, you dig?
They think we're gonna cut their throat or somethin'.
They're scared, man.

George Hanson:
They're not scared of you. They're scared of what you represent to 'em.

Hey, man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody who needs a haircut.

George Hanson:
Oh, no. What you represent to them is freedom.

Steve Martin at Newport Folk

An Evening of Bluegrass & Banjo

NEWPORT FOLK NEWS FLASH -Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers will kick off the 51st edition of George Wein's Newport Folk Festival at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport Casino on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 8:00 pm. Tim O'Brien and Sarah Jarosz will round out the evening of talented bluegrass artists.

Steve Martin may be known best as a comedian and actor, but the talented performer has been played a banjo musically and as a prop during his stand up, for years. In 2001, Martin played banjo on Earl Scruggs' remake of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". The recording was the winner of the Best Country Instrumental Performance category at the following year's Grammys.

Martin released his first all-music album, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo with Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Tim O'Brien, Tony Trischka and Mary Black. This album won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2010.

In other words, funny man Steve Martin is no joke on the banjo. With on-stage anecdotes that have compared a song's "sadness and melancholy" to the look on his agent's face when Martin "told him I wanted to be a banjo player," concert-goers won't easily forget that Martin is a funny man. The collaboration performances have been known to mix in some of Martin's signature dry wit, but at the core is a tight band playing real bluegrass. With an upright bass, acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, second banjo and deep Appalachian harmonies, it's enough to leave a comedy or bluegrass fan happy.

a new album from Ra Ra Riot

Someone You Should Know

Barsuk releases Ra Ra Riot's The Orchard on Aug 24th

1. The Orchard
2. Boy
3. Too Dramatic
4. Foolish
5. Massachusetts
6. You and I Know
7. Shadowcasting
8. Do You Remember
9. Kansai
10. Keep It Quiet

Ra Ra Riot is vocalist Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos, guitarist Milo Bonacci, violinist Rebecca Zeller and cellist Alexandra Lawn. The Orchard marks the band’s first time being joined in the studio by drummer Gabriel Duquette, who has toured with the band since the release of The Rhumb Line.

The Orchard follows up Ra Ra Riot’s debut album, The Rhumb Line, which was released two years earlier (almost to the day) and immediately hailed as “a blissful chamber-pop breakthrough” in a 4-star Rolling Stone review (who named it the #38 album of 2008)

Editor's Note: I am totally looking forward to new material from Ra Ra Riot - they just keep getting better. But, uh, guys - when are you going to actually name Gabriel a member of the band with a full share? For the uninitiated, Duquette's a tremendous drummer and he makes each player in Ra Ra Riot sound all the better. The proof is in the pudding. Having seen the band play about 7 or 8 times now, they have rewritten and rerecorded some of the older tracks to take advantage of their drummer's skills. I would love to have Gabriel Duquette in my band.

footnote: Ra Ra Riot founding member, Drummer John Pike died in a tragic drowning accident in 2007 - just as the band (which had formed in Syracuse, NY a year earlier) was beginning to celebrate its early success.

the Jake Kerbrat approach

New Music this Week!
Someone You Should Know

Sometimes the Most Simple of Introductions can be the most effective. And this is the way I found the music of Jake Kerbrat, an underground musician and enlightened soul in British Columbia, Canada. That's pretty much all I know. Jake's a pretty tight-lipped guy, as this is pretty much the only thing he's told us...

"I’ve had two dreams growing up: become a pilot, or a professional musician. I’ve worked hard at both, and I’m currently a bush pilot in northern British Columbia. Flying is an enjoyable job, but I can’t give up on the music just yet!" -Thanks for listening! Jake Kerbrat

Needless to say, this song is undeniably pop-tastic. It's got it's dark under belly and while admittedly raw, it's impossible not to catch the hook. And it signals what could be another great career in music. If you dig, head over to Jake's website and download the new album for free. Don't thank me - no finder's fee needed. I love my job.

The Heavy Metal Report: ACARO

words & media by
Shawn SixX

Who is ACARO? The Boston metal band that seems to be popping up all over the place with a vengeance these days. Last weekend ACARO proved to be a heavy musical force to be reckoned with. I caught up with the band to see who they are and what they are doing to garner all this Buzz.

Still sore from the blistering show the night before at Ralph's Diner in Worcester, I decided to check in with ACARO who were set to take the stage at Harper's Ferry in Allston. These guys seem to be burning up live venues and audiences in the Boston area including the 12th annual New England Metal and Hardcore Festival last month. This particular weekend was no different!

photos by Shawn SixX

Frontman Chris Harrell revved up the vocal power to work the Harper's crowd into a circle of pure metal energy. With beads of sweat and a bulging vein on his shaved head, Harrell paced the stage like a caged animal trying to get out. The crowd's eyes were focused, their minds strained as they attempted to mouth each strained syllable Harrell threw out at them.

As I looked to the sides of the stage I heard the scream of guitars from Felipe Roa and Chris LeBlanc - playing as if their life depended on it. If Dimebag Darrell and Ronnie James Dio were still alive, they most certainly would have approved! I could feel the hair on my arm vibrate as bassist Kevin Smith and drummer Jason Fitzgerald held together a low end that was just ungodly! These guys bring every bit of the metal genre to show - and they play with passion. They play to play! ACARO is completely genuine.

ACARO isn't signed as of yet but are producing their first CD now and have their sights on just letting things "happen”. While looking to get signed, they are fine for now just writing and performing kick ass Metal. If you want to see a Boston Metal band that can bring it, look no further.

THE NEW ALBUM & TOUR - Roaming North America with the red-hot Freelance Whales, Sweden's Shout Out Louds arrived in Boston recently, on tour supporting Work - the band's third album (on Merge). Work was recorded in Seattle and produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses).

Shout Out Louds - Fall Hard

Shout Out Louds in Boston - May 7

A NEW APPROACH - After a year of touring behind their acclaimed second record, Our Ill Wills, the band went their separate ways -- singer/main songwriter Adam Olenius to Melbourne, Australia, keyboard/vocalist Bebban Stenborg to Los Angeles, drummer Eric Edman, bassist Ted Malmros and guitarist Carl von Arbin back to Stockholm - and took a much needed break. Olenius wrote many of the new songs in Australia in a tiny room with a little synthesizer, an acoustic guitar and Garageband on his laptop. He passed them on to the others who listened closely from their corners of the world, questioning and challenging him until the songs that make up Work had all passed the test.

Buzzcocks 2010

A Tour Not to Be Missed
by Nick Parker

Monday, 5/17/10 at The Paradise

LEGENDS ON PARADE - Let me put it plainly: the Buzzcocks invented UK Punk. You will excuse me then, if I am a little tongue-tied trying to talk about this band.

Perhaps I can contain myself by beginning with the obvious: Coming out of Manchester UK in the mid ‘70s, the Buzzcocks booked the Sex Pistols’ first show in the North, now immortalized at the start of 24hr Party People. Their furiously blasted music pretty much invented the pacing of the punk track.

Not so politically motivated as The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks most famous tracks, like “Ever Fallen in Love?” and “What do I get?,” are love-songs. It may seem like a strange way to present a love-song I suppose, but theirs is the energy of teenage love, and sex. As we all know (more or less recently!) that passion is an unstoppable force.

It is 35 years later of course. Perhaps they can’t manage that pace – that vigor. I saw them at Axis a couple of year ago, and I remember having those kinds of doubts before the show. Surely they would be a decrepit version of past greatness – fragile now, and to be treated with reverence, but not quite respect…

That night they came out and played six songs, at about 150bpm, back-to-back, without a pause for breath. You would be wrong to count them out.

This could be quite simply the most important show you’ll see this year. Don’t miss a chance to see some history, and to dance your ass off.

Wilbur Theatre Boston, MA – May 5, 2010

WE WERE THERE at the Minus the Bear performance at the Wilbur Theatre. The venue was alive; packed with fans to see the Pacific Northwest band perform the songs from their new album, OMNI. The new record - produced by Grammy Award winning producer, Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket) - explores erotic themes and fascinating tales of human relationships. OMNI showcases the band's evolving identity and their increasing prowess as one of America's best touring bands. Minus the Bear have a series of remaining dates this month. Festival fanatics can check them out at Sasquatch later this month; in August the band joins the Lollapalooza lineup in Chicago.

Naama Hillman covers The Boss

Someone You Should Know

new from Naama Hillman

A LIFE IN MUSIC - “Bruce Springsteen is on fire”, her dad informed her, “says so in the paper.” Naama was horrified. “Is he alright?” she asked. Naama Hillman, you see, got into music young. Naama Hillman is a singer-songwriter-producer based in London UK. Her debut album “Living Room” was released on Rusty Records, leading to successful shows in Israel, USA and Ireland with regular shows in London and across the UK. Her EP “In Between the Lights” was made available for free download on her website, leading to considerable web success.

NEW MATERIAL - Hillman's self-produced her new record “Mid Air” - available now online. Many friends and fellow musicians including Naama’s long time collaborator and husband, Ohad Ezer (Selfish Gene, Shrugged), and Morcheeba’s Paul Godfrey , have helped to add instrumental depth and detail to the album. "Mid Air" was mixed by Jonny Cole (Catherine Feeney, Floetry) and mastered by Alan Douches (Midlake, Ben Folds, Sufjan Stevens).

"Mid Air" goes farther into the creatives and emotional recesses of Hillman's mind - and it's a captivating place. She is one of the most gifted singers of this generation! Give the new material a try - readers can download a free three-song sampler (which includes the track above) at Hillman's website. While you are there, twitter users, you can also pick up a copy of Hillman's cover of The Boss.

Titus Andronicus - The Monitor

On Further Review...
by Nick Parker

Now on Tour:
EU / North America dates

I don’t want to overstate this, but there is something a little self destructive about Titus Andronicus’ The Monitor.

The album is not short of great tracks. It’s not lacking in a voice that’s it's own either. (The band has already lead us into a really beguiling world of working-class lives writ-large... ) Many of the songs on The Monitor move very subtly between contradictions. There is, for example, a lot of clever word-play that smacks of real thinkers behind the scenes. Most of the songs though, seem born of a bleary-eyed state of keg-stands, basement parties, and cigarettes chain-smoked veraciously, so you wonder how they can get their heads straight enough to pull the tracks together.

The answer is that the show is a persona, of course (One give-away: No-one can be that obsessed with New Jersey!). But Titus are nurturing their characters all the time and it is a fascinating world that they are propagating: Working-class kids without much hope, but with each other; Americans through and through, appropriating all the right-wing shit, and letting the rest of us have some pride in the country. This surely is why the songs on “The Monitor” are dressed in Lincoln speeches.

Then again, I could be wrong... Like the massive reverb swells that overwhelmed Titus’s first album, The Airing of Grievances, The Monitor is in many ways obscure – even obscured. The obfuscation often becomes frustrating. The band didn’t need to hide their great tunes behind cloudy effects the first time around, and I would dare to say they don’t need the gimmicks of political rhetoric to block our access to their own statements about living their lives in these times. That’s the self-destructive thing I worry about with this band. Perhaps their stories, which deserve to be told, will be lost in all the confusion.
