Joseph Arthur jams with Mike Mills and Bill Dobrow
Recorded 48 hours ago!
Setlist:
Blue Lights In The Rear View
I Miss The Zoo
Travel As Equals
Black Flowers
TOUR KICK OFF - Joseph Arthur is a damn cool dude. He's made a career of standing out from the crowd. An artistic sort of character with a brilliant writer's mind.
Embarking this week on a national tour with Mike Mills (yes that Mike Mills, of REM) and Bill Dobrow (Plastic Ono Band, more) Joseph Arthur is a name you should again know. And with this new band (this clip represents the only recorded incarnation of this band to date!) Joseph Arthur is touring behind the new songs from his latest, "The Ballad of Boogie Christ." New material and a skilled band... this should be one hell of a tour!
MOMENT CAUGHT ON FILM - Talk about serendipity, I was contacted by Outlaw Roadshow video director Ehud Lazin (SBGNYC) he let me know he captured this crazy impromptu jam before the three players loaded the van, climbed in themselves and departed on the road for tour. Wicked.

New from RUBY ROSE FOX
BRAND NEW TODAY!
STYLE & NOSTALGIA - For purveyors of classic-sounding contemporary acts there has been much to be happy for. With hugely powerful live acts like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings; JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Meyer Hawthorne, Lana del Ray, Fitz and the Tantrums, and a litany of others, we have seen what was once old can be made new again. Today we share a new music video from Boston's Ruby Rose Fox who fits rather nicely into the indie lounge.
RUBY ROSE FOX - In "Neighborhood WATCH" we can hear elements of music's past colored with smoky-but-sweet vocals. The pacing and story are all her own. These disparate elements of past and future make for exciting material and a memorable live set! None of this should surprise anyone. The singer cut her teeth as the frontwoman of New England ska band Mass Hysteria at just age 15 and was touring nationally behind a label-released record at just 18. Having embarked in a completely different (and solo) direction two years ago, Ruby Rose Fox is up for two Boston Music Awards! Let's all keep an eye on this one..

Ruby Rose Fox just added a show!

NEW OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Tallahassee - Minor Blues IV
There is little doubt. One of the big, big winners out of this year's Outlaw Roadshow was Tallahassee. Their brand of endearing, self-effacing Americana-tinged indie rock was a big hit in Austin and again in New York. And we have already released videos of the band playing solo (link: "I Try") and with their friends in Golden Bloom, Daniel and the Lion and PHOX (link: "Searching for Sunlight") We now unveil a video too good not to share. Minor Blues IV is one of those favorite tracks that never goes away. It rises slowly and crests like a wave and along the way, four individuals get crazy synced up. Key musical moments and great friends.. And that's what The Outlaw Roadshow is really about! Enjoy!
ABOUT THE SERIES - All recorded material in this series features top artists (acts that played The Outlaw Roadshow this year, our friends and unique combinations of artists that you will find nowhere else) recorded between the dates of 10/17/13 and 10/20/13.
Much, much more to come!

Kurt Von Stetten - Broken, But Not Undone
RELEASED TODAY
New Music Buzz

AN ARTIST'S RETURN - Two years after releasing two breakout albums (both of which made our 2011 Best of List - one artist having two songs on the list was a first here on rslblog.com. Seriously kids, you need to own these records.) KURT VON STETTEN (The Longwalls) today unleashes a new effort, Broken, but Not Undone, which promises more jangly distortion, altered reality and realized heartbreak. Von Stetten who writes, performs and produces his own music also designs, draws and creates the packaging for his art. In the first new video from the effort, Those That Know, Kurt animates his music video. The results, are both jarring and eye-catching - but they're also instantly timeless.
Kurt's music is really special because it doesn't sound like anybody else's. Or I suppose you could say it sounds like everybody else's music put in a blender and the remnants poured into a tall glass and consumed. Either way, he is operating on a different plane. Pick it up today on a limited edition pink vinyl which comes with a customary download code. Everybody's happy. [Editor's Note: also checkout Kurt's other band, The Longwalls who produced a great "bleak" Americana rock album, Kowloon, this year. Highly recommended.]

NEW OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO OldJack - Whistle Blowin'
For the last three years, Boston's OldJack has been the best rock & soul band in the Northeast, offering soul-stirring live performances punctuated by as many as seven players. Dan Nicklin and members of the band performed a stripped down set at the Bowery Electric during The Outlaw Roadshow, playing new songs from their forthcoming record Everything and Nothing (Dec 21). Our audience was wowed.
Today we have something really cool to share, the video of OldJack's Hugh Wyman, Ryan Peters, and Derek Feeney joining Nicklin in The Garden. Together they perform "Whistle Blowin'" - a new unreleased song from the record. Highly recommended!

Saint Raymond
New Music this Week!
Someone You Should Know
AN INTRODUCTION - At just 18 years old, Callum Burrows, aka Saint Raymond, has been making a great deal of noise on the other side of the pond. Recently featured on the BBC and just announced as the sole support for Haim on their UK and European tours, Burrows has announced that the 'Young Blood’ EP, his major debut, will be out digitally and on 7” vinyl on January 5th through National Anthem (the label responsible for launching Haim, Chvrches and The Orwells to name a few).

NEW SOUNDS - Here's a snapshot of what you're going to get on this one. "Young Blood" is a hypnotic, transformative number that transfixes the listener and has lots of intrinsic appeal (I am sure the marketing geniuses have already figured this out.) We think this is already someone you need to know, but this one has all the makings of one of the biggest global acts of 2014. Dates in the US are not announced, but you know they are coming. You were warned kids. And you heard it from us!

NEW OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Foreign Fields - The Sea
Stars of the 2012 Outlaw Roadshow Summer National Tour - Foreign Fields originally hail from the wintry plains of Wisconsin. The band began working on the modern electronic folk classic, Anywhere But Where I Am (RSL's Best of List), on New Years Day last year. Having no set plan or guide, the album grew naturally as they left their lives in Chicago for hot summer days, skipping stones in the rivers of Tennessee. The band recently released a 5 song live EP recorded in a round one night on tour after a show in Tuscaloosa and named the album after where it was born. The album showcases Foreign Fields' harmonies and unique instrumentation in an even more intimate setting. The group wraps up a US tour with Basia Bulat this week. This is definitely a band you need to be hearing.
ABOUT THE SERIES - All recorded material in this series features top artists (acts that played The Outlaw Roadshow this year, our friends and unique combinations of artists that you will find nowhere else) recorded between the dates of 10/17/13 and 10/20/13.

Little One by The Black and White Years
BRAND NEW SONG - LP OUT IN JANUARY

NEW MUSIC - Last year NPR named THE BLACK AND WHITE YEARS, "a Band to Watch." And in addition to being one of my all-time favorite live acts, they have proven to be one of the very best Electro Rock band in America today.
We've seen them them play songs from their playful, upbeat full-length debut and a few more times behind their cool, precise followup record, Patterns - which really exposed their genius. They showcased that music at the Outlaw Roadshow this year for a huge audience and rave reviews. So, it's easy for me to recommend their new full-length Strange Figurines will be released on Modern Outsider Records in January. Here is an advanced single!

Golden Bloom - Searching for Sunlight (with Tallahassee, Daniel and the Lion, and Monica Martin from PHOX)
Golden Bloom have been one of the best songwriting outfits in the Northeast for years now and have earned a place in the hearts of music lovers (an irreplaceable part) at The Outlaw Roadshow the last few years. The New Song & Album - We are in the very last hours to help the band raise the funds for their new album, a record in which "Searching For Sunlight" (today's song from The Outlaw) appears on.

KASHKA - Bloodlines

Jason Gordon photograph
WORLD PREMIERE
KASHKA will drop her second album, Bound on Jan 14th. We are delighted to share with you today the song, "Bloodlines" for the first time anywhere. The track's ethereal mechanical feel are an excellent foil to singer Kat Burns' soft, nostalgic presence. "As a child I thought I knew everything / but I knew nothing then and I'm still learning.." The Canadian singer/songwriter wrote the song while in Poland, learning about native instruments from Orkiestra Sw Mikolaj. During her travels there she learned much about her family lineage and the words for "Bloodlines" were born. The song concerns itself with the struggle of immigrants in her family's past, as they sought out a better life for their children.
The string elements and electronic effects are ghostly. Burns here has crafted a song that is both mesmerizing and intensely personal. Somehow this one also still manages to feel big, communal and eternal.. Bloodlines is gorgeous!

BACKSTORY - It all started in Parkdale, a west-end neighborhood of Toronto. Kat Burns had recently dissolved her former band (Forest City Lovers) and was determined to rise out of the ashes. Without a clear direction to take, she spent some time exploring new sounds and songwriting styles, which led to a collaboration with longtime friend and producer James Bunton (Light Fires, Ohbijou, Evening Hymns). She found her new direction, and KASHKA was born.

OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Little Brave - Lights Off, New York City
The Outlaw Roadshow has come to mean so much to so many people. The fans, the musicians, Adam & I... And for that reason it continues to be more important. Bands tour with other bands they've met. Artists are influenced. They collaborate. And sometimes they find a way to take part in their own special way and Outlaw history is made. Twice in NY, artists played in other band's sets. PHOX's Monica Martin (one of the most exciting bands in the country and Outlaw Roadshow alums) joined Daniel and the Lion on stage. And then there was our friend Little Brave, who arrived in New York to play with K Phillips & The Concho Pearls. Little Brave, herself an Outlaw Roadshow alum, provided this special One on One Session (a brand new song - which we were happy to record and share!)
ABOUT THESE VIDEOS - All recorded material in this series features top artists (acts that played The Outlaw Roadshow this year, our friends and unique combinations of artists that you will find nowhere else) recorded between the dates of 10/17/13 and 10/20/13. ONE TO WATCH - Today we are honored to debut "Great American Life," from Portland's Ryan VanDorecht. Cutting his musical teeth in previous bands Castella and Sidestar, VanDorecht grows up and out on his new solo debut: Beast of Love. VanDordrecht is a contemporary songsmith on the rise. Produced by Rian Lewis (Crosstide, Ravishers) Beast of Love is an effort in which it's pretty clear everyone is working together. Both Lewis and VanDordrecht are multi-instrumentalists and play on the record.
FREE DOWNLOAD!
On today's debut, VanDordrecht quick turn of phrase is the star at center stage. It's a story the 99% can readily understand
"Ain't Got A Story Left to Tell ... / In This Great American Life / work my fingers to the bone.. / just to get by / in this Great American Life."
The lyrics may lament the capitalist machine's headlock on the American Dream. Far from sardonic or skeptical, this song has a sweet side.. Bouncing above the fray, there's sunny sunny-day harmonica, guitar and drums. The meaning and it's veil are intertwined on Great American Life. This is pop song with a bite - from a songwriter we are going to be watching very closely. I have a good feeling.

OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Boom Forest - Wooden Heart
John Paul Roney is what's next. Playing music as BOOM FOREST, you'll find folk driven by madness and love in these songs.. Something sweeping and timeless but oddly classical and new. A hodgepodge and a beautiful mix of influences at that. With angelic vocals and dramatic use of distortion, driving drums, Boom Forest played a hugely romantic and powerful set at this year's Outlaw Roadshow in New York City. Backed by members of Foreign Fields, this was a formal coming out party for an artist on the rise. And rise like a phoenix he did. You will find evidence of that here on this Private Session video recorded with the artist, solo, in the Garden...

OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO K Phillips - Coal Burner (with Little Brave)
Hailing from Austin, K Phillips arrived in New York with a big chip on his shoulder. He wanted to impress. And impress he did. The restrained frontman is a swaggering poet and the band (The Concho Pearls - which features Austin's Little Brave) hammered home the jive, soul and rock. Our crowd was "leaning into" this tremendous live set. Within minutes a capacity room was hand clapping and smiling wide. I know I was! Video of this is still coming. What we have here now is a really incredible buttoned down performance on piano with K and Little Brave in which they perform "Coal Miner" - both sensational artists have new albums on the way. And this video is pretty much just fantastic.

OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Jay Nash - The White Whale
BEST OF 2013 - After a solid year of touring, JAY NASH spent most of 2012 hunkered down in his Vermont home studio, crafting what would become Letters from the Lost (produced by Bill Lefler & Jay Nash). It was a time for stepping out. This is the first album Nash had recorded outside of LA in many years. And it's insanely good. Here now, for the first time is our Private Session of Jay performing "The White Whale." It's more guitar and storytelling genius providing a unique look into Nash's soul.
The songwriter promises the new record he is currently working on will be his best to date! The Outlaw Roadshow NY marks Jay's second run with us and we look forward to many more.

OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO Mean Creek - My Madeline
Putting on one of the most fiery sets of The Outlaw Roadshow New York, Mean Creek lived up to every ounce of hype - playing a scalding Friday night set. (Video of their performance is still forthcoming.) For a change of pace we also invited the band back for a private session that allowed them to rock on while chilling out. The results, which include this performance of new song "My Madeleine" (from upcoming new record 'Local Losers' 2/18/14) speak for themselves. With our highest recommendations...
