As I write these words electronically, as you read them plainly - character by character, the fact remains that the number one album in the land belongs to The Decemberists. The Portland, OR band of storytellers led by Colin Meloy now occupies the hearts of millions - and the top spot on the record charts.... The King is Dead (EMI's Capitol Records) was released on Jan 18th and has already earned the top spot this year.

How did this indie rock band from Portland make this happen?! Just a few short years (more like 6 years) since I became familiar with their songs, The Decemberists have released three consecutive masterpieces. And most critically, as one of the pivotal American bands - they may help decide the direction of contemporary music.

And after several years of immersing myself quite literally in music from all around the world, it is this band that often springs to mind as a perennial favorite. But that's not what we are collecting here today; today we write about live experiences. It speaks to the fact that the band excels at all aspects of their game. And eventually, songcraft, subtlety and tone often win out. This is most importantly a group of storytellers who can still play the extremes. The Decemberists forced fans to raise a fists in loyal delirium (SxSW 2009 - Listen/Download) and they have made us weep. (Newport Folk 2009. Listen/Download.) And all this from a few players and just a couple of instruments on a stage....
