New and Amazing: Sharon Van Etten - No One's Easy to Love
One of the more rewarding and reliably great things in music is new Sharon Van Etten. She has such a depth to her voice and her songwriting is so intimate and .... challenging. So now has been looking forward to the new full length, Remind Me Tomorrow, more than me. (Yes, there have been song releases and collaborations but it's been a long wait since 2014's Are We There.)
Today's spotlight song is a new song from the record. "No One's Easy to Love" is the singer's latest twisted tale of loss. It's morose and beautifully edgy but not angry. This is life after love. The protagonist here clearly still cares but her heart has been condemned. Van Etten's turn of phrase and breathy vocal incantations are pretty brilliant on this recording. Fantastic album. She's at the Beacon in New York City tonight. Happy Valentine's Day Week.
Yes, there were jerks recalling the years of love's past
As you opened the door and told me how you loved me so much
The resistance to feeling something that you put down before
But keep quiet of it as you could not face it anymore
Too much has changed, I can’t let you walk in in the night
I wish away my love, leave with the dawn
Acting as if all the pain in the world was my fault
Leave me here, my love, don't say goodbye
No one's easy to love
Don’t look down, my dear, don't be surprised
No one's easy to love
Don't look back, my dear, just say you tried
There was a question you asked, "Is your father a man?"
No, but I think you should do ask of yourself the same
What is the difference between now and then? I'm not sure
Prove me wrong, my dear, don't say I lied
No one's easy to love
Don’t look down, my dear, don't be surprised
No one's easy to love
Don't look back, my dear, just say you tried
