INSTRUMENTAL ROAD WARRIORS

Today we tell the story of two Boston bands on the road, headed to the annual INSTRO SUMMIT in North Carolina. Currently the largest all-instrumental music festival in the World, the 5th Annual Instro Summit features 27-plus bands of the surf, soul, rock, and lounge music. This year, Boston's THE WEISSTRONAUTS and THE INVISIBLE RAYS hold key late night slots during tomorrow's grand finale at the event. Even now, they are plowing down an east-coast trek, heading to their instrumental rock mecca!

THE WEISSTRONAUTS feature THREE guitarists, who play interlocking melodic and rhythmic parts, along with the traditional bass and drums rhythm section. Influences range from spaghetti western and spy movie soundtracks to space rock, surf, twang, and more. They are corralled by producer Pete Weiss, who owns Verdant, a lovely studio in southern Vermont. The other members of the Weisstronauts are all busy in far toomany-to-list musical ventures. This tour finds Mr. Weiss playing keyboards as well as the 6 string slide guitar.

THE INVISIBLE RAYS are also a five piece, featuring bass, drums, analog synths, guitar, and projections. The Rays use audio & video samplers in place of a lead singer; the samples are sourced from vintage b-movies, and occasionally from news media. The music visits destinations of progressive, art, and punk rock with points in between. While the band rocks out on a darkened stage a fifth member of the group manipulates old school liquid slides that are projected over the band, along with tightly woven video shorts.

Both bands have been active for over ten years, and have numerous releases.
