WHO THEY ARE / BACKGROUND - The Carolina Chocolate Drops formed in 2005 at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. Since, the three piece ensemble have put their own spin on the traditional bluegrass sound, bringing in aspects of punk, country and folk to the mix. Their latest full length album "Genuine Negro Jig" came out in 2010 to immediate recognition by NPR's All Songs Considered, especially their soulful cover of Blu Cantrell's so-bad-it's-good 2001 song "Hit 'Em Up Style." They released another short EP this year, recorded with New York City's Luminescent Orchestrii, a Romanian gypsy punk band, which continued to blend the lines of bluegrass and other genres to create something fresh - Emma Dessau
