Someone You Should Know

We now deviate from our regular brand of music celebration to spotlight the wicked, frenetic comic book punk rock of Peelander-Z. There are only two ways to learn of the otherworldly Peelander-Z. You can buy a ticket to a show at random, which is interestingly how I came across them, or you can read about them in a super cool music blog. Which is what I think most of you are probably doing today.

Peelander, who have a series of dates including new stops in Austin for SxSW and Summer dates on the Vans Warped Tour, are a cross between the Power Rangers (note the color coordination) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Really. I've caught them three or four times before and each time, I was completely renewed by their maniacal play and odd stage theatre. Appearances can be a little like a Rocky Horror Picture Show performance, lots of props with ridiculously loyal fans driving long distances to mouth the words to barely intelligible lyrics. But you see, there's a niche thing going on here. This band, who have a new album; P-TV-Z (on Chicken Ranch Records) fulfill a part of our collective needs. This is pop culture on overload and this band does it better than pretty much anybody else out there. They open this year's tour right here in Boston.
