The Pavilion here in Boston was the place to be last week. With the cool ocean breeze making this part of the city tolerable, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The tight, explosive set by the John Butler Trio, didn't make it easy to stay cool though. This was another explosive night on tour for the band, known for their Butler’s incredible guitar playing and the trio's tight chemistry. Their tour this year found Butler flanked by two new players: bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Nicky Bomba. They definitely held their own (read on below!)

I have to admit that I didn't know a lot about the group going into the show, but after the performance, I am certainly motivated to learn more. They put on a great show that kept me movin' and shakin' throughout their set, which takes a lot. As a musician myself, I'm keen to what goes into making the music as well as performing and these guys have both going for them. Their style shifted quite a bit over the course of their set, I imagine, drawing from several albums worth of material that they've produced. Post-show, I learned that they're huge in Australia and have won or been nominated for multiple awards as well as having and gold and platinum status for the five albums they have to their credit; I can see how they deserve these accolades!

I loved they way John amp'ed his acoustic through a Marshall and it didn't take him long to break out a banjo and get that rockin'. Also, the band's new bassist, Byron Luiters, looked completely comfortable playing both electric and acoustic-upright basses. I also have to call him Mr. Smiley for the night as evidence in a few of the photos I captured him in. It's a great gig isn't it, Byron! He probably was reacting to the excellent crowd that evening who were really digging the band. Kudos, as well, to the awesome drumming of Nicky Bomba, who had several drum solos sprinkled through the set.

These guys are the real deal! They've been touring since late last year and it doesn't look like they stop for a while. Thanks for stopping in Boston!
