The Beatings are Boston Music Legends

And so begins the months long public goodbye for one of my all-time favorite rock bands, The Beatings. A final show has been announced for Saturday, May 18th.

"We want to thank everyone who supported us these last 20 years. The radio and press folk, the booking agents, Justin who designed our album covers, our family who came out to shows, the producers/studios/engineers/mastering people who made us sound better than we actually do, the sound people at the clubs, Clayton and Mike and everyone who came through Midriff Records and pushed us and dealt with all the stuff we didn't want to deal with.."

NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED

This is the story of a gritty rock band who came to the world's eye because they lied about being signed to a music label - which they created for themselves. And it worked. Midriff Records would also become the home of a number of select northeast bands over the years - every one of them an act with heart.

"Its been two decades since the release of The Beatings first EP, 6Hz, which we released on our own Midriff Records label. Since 1999 we presented 5 more collections for your listening pleasure, saw you on lots of national tours, made tons of new friends and its been a real blast for all involved.

20 years seems like a respectable shelf life for any band and the timing seems right to officially call it a day. This DIY band is done. So we guess this statement acts as both an end of hiatus and break up notification.

"On behalf of Tony, Dennis, Erin and Greg, I want to thank you for having us. It's meant the world to us. Welcome to the country  - Cameron" (aka Eldridge Rodriguez).

Freedom Fry - Ironic (Alanis Morissette cover)

SPOTLIGHT  -   Our old friends in Freedom Fry are up to it again, this week releasing this cover of Alanis Morrissette's timeless, "Ironic." It's the perfect kinda-sorta-feel-good song of the day.

The duo play with the Canadian songwriter's original. The song's playful aspects are soon met with synthesizer, handclaps and harmony on this one. Ironic appears on the new EP, "New Life" which celebrates the birth of couple Marie Seyrat and Bruce Driscoll's first child. Congratulations guys!

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

Live Love from Gangstagrass!

On Fire  - Gangstagrass are a hip-hop/country-bluegrass hybrid who I just love! Everyone in this band and the collaborators they work with are all-stars of performance. This week, the Brooklyn band release a new live album that rewards their fans and provides an excellent entry point for new listeners. Pocket Full Of Fire (March 23) offers a lot to both fans and to the unconverted.

Gangstagrass are Rench (production/guitar/vocals), Dan Whitener (banjo/vocals), Brian Farrow (fiddle), and MCs
R-SON and Dolio The Sleuth. The band were making big waves on live stages before the release of the theme song that would be used for television's Justified. Had them in for radio a bit back.. was one of my favorite sit-down live performances. Just casually exceptional at what they do. Great people with a burning talent..

When You're Ready - Nate Leavitt

The highly-anticipated Nate Leavitt follow-up, I Miss Me Too, will see life next month and I assure you it'll be awakening for new audiences. The first single, When You're Ready, offers all kinds of promise for the record. Here Leavitt's voice sits atop a pillow-soft tone with Leavitt's band, The Elevation, providing perfect backing accompaniment. The album was recorded and produced by Dan Nicklin at Boston's Henley row. Along with featuring Leavitt and Nicklin, the record features Megan Tracy, Paul Myers, and Brendan Boogie.

I've made it no secret that I believe songwriter Nate Leavitt is one of the most gifted musicians in the Boston music scene - he shreds on that guitar and that's only half the instrument of destruction his head and heart are. The protagonists of his songs are hard-luck everymen, blue-collar knights, anxiety-sufferers and solitary figures. One night, I witnessed Leavitt bring a capacity audience of strangers at the Hi-Watt in Nashville to their knees. There were tears flowing and everyone was leaning into the music. That's a special kind of power.

Boston will have a local Nate album release show at the epic Lizard Lounge on Saturday, Mar 30th. Be on the prowl for Tickets are expected to go on sale soon. Warning: this show will sell out.

Something to Love from Idyll Green (Jukebox Gentleman)

When you look up to realize you've found yourself in a world gone mad... love is what you need. The absolute perfect pick-me-up this Valentine's Day is this brand new number from R&B-influenced Idyll Green from San Antonio. The new song is Jukebox Gentleman and it features a beat that cannot (will not) be ignored.

Idyll Green are brothers Rene, Jaime and Abe Villanueva. The trio, previously known as Hacienda, first came to my gaze back in 2009 as the backing band for Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. (It's very likely that the best thing Auerbach will ever do on an album appears on his 2010 solo debut 'Keep It Hid' which featured the fellas from Idyll Green.) Possibly the best live show I ever saw at the Paradise Club in Boston. Super excited about this return!

The new stuff is high energy, laced with R&B and a departure from their rock past. It is a huge return to form for the vital, high energy music from Shakedown. I couldn't be happier to run this on Valentine's Day. And delighted to give you something to love!

New and Amazing: Sharon Van Etten - No One's Easy to Love

One of the more rewarding and reliably great things in music is new Sharon Van Etten. She has such a depth to her voice and her songwriting is so intimate and .... challenging. So now has been looking forward to the new full length, Remind Me Tomorrow, more than me. (Yes, there have been song releases and collaborations but it's been a long wait since 2014's Are We There.)

Today's spotlight song is a new song from the record. "No One's Easy to Love" is the singer's latest twisted tale of loss. It's morose and beautifully edgy but not angry. This is life after love. The protagonist here clearly still cares but her heart has been condemned. Van Etten's turn of phrase and breathy vocal incantations are pretty brilliant on this recording. Fantastic album. She's at the Beacon in New York City tonight. Happy Valentine's Day Week.

Yes, there were jerks recalling the years of love's past
As you opened the door and told me how you loved me so much
The resistance to feeling something that you put down before
But keep quiet of it as you could not face it anymore

Too much has changed, I can’t let you walk in in the night
I wish away my love, leave with the dawn
Acting as if all the pain in the world was my fault
Leave me here, my love, don't say goodbye

No one's easy to love
Don’t look down, my dear, don't be surprised
No one's easy to love
Don't look back, my dear, just say you tried

There was a question you asked, "Is your father a man?"
No, but I think you should do ask of yourself the same

What is the difference between now and then? I'm not sure
Prove me wrong, my dear, don't say I lied

No one's easy to love
Don’t look down, my dear, don't be surprised
No one's easy to love
Don't look back, my dear, just say you tried
