Love And The Zealous - The Outlaw Roadshow Video Session!

The intersection of lives and counting the magic moments are what The Outlaw Roadshow is all about. So many receptive hearts and minds. That is what it was for us all in New York this past fall as we gathered to celebrate life. And this is how we came to work with Love And The Zealous.

It was amazing to see how quickly we fell in step with these fine gentlemen. Singer Richard Love is a unique talent. He delivers stunning vocals and I'm thoroughly convinced most of it comes straight from his heart. Love and guitar player Marcus Leemann started the band out of Texas where the pair spent countless hours killing time, casually scratching out the start of what would soon prove to be a dynamic trio. Joined on bass by Matthew Ramirez, the trio have brought the best out of each other. Described as purveyors of "Southern Rock and Soul Funk," this is a band you need to take note of. Each member has brought influences from their journeys creating a rich environment for creativity. And none has gone to waste.. A set by this act can fill a very large room in a hurry.

Audiences appear stunned for a moment that such strong tones are emerging from three young men, but that's the way the gift of music works... It finds a way to reward those who work hard and believe.

Here they are, recorded in the Garden in New York City. The trio are seated in front of our cameras flanked on all sides by original paintings from celebrated painter Felipe Molina - who enjoyed the sets just off camera - with other artists who had gathered.

The Life Electric - Their Outlaw Roadshow Video Session!

One of the great live music memories of 2016 for me will be seeing a completely immersed, energetic and triumphant Life Electric show at The Outlaw Roadshow New York. Helping close out a wild night of music, they brought a huge ear-to-ear smile on my face as they completely took over a room of strangers and made them their own.

For nearly half a decade now, the five-piece have proved to be one of the great dance rock acts in the Northeast. Elements of dance music wrapped into a wild, machismo rock on-stage sensibility... and a massage that's utterly positive have encouraged thousands to, 'just dance.' These are the elements that exploded for audiences during their victory on the stage in New York during our capacity show.

But how would The Life Electric fare dialed down and in front of our Outlaw Session cameras? Here, for the very first time anywhere, get a load of this moment locked in time: The Life Electric perform their songs surrounded by the phenomenal original paintings of artist Felipe Molina. The genre lines are burned away as only pure performance remains

Star Wars Fix You Need: The Last Padawan

When it comes to Star Wars, so long as it's good execution - this writer and movie geek cannot get enough. A new fan-filmed short story from Danish Director Jesper Tønnes is the Star Wars fix you need. Released a month ago, the movie is starting to make the rounds globally, amassing an impressive 70K views already. (I've already watched the thing twice today!) Happy to relay that it's definitely worth 20 minutes of your life and it'll put a serious smile on your face.

The Last Padawan is simple but nearly flawless, with a handful of gifted friends and almost no budget. The film stands tall over some of the unfortunate George Lucas-led prequels with their massive budgets.

Tønnes, who is an actor as well as a director, plays the protagonist role in the movie himself. The plot introduces us to desperate times in the Galaxy. Presumably the last surviving student of the Jedi Knights, the Padawan is on a mission on backwater world. He walks a path that leads him face-to-face with the Empire's evil Inquisitor.

Kathleen Sieck - The Outlaw Roadshow Video Session!

Emotive intelligence, place-setting compositions and a gorgeous, silky voice are Kathleen Sieck's greatest allies - and they serve her very well on the live stage. Powered by a quiet urgency I imagine most of her songs as the backdrop for cathartic moments in a dramatic film or love stories performed on stage. She's on to something, for while Sieck has been performing for years, her latest material - this newest incarnation - is the strongest of her career.

Kathleen entered our musical lives a little more than a year ago, having played a few dates with Outlaw Roadshow regulars on the West Coast. She was won over by their stories and she wrote to Adam and I with an idea - that she would travel east in October to play The Outlaw Roadshow New York. The only problem, she said, was most of her songs were not new. And consequently, her email was not a request - it was a challenge to herself. She vowed to write and record songs from the heart that were worthy of an invitation.. I had never received an email quite like it.

Completely mesmerized. These new songs are perfect. Kathleen fits in perfectly in this setting - at home with The Outlaw Roadshow, painted on the stage with the original artwork of the gifted Felipe Molina. Amazing work Kathleen. Welcome to the family!

Jon Lewis - The Outlaw Roadshow Video Session!

Upstate New York songwriter Jon Lewis made an inspired appearance at The Outlaw Roadshow New York this fall, appearing in this worthy-watch video. In the session Lewis is joined by frequent collaborator Dave Drago  Tallahassee, Hallelujah The Hills, The Lawsuits, Smith & Weeden, The Grownup Noise, INFJ). The pair are flanked on all sides by original art by painter Felipe Molina

Jon is as prolific as he is artistically driven. Having released three albums in the last four years (his latest are Out To Lunch and Panic Rock) Lewis is a music technician, a full-time children's performer - and, he works in film. The results, while varied, are truly inspired.

One To Watch -  I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a new set of songs from Jon Lewis in 2017. In fact, you shouldn't either. Definitely give his albums (click ~music~ below) a solid listen. He's a solid songwriter and working with some sensational talent.

TIME KILLER OF THE YEAR 2016

In 2016, the world needed all kinds of distractions and as the best thing going, Ryan's Smashing Life, has ripped into the corpse of that pock-ridden and infectious year-long span of days to share what was probably the most amazing time-killer ever..  Can someone pull the damn curtain aside?!!

AWARD - Most Addictive 2016
POCKET MORTYS

The Breakdown - The Adult Swim show premise is simple and yet so very not.. Rick is the weird, misunderstood and too-often ignored weird old due in the family. Morty is his clever and soooo-geeky nephew Morty. The pair are unlikely friends.. (like, think about that photo with the young bobcat and deer huddled together against a fire in an office building, but I clearly digress). Turns out Uncle really is a mad genius and this scientist and his nephew take part in many intergalactic adventures. Rick and Morty has the best plot twists and celebrity guests too. Show just kills me. The characters are flawed and witty. (For instance, the self-loathing mental screams from the weak nephew Marty could be coming straight from my collective unconscious.) Home Sweet Home.

What is this madness? This whole thing exists as a massive wink. It's a huge poke at Pokemon and Pocket Masters, such simple battle and concentration games that you ignored until realizing a billion people were doing it.

In a hugely satisfying and self-effacing twist, the game is inner focused and bonkers. It assumes there is a universe in which a numberless instances of the time traveling duo (Rick and Morty) cross their own paths - creating an abundance of side realities in which there are an infinite number of Rick and Morty configurations. The game (yes, I am finally here) involves the concept that (this is quick math) an INFINITE # OF RICKS (each brilliant and egotistical over many universes - ARE GREATER THAN ANY AND ALL MORTYS) this premise is central as we see our duo battling Ricks in many worlds who wield multiple battle Mortys.

POCKET MORTYS assumes that Mortys are battle and gaming commodities and the "Rick / Trainers" can power-up their fighters through wins. Add a whole ton of hilarious "Rick-isms" along the way and what you have is a game you can live with. And live with and live with. This is the chicken dinner you were looking for. [rslblog.com scores it a solid A- and our 2016 Time Killer of The Year!]
