Quiet Life

ARTIST EXPOSURE - Portland's Quiet Life set out in a van to make good music and collect life experiences but what's really happened in they've formed a cross-country roots rock revolution, their numbers bolstered the last few years, their sound has flourished on the road. As a band, they caught a break that night snow fell on the stretch of highway between Nashville & Memphis, when the cars bundled up like an endless string of red Christmas lights. Quiet Life are Sean W. Spellman, Ryan "Lenny" Spellman, Thor Robert Jensen, and Philippe "CC" Bronchtein.

They’ve toured with Dr. Dog, Alabama Shakes, The Lumineers and Portugal The Man. Wild Pack, the band's latest effort, was produced by Adam Selzer (M Ward, Blind Pilot, Decemberists, etc.) in Portland, Oregon and was mastered by Joe Gastwirt (Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, etc.) For the making of Wild Pack, Quiet Life enlisted the help of notable Portland musicians such as Dave Depper (Fruit Bats, Menomena), Nathan Junior (M Ward, Dandy Warhols), Laurel Simmons (Alela Diane, Indians), etc., to create a record that embodies the spirit of their live show and in the end, remains true to the aesthetics of roots rock and roll.

Jay Nash - Can't Get Enough

WORLD PREMIERE - NEW SONG

FIRST NEW SONG - Recorded at Hotel El Ganzo, Mexico at one of their El Ganzo Sessions, Jay Nash is allowing us to post this beautiful performance of Can't Get Enough. It's the first of many new songs to come. Nash reached out via text last night with the details about the new song and the record, while hopes to finish this summer and have ready for release in October or November. Timelines and Deadlines aside, Nash is one of the most gifted performers we've worked with the last few years. And if this new album is of the caliber of his latest effort, Letters From The List (RSL Best of 2013 List) then we will all have much to be excited about.

Memorial Day 2014

WARRIOR
When its missing then you want it more
It isn't right
Turning, turning out the door
And back to this
Leave it like it was before
And let me out
Must've been the end of the story

Giving it all, giving it all away
You're gonna wake up someone
Well study it all
The wings, the crowd, your face
You're gonna end up like one

Well, trouble at home
Travel the way you say
The road dont like me
Travel away
Travel it all away
The roads gonna end on me

Man, they like me
Cause I'm a warrior, a warrior
Stand on my feet
Dance the warrior, the warrior
Where would I be?
I'd be a warrior, a warrior

Now the strangers have caught on
And they're riding in the backseat
The rivers gonna wash all
Yeah the river it spoke to me
It told me I'm small
And I swallowed it down
If I make it all
Im a make you want me

Hey!
Trouble at home
Travel the way you say
The road don't like me
Travel it all, travel it all away
The roads gonna get on me
And I'm small
The roads gonna get on me
Well if it gets it all
The roads gonna end on me

Hey!
Hey, hey!
Like a warrior, a warrior
Dance the warrior, the warrior

FILE IT UNDER:
IN YOUR FACE

COMING UP FAST

MAKING IT HAPPEN - On June 10th, what's old is new again. In a time in which most acts sound redundant, people are talking about clipping. The Los Angeles three piece, known for a stand-out, in your face creativity, have signed with Sub Pop records. Their album 'CLPPNG', will be released on that label June 10th. (Probably more abrasive than I want to hear, but like many I suspect.. we'll still be listening. This is gold.)  clipping. is rapper Daveed Diggs and producers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson. Have a listen to this beautiful bit of noise.

Brazil's Psicotropicais covers Arcade Fire

From the Mailbag

So, here's the deal. I can't begin to listen to, digest or publish everything we receive. About once or twice a month in 2014, I'll open new mail - and so long as the stuff is potentially of interest to our music-crazed audiences, we'll publish it. It gives everyone - no matter who you are, what kind of music you make, no matter your budget, a chance to reach our audience.

MEET THE BAND - "I'm sending this e-mail coz my band made a recent version of Arcade Fire's Tunnels from the first album Funeral," writes Psicotropicais singer Angelo Malka (above). Hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, Psicotropicais is Malka, Dani Buarque, Karen Bachega, Thiago Coiote and Vanessa Gusmão. To my knowledge this post represents one of their first exposures in stateside music blogs. We think they're definitely one to watch. A nice cover guys.

Ryan Hobler - She Came Along (World Premiere)

BRAND NEW SONG

I remember when she came along and found me lying on the floor all drunk in town
I had propped myself against a wall and gave up after all the time spent falling down
No I couldn't even stand
'Til she gave me a hand
When she came along, when she came along, when she came along

She helped me get back on my feet, called a cab and stayed with me a little while
And when that driver didn't show she figured she could drive me home 'cause "What's a mile?"
And it came as a surprise
How this opened up my eyes
When she came along, when she came along, when she came along

Oh I changed my ways
Oh my saving grace
No if she had not come 'long
I would never write one song
I'm glad she came along, so glad she came along, I'm glad she came along

I'm glad she came along
I'm glad she came along
I'm glad she came along
I'm glad she came along
Yes I'm glad she came along

ONE TO WATCH - Eclectic folk-pop singer and genre-jumping songwriter RYAN HOBLER has been playing music in and around his native New York for nearly two decades. Performing in various bands and working as a professional audio engineer, Hobler developed a refined, lyric-driven style with a sound that combines intertwining layers of natural acoustic tones, transporting vocal harmonies and surprising arrangements. Thematically, his songs range from intimate personal stories to surreal allegorical explorations that have been praised for revealing a "love, defeat, and resilience in each track” (Examiner.com). Influenced by folk-rock heroes like Paul Simon, Elliot Smith, and Nick Drake, Hobler’s driving force is a desire to connect with others, inspire them, and create great art. He’s currently finishing up a new collection of songs with renowned producer Andy Baldwin (Bjork, Saint Lucia, Wakey! Wakey!) set to be released late 2014.

Hobler is throwing a "She Came Along" release party in NYC at The Slipper Room on 5/29. The event will also feature the first ever live screening of his video for "See What You're Doing to Me".

Live Photos: Band of Skulls in Boston!

Photographic Evidence
By Ryan Spaulding

The House of Blues
Boston - April 29, 2014

BAND OF SKULLS - After watching this band continue to get better and better the last few years, they now have the material to match. The Himalayan world tour, well underway, the band came through Boston and tore the roof off the house of blues. Apparently this band can play to any size room as I have seen them in 250 capacity-max spaces and 2,500-rooms. Thousands have been won over at large scale outdoor festivals (note to fans, Sasquatch is drawing closer). The little three-piece takes it all in stride, casually cool while melting the minds of the audience. If you're in Austin, TX tonight I have to believe there is no better show in town. Band of Skulls is Russell Marsden (guitar, vocals), Emma Richardson (bass, vocals) and Matt Hayward (drums).

Hallelujah The Hills and the incredible: Have You Ever Done Something Evil?

A BEST OF 2014 SELECTION

DESTROY THIS POEM

Hey alright, we're cherry picking days till we die
we're building shapes unknown to the eye
we're breathing life into the meteor skies
and I can't even sing

hey alright, can you believe we escaped alive?
Here honey, get into this disguise
they're gonna try and tell us doors have closed
but I say fuck that noise

i'm doing ok I guess
I'll walk with a limp but I'll try to hide it
i'll show up to your party with bandages on
covering every part of my head but my eyes
you'll see me
don't worry
you'll see me
don't worry

Hey alright, I figured out how to sleep through the night
I told you no more revenge but I might
We’ll reinstate some classic spells from the zone
Now let’s destroy this poem

Cuz there's a lotta people saying
that I got no skin in the game
but they're wrong

Hallelujah The Hills arrive at their pinnacle-to-date somewhat unexpectedly this Tuesday (5/13). With career-level performances and stellar, devil-may-care songwriting from Ryan Walsh, that's when the band release their new studio album, "Have You Ever Done Something Evil?" to the world. I am already possessed by the new record.

As a critic second, and a music lover first - I set out this week to discover exactly why this record strikes so many positive chords... Destroy This Poem is a perfect example of personal songwriting elevated to the stars. Self-effacing moments, glimpses into emotional memories and reflections on personal discovery are stacked up like train cars pointed out into the night. This is a brilliant record in an age in which bands make singles.  .

The band's fourth record, each of the band's efforts has progressively gotten better (the last of which, "Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Trashcan", landed them on our annual best of albums list.) So I did have expectations going in.. I did not, however, expect to spend as much time with this new record as I have. (Several listens this week.)

Have You Ever Done Something Evil? has the same dwell, the same power, the emotional upswing and artistic dance as Delta Spirit's 2007 masterpiece Ode to Sunshine, but has a thunder all its own. Walsh, as I have learned, is a pretty reliable narrator. When the band begins it's entrance and Walsh opens the door for us on Phenomenonology, the listener has little choice but to yell out, "shotgun!" and jump into the passenger seat...

PHENOMENOLOGY

I promise to keep this embarrassing
I think I'm doing a pretty good job
without filters I proceed through the mob
telling everyone my every single thought
no reservation, hesitations in sight
it's a decent way to pass through the night

take this take land
the words I use in demand
break through the gate and show them why they are wrong
look at these strange days, the brand new sins are fixing to stay
take this take land
let's pray it's not too bland

Divine times on the dotted lines
Phenomenonolgy!

I came to on the floor
There’s others there with you too
Put yourself in a trance
Your automatic writing’s the best
Dim the lights, enter ghost
Somebody give it guitars
And do not what you're told
just tell us what you're going to do!

Divine times on the dotted lines
Phenomenonolgy!

This is a winning record with a timeless soul and a foot in three decades. It's rich and vibrant without being overblown. And further, I feel it was made for music lovers. Each time I listen I pick up new elements and come to a fresh appreciation for what's unfolding. There will be a west coast tour in the days ahead and lots of press coming about this album. Believe the Hype. My highest praise for a band who can write a lyric like this (from Pick Up An Old Phone): "Pick up an old phone and hear the future coming back for you / We’ll turn to golden tape recorded versions of the truth / Everything is on it’s way."

"This is the best record I've heard in months. Maybe longer," - Ryan Spaulding

GINGER BAKER RETURNS - First New Album in 16 years!

There's a point in life where you make a conscious decision in what you're going to love and what you're going to discard. While much of the music world did that with Ginger Baker years ago, most writing him off as dead.. (I write this with judgment as Baker's penchant for drug and alcohol abuse and rough living shows a decade's long legacy of flying far too close to the sun.) Ginger probably gave up on the World, but he never completely walked away from his music. That much was clear upon watching Jay Bulger's amazing documentary film, "Beware of Mr. Baker" which shows the lovable rogue delight in causing new misery and improbably climb behind the drums for a Cream reunion tour. Baker remains an enigma but the percussionist has defied all of nature's rules once again. The greatest rock drummer of all time (and probably one of her top ten jazz percussionists) will return this year offering up the first album of original material in 16 years. 'Why?' is the name of the record (Motema Records, June 24). Perhaps simply because he can? Baker, who remains the foil of Death, will be 75 years old.

HIGHLIGHTS - Ginger Baker’s recognition as a drummer began during his time in the Graham Bond Organisation, a band that toured with The Who, The Troggs, The Moody Blues and Chuck Berry in the early 1960s, attracting press interest for their outrageous behavior and riotous fun. By 1964, Melody Maker journalist Chris Welch had deemed Baker “one of Britain’s great drummers.”

Baker met Eric Clapton in 1966. The two were mutually impressed with each other’s playing after jamming together, leading to Baker inviting Clapton to join his band. They soon added bass player Jack Bruce to form Cream. In Baker’s own words, they created “instant magic” and as a touring act broke box office records previously held by The Beatles.

After Cream came Blind Faith, in which Steve Winwood and Rick Grech joined Baker and Clapton. The band made just one album. When Clapton and Winwood left to pursue their own projects, the remaining members went on to form the jazz-rock fusion group Ginger Baker’s Airforce, which added sax, flute, organ and extra percussion.

During a trip to Africa Baker found himself inspired by Nigerian radio. Although there was a war going on, he was adamant about visiting Nigeria, and pushed to set up Batakota Studios in Lagos. Music aside, Africa afforded Baker a wonderful climate and a healthier lifestyle than that of rock n’ roll and touring. He discovered his love for polo and rally driving there, too.

Baker’s work with Airforce and his friendship with Fela Kuti paved the way for Baker’s next musical project: to work with African musicians. With his friend Fela Kuti, at Abbey Road, he recorded the landmark Fela Ransome-Kuti and Africa 70 with Ginger Baker.

Baker then went on to form the British band The Baker Gurvitz Army. Baker provided “extra sounds” on the debut album, such as wheel spins from his Jensen FF on the song “Mad Jack.” He also rode a wheeled swivel chair backwards down a flight of stairs for the LP’s second track.

After setting up a second recording studio, in North London, Baker formed Energy. Since then he has performed at various live events, such as Verona’s Percussion Summit and his own 70th birthday party, with special guest Steve Winwood, at Camden’s Jazz Café.

Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion made a sold-out four-night debut in 2012 at Ronnie Scott's Club in London.
