This is OUGHT

I'm feverish as I write this. And this time it's not because of my passion for the music, it's because I've got one of these New England spring colds that turns into something else... It's found it's way into muscle and bone. And even as I type these words (clickity-clack) I' m listening to the music and just maybe wonder if the excited calamity that befallen me has something to do with the music.. You see, this is no normal band. And that's going to be abundantly clear to you in about three... two... one...

THE BEST NEW SOUNDS OF 2014 - OUGHT

It's taken another half-decade of sugary-sweet pop music to birth the latest round of retribution from post-punk socio/political rock bands in North America. And it these days that have birthed Montreal's Ought, a collective of four players from the Montreal music scene with influences around the globe. Being distributed world-wide by the worthy Constellation Records, the foursome will release their first full-length album, More Than Any Other Day on April 29th.

This record is the result of a week of recording and mixing at Montreal's Hotel2Tango with engineer Radwan Moumneh (Suuns, Matana Roberts, Jerusalem In My Heart) in November. Have a listen for yourself. Undeniably good, this could be the best new music of the genre I've heard in more than a year - from anyone, anywhere.

Ought - More Than Any Other Day
(29 APR Release)

1. Pleasant Heart
 2. Today, More Than Any Other Day
 3. Habit
 4. The Weather Song
 5. Forgiveness
 6. Around Again
 7. Clarity!
 8. Gemini

FROM THE BIO - Guitarist and vocalist Tim Beeler, originally a folk musician hailing from New Hampshire, fell in with New Jersey native Matt May (keyboards) and Australian émigré Tim Keen (drums, violin) Рthe three of them began sharing an apartment that doubled as practice space, where they were soon joined by Portland OR transplant Ben Stidworthy on bass. Ought played its first show and recorded its first EP in the apartment's largest bedroom, in the summer of 2012.

This is ground-floor level for these guys and they deserve some big love for the music they have produced here. Give them some love!

PHOX announce a new album

Best In America Today
Bands You Need to Know

A long, long time ago Bob Dylan stood in a small backwater lumber town named Hibbing and it was at an early juncture there that he came to decide music would be his life. The groundwork laid in those early days surrounded by woods and small-town neighbors paid off. And Dylan's sound, which was new to outsiders, became known; celebrated, despised, revered and well-considered by everybody.  Fast-forward to today. The latest rural American band to jump on to the fore and break through from the indie scene could very well be Baraboo, WI's sensational PHOX.

They're a band we heard about first from Daytrotter and we added them to The Outlaw Roadshow where we realized just how magical they really are. The sound transcends the studio space and the auditory realm. And perhaps that's what makes the group so special. PHOX become resident to your heart and your head. Audiences are generally mesmerized after just a few songs, making an evening with the band go by all-too-quickly. The band have reached wide audiences on tour last year but it was through their multi-media video releases they throttled the throats of new audiences internationally. This week the band announced they have a new self-titled album in the can which will be unleashed on June 24 via Partisan Records. This is very, very good news. And to hold you over, here's the band performing at the iTunes Festival in London. PHOX are Matthew Holmen, Monica Martin, Zach Johnston, Matthew Roberts, Jason Krunnfusz, and David Roberts.

Early Tour Dates:
4/2 - Chicago, IL - Hideout
4/6 - Montreal, QC - La Tulipe^
4/7 - Boston, MA - The Sinclair^

Dum Dum Girls - Are You Okay (Bret Easton Ellis) music video

New Music Video
Dark And Daring

"Are You Okay" is a psychological thriller written by Bret Easton Ellis, it stars Dee Dee Penny and Shiloh Fernandez, as was directed by Brewer (Alt J, Purity Ring, Passion Pit). The video was produced by Braxton Pope, with additional musical score composed by Tamaryn and Drew McDowall. The video, which is a little slow-moving for our taste (a five minute intro) - but undeniably beautiful and dark, also includes Charles Ray's artwork Two Boys (2010), courtesy of the artist and Matthew Marks Gallery. This one might appeal more to friends of film than audiophiles. What are your thoughts?

The Music of Tinariwen

ARTIST
INTRODUCTION
by Julie Stoller

Appearing
at the Paradise
Tues 3/25

Tinariwen were discovered by Western musicians in the late 1990s and since then, their unique "Saharan Blues" has gained a worldwide following. Their last album, Tassili, a recording made in a tent in the Algerian desert, went on to win a Grammy Award for Best World Music.

That isn't your typical album review introduction, but then again, North African Tuareg band Tinariwen isn't your typical band. They were founded in the Tuareg camps in Libya in the 1980s, where these nomadic people had relocated. They were looking for work and sought to rebuild their lives after fleeing their Saharan homeland. Truth is, the Tuarag have been continuously moved from places they tried to call home since the late 1960s. They traveled through Mali, Algeria, Libya, Chad, Mauritania and Niger. In all of these regions, they were considered refugees. They were (and continue to be) a people without a home. It is a complicated story.

This beautiful, soulful band was born out of death and chaos, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Founding member Ibrahim Ag Alhabib witnessed the death of his father when he was four. Later on, when his family was living in a Libyan camp, he built a homemade guitar, met fellow musicians and was introduced to Western music such as Jimi Hendrix and American blues. During that time, performances were with battery-operated amps around a campfire. This eventually grew to recorded music spreading through the region, with their popularity increasing. Unique to their life experience and infusing their sound, the musicians who would become Tinariwen alternated between playing music and fighting for independence.

This new album, Emmaar (released Feb. 11), is a rich tapestry steeped in their traditional roots. It's hard-won, heartfelt music that sounds like religious chants, ancient yet timeless. Sensuous guitar melodies and tribal drum rhythms that ebb and flow underpin their poetic stories. Solo vocals in their native tongue are answered back with group responses. There are none of the usual Western music signposts—chorus, hook, harmonizing background vocals—but rather a meandering musical journey like a camel caravan across the Sahara, full of mystery and intrigue and wildly hypnotic. It's a visceral experience, a musical trance. In their lyrics, they speak of the daily struggle of the Tuareg people and of their desire to be free again to live their lives as their ancestors have for generations. They also sing about the beauty of their homeland and their cultural pride. The songs vary between proud anthems, funeral dirges, political protests and sacred hymns. There is nothing extraneous, just the sound of the rolling African hand drums, the rise and fall of their ageless voices and delicious guitar lines for which they have become legendary. Western guitar gods meet Malian folk heroes, they straddle a line between our worlds, sharing their lives and giving us something that's exotic yet familiar.

Because of continuing instability in Northern Mali, Tinariwen were not able to record in their native desert, so they used one of ours. The band recorded the album in a home studio in Joshua Tree, California, an area "known for spaced-out rock 'n' roll and psychedelic cowboy folk." The recording process was organic and natural, with the entire band playing at the same time in one room. Original members from the 1980s (Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni and Alhassane Ag Touhami) and younger members who joined in the 1990s (multi-instrumentalist Eyadou Ag Leche, guitarist Elaga Ag Hamid and percussionist Said Ag Ayad) were joined by American musicians—Josh Klinghoffer (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), Nashville fiddler Fats Kaplin—and poet Saul Williams. The album was mixed by Vance Powell (The Dead Weather, Jack White). While the songs are still very much their own unique story, they were filtered through the California landscape, Mexican food, Western movies and their Nashville-based engineer, making for a true cultural exchange.

Video: Streight Angular - Will Smith

WILL SMITH Lyrics

I never wanted this
When I was a kid
My mother said to me
That I could be forgiven
For the things I did

Happy meals and fries
I sat in front of my broken television
Watching days go by

Oh No, oh no
(I never wanted this)

When I turned 18
My parents said to me
I had to go to college
Then I would succeed
Oh no, oh no
But I had to drop out
I couldn't take what they were telling me
I had to resist, exist

Why is this happening to me?
When all I wanted was to be free!

What have I become?
I'm just a little person, I'm just a little person
Floating through outer space

I don't wanna die
I'm worth a million dollars, I'm worth a million dollars
Molecules collide

(I never wanted this)

Sitting in my car
I wanna quit my job
Another traffic jam
I think I'll blow my head off

Why is this happening to me?
When all I wanted was to be free!

What have I become?
I'm just a little person, I'm just a little person
Floating through outer space

I don't wanna die
I'm worth a million dollars, I'm worth a million dollars
Molecules collide

(I never wanted this)

I've been living in
I've been living in a Hollywood Nightmare

Ending this Winter with MINIATURE TIGERS

Like most of you residing in the polar ice shelf that is North America, I am tired (woefully tired) of this winter. I've been looking for great new music to share and this music is just about a perfect, sunshiny way to get your Monday started off right. This is Miniature Tigers. These guys are just what the doctor called for. The new record, titled  Cruel Runnings, is a funny little play on words, recalling John Candy's 1993 film Cool Runnings (a comedy about the first Jamaican Bobsled team). That's fair game as these new songs were recorded in Jamaica with producer Chris Zane (The Walkmen, Passion Pit). Suddenly, the sunshine feel of the record starts to make more sense.

From their Bio: The sound is important but nothing is more important than the feeling of the sound. When Charlie Brand (vocals, guitar) was writing the newest Miniature Tigers record, he looked to the sum of his musical influences for inspiration. “I wanted to make something like Weezer’s Blue Album—not exactly the album, but the feeling of listening to that album at age whatever. Something with that feeling that could connect with people.” That’s how the band had started, after all: When he and founding member Rick Schaier (keys) connected over Myspace in the mid-’00s through their love of the same bands. After a few albums, they brought on Algernon Quashie (guitar) and Brandon Lee (bass) to complete the band.
