OUTLAW ROADSHOW VIDEO - Stage Poet K Phillips rocks New York!

Recorded live in New York
THE OUTLAW ROADSHOW
The Bowery Electric 10/18/13

K PHILLIPS & THE CONCHO PEARLS could be the most underrated live band in America today. Whether it's the ramshackle poetry that frontman K envelops the crowd in, or whether it's him that steps out into the crowd (as you will see in this video) Phillips knows how to play to a crowd. In this particular clip, K makes his way into the audience only to find another Austin musician, Nakia, in the mass. The two start singing together and, well, let's just say it's another magic moment in Outlaw Roadshow history!

Setlist:
To Dance With You
Does It Hold Water
Kat's Song
Lincoln City, OR
Cruel as Caligula
Sheriff's Wife
The Boys I Mean (E.E. Cummings)
The Rambler // Crowd ramble with Nakia

Pete Seeger, Rest In Peace

There's probably very little I can say as an individual about PETE SEEGER that will make you feel more strongly about the man, his art and his beautiful life.. But I will try. I met Pete Seeger first in 2009 at Newport Folk and it was a fleeting but memorable moment. He was a naturally unassuming character and I was a bit afraid to approach him for a handshake. But being near him, for a music lover, was a powerful event. Ii was like watching a pound of light pass though an ounce of keyhole.

Pete was a lightning rod or a gate for goodness and glory. And you didn't have to know Pete's music to understand this. It was a quiet glory because he stopped to graciously meet all. He was especially interested in meeting new people.. And it occurred to me he was emissary to both the past and to music itself.

Seeing Pete surrounded by the walls of Newport's Fort Adams - with all those people who believed in life as he did; it was like watching a charismatic preacher in his holy church.. It was just wonderful to see him in that element. And it was great to see him each year, making an appearance to watch this band or that as they took the stage. One couldn't help but see Pete as looking over his flock.. And just like that, I'm crying at 5am.

You can today see and feel Pete's impact in the voices of children and through the very fact that hope is still alive everywhere. Rest in Peace, gentle warrior. Thank you for the music.. Hope we make you proud!

THE BUZZ - In less than six months, Boston indie rock/folk band Tales of Olde has gone from playing private house shows to sharing stages with national acts in front of hundreds of fans and racking up over 50,000 YouTube views of their Justin Timberlake cover “Pusher Love Girl”. Their recipe for success has been a home-cooked mixture of talented, hardworking musicianship, a commitment to give back to the community, and a stylistic versatility that makes audiences experience a full spectrum of emotions.

 Justin Timberlake cover!

It all started when two husband and wife teams – Lucas (lead vocals) and Evelyn Cortazio (background vocals) and Ellen (fiddle) and Drew Story (guitar) – met in the summer of 2011. Two years later they added a rhythm section with Jeff Kinsey (bass) and Al Cleveland (drums) and Tales of Olde was born. The band will be playing shows throughout the winter in anticipation of the release of their debut EP in early 2014. This is definitely a group of creators we will be watching in the year ahead. Stay in touch guys!

Rocket and the Ghost

ONE TO WATCH IN 2014
Someone You Should Know

MEET THE BAND // BACKSTORY - Rocket & The Ghost consists of Kiyoshi Matsuyama (songwriter/vocals/guitar), Brian Kesley (bass), Stuart Bidwell (drums), Sean Gavigan (guitar), and Alan Markley (keyboards). In 2011, Kiyoshi found himself in a difficult position for anyone in a band on the rise. As a founding member of Brooklyn's The London Souls, he had spent the past seven years on an adventure that was nothing short of extraordinary, touring with the likes of The Black Crowes, The Roots, and recording with Ethan Johns at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

As his tastes changed, so did the music he was writing, and Kiyoshi had to move on. Rocket & The Ghost was born out of a brief but powerful songwriting collaboration with Lily Claire of Lily & The Parlour Tricks, who assisted Kiyoshi to flesh out the songs he had written during his last years with The London Souls. Rocket & The Ghost made quite a splash during CMJ 2013 in New York City and released their Self-Titled EP on November 5th.

GEM CLUB - In Roses

January New Release
UNDER THE RADAR

ADVANCE WARNING - Somerville's Christopher Barnes, Kristen Drymala and Ieva Berberian are Gem Club. The band have quickly gone from humble local beginnings, late night offerings here in Boston to a San Francisco studio where they cut the dramatic cinema of new album, "In Roses." Tiny Telephone is the analog studio owned by Jon Vanderslice and that's where the new songs were dropped, but those songs were inspired, written and composed largely here in Boston. Those early days in a music-rich underground scene serving the three-piece well on their way to indie stardom.

The music here is somber, stoic and absolutely gorgeous. This is what feeling is all about.

Because "In Roses" is an album of haunting piano songs, it might seem felicitous to the listener that songwriter Christopher Barnes once lived in a disused Boston piano factory. Nights, from behind neighboring doors, he could hear strangers fighting, throwing loud parties, even shooting scenes for porn films. While life exploded around him, Barnes retreated, “trying to re-create these landscapes with music.”

On January 28th, the band release "In Roses" under the Hardly Art banner. Expect a lot of noise nationally on music blogs. This is your head start.

highly recommended - one to watch

Boston Bands Play for Music's Future

This is a story about music. At its center is the premise of how we can make kids better people through music. And, consequently, how music can make communities better places. It's a story about children and string ensembles - and the man who wants to bring them together. It's also somehow a story of independent rock bands in New England and their desire to be a part of something. And it's the story of two Boston guys who love the idea of putting this all together, having a great night of music and doing some good..

On Thursday January 23rd a special music night will take place at TT the Bears in Cambridge. A Musical Benefit for REVOLUTION OF HOPE will seen three magical local bands on the rise play to help fund music programs for area kids.

At the foundation of Revolution of Hope is David France. France has incredible passion for both music and helping kids achieve their goals. The Revolution of Hope program has come to mean much more than just music to so many involved. That's because it works. Inspired by the philosophy of the Venezuelan musical youth development program, El Sistema (Wikipedia link) tthe goals and outcomes of Revolution of Hope are social as well as musical. That was a big piece of El Sistema as well. The system and France's program  offer a pro-social, non-aggressive and civic-minded environment which (among other things) fosters music creativity. The kids that leave this program are creatively-focused, better adjusted and on a good path. One could argue the program helps prepare the youth for their next step in life - regardless of whether it's in music.

The program is here in Boston's midst now - they're located in Roxbury. Revolutions of Hope have already done a lot of good. The program needs assistance to keep accepting new children and offering opportunities to be in this creative environment.

The Music Benefit on Thurs, Jan 23rd costs just $12 - and the three bands playing (see below) are each worth the price of admission. Please consider making a small tax-deductible donation to Revolution of Hope even if you cannot attend the show. This is passionate work and should be supported.

Austin Lucas - Alone In Memphis

Paul Moore photo

ONE TO WATCH - We've found a great deal of the best music talent from our friends. And whether the tip comes from fellow music enthusiasts, writers, bloggers, photographers or from musicians who would already love, these indications are generally a look into the soul of both our friends and the songwriter himself... Such is the case with this guy; Indiana native AUSTIN LUCAS is a meek every-man turned fiery soul-searcher. There's something quietly assertive but unassuming about his songs.. It's the kind of music that gets better and better and better with each listen.

Here's some of the well-earned praise for Lucas' latest effort, Stay Reckless:

Roem and The Revival - Maybe I Don't Need You

WORLD PREMIERE

Maybe I Don't Need You is Roem Baur's brand new song. It's one of three new songs recorded live at Bob Weir's state-of-the-art live studio in San Rafael, CA. Roem & The Revival were contest winners of a recent contest and raced in to perform in the room just days later. (In addition to the HD video which we are sharing with you, the new material was audio mixed and mastered. Baur was also given a sweet Telefunken M80 microphone!)

"The facility was amazing," Baur write. "From the vintage 60's Ludwig kit, to incredible guitar and bass amps, to vintage mics and pre's galore. The room itself has microphones and speakers in the ceiling and walls, so at the touch of a button could acoustically emulate the sound of any club, stadium, or studio space in a recording."

The Year in Review with Roem Baur
An Artist Looks Back on a Fiery 2013

In January I performed on television for the first time for a CBS station's morning show, Good Day Sacramento. The invite came from a longtime fan who was eager to get my songs heard after hearing that I had "dropped the acoustic guitar for a more plugged-in sound." It also marked the first time, outside of local shows, that I had played the music out publicly that would become "The Revival." In February, I found out I had been invited to play The Outlaw Roadshow. The news was a surge of energy into the writing room where I was making demos for the upcoming record.

Surrounded by all the amazing musicians of the Roadshow, I was inspired by the sounds as I entered pre-production with Grammy nominated producer Damien Lewis, (who would later join my band.) After an April of demos, I finally entered the studio at the beginning of May to make my first studio record with an 8-piece band. Upon completion of the record, the mastering engineer encouraged me to pitch one of the songs to the local Cumulus station, KFOG, who went on to add it to their "Local Scene" CD (which would later give me my first-ever, radio play.)

FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD

In June, Roem & The Revival hit capacity at our first show at the legendary Boom Boom Room in SF. Although a only 240 person-space, it felt like a huge accomplishment for a band with no management, booking agent, or label to speak of, on a weeknight. Later that same month, I was voted on the Grammy board of Governors for the local San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, representing working songwriters. I left for a west coast solo tour in July to promote the first single from the EP, playing shows from San Diego to Seattle, joined on various shows with 3 other Outlaw Roadshow alums, Little Brave, Steven Roth, and Tyler Stenson.

For the first time, my tour was sponsored by boot company Bed|Stu who discovered me during SXSW. I returned from tour in time to reunite with Adam Duritz backstage during the Counting Crows amazing San Francisco show, which was a powerful reminder that you can never stop learning, or improving your craft.

In August KFOG started playing my second single, "Maybe I Don't Need You" and invited us to play the headlining slot on the main stage of our first festival. September marked the release of the EP and our first ever "Listening Event" where we invited a small group of music lovers into the Mastering Suite to hear the EP, which was recorded in "iTunes HD" (10x CD) quality. Later in Sept, I was invited to play the America's Cup party and witness Oracle's historic comeback victory.

In October my daughter was born(!). Later that month the band and I co-headlined an all Bay Area lineup at the ULUV festival in San Francisco. In December I was notified that we won the Race to TRI contest, as determined by Bob Weir's team. The window to claim the recording prize was during my winter tour, but I was already flying back for a night from San Diego to play a private show, so we recorded the video and audio live, the following night. I returned to tour in Austin, which concluded in Chicago. I am currently finishing song demos for the next recording.

Sam Friend gets launched

New Music Video
Fresh Music and
Vintage Footage

CATCHY POP - Sam Friend cuts a diminutive profile but carries a ton of musical character in that frame. The singer-songwriter who splits time between Miami and New York, today offers up a clever music video for his song, Laer. The video, which recounts Friend's inability to communicate and understand women, cleverly uses vintage video footage from a 1960 Bell Laboratories-produced film, called The Big Bounce, about the use of satellites and "Echo Location" to send phone signals around the Earth.

The exciting mission and satellite launch, which was presumably too dangerous for a human, was accomplished with a monkey pilot. And in true self-effacing fashion, Laer treats Sam Friend as both the monkey and the emotional disconnect that's being fixed.. Credits for the video, which uses period-appropriate stop motion, go out to Doug Klinger and to Sam Friend.

Thoughts on U2's New Year's Day

HAPPY NEW YEAR 1983 - Young and impressionable. And easily excited by the new music medium: video. That's where we find ourselves when considering the cultural impact of "New Year's Day" by U2. The year was 1983 and while perhaps my taste in music was a bit ahead due to my curious mind but the library of what I didn't know about the art of impression - was voluminous.

U2 finalized the War album in 1982 and opted for the lead single for the record released the following spring to be "New Year's Day." Mtv would export the song multiple times daily to millions of music-hungry kids. I was one of them, swept up in the powerful imagery: a rag tag army, a winter scene, a relentless drive to get to the girl.. to do what was right. I was too young at the time to know the Boy and October records. But would soon go back and learn the words to those songs too. It all goes back, I suppose, to this moment. This video.

In four minute sessions, each week, millions of children of the first world were reintroduced to old concepts of justice, light, duty and sacrifice. It was really kind of epic and not yet completely commercialized. Along the way we were clearly bought and sold on the power of the music video.

And U2? This was a band that was exceptionally good at raising flags.

3 DEC 2013.. UPDATE - THE VIDEO WAS REMOVED.
USE THIS LINK TO WATCH ON U2's SERVER
(tthe link opens in a new window - keep reading)

BONUS VIDEO:

A Very Interesting Read:

"As he stood in the studio on the day in 1982 that U2 was finalizing "New Year's Day," Bono had a mental picture of Lech Walesa, the Polish Solidarity leader, standing in the snow on New Year's Day, leading a workers strike. It resonated with him.

The band members had gone through some problems, and they weren't sure they wanted to continue together. Their spiritual values seemed at odds with the rock lifestyle, but they finally realized they could use the music to share their beliefs. So it felt like the band too was beginning again.
