Ali Holder - In Preparation for Saturn's Return

On Further Review

Chris Fullerton is a Music and Film writer.
He lives in Austin, Texas.

In Preparation for Saturn’s Return is the debut from Austin’s ALI HOLDER. It's a smoldering collection of songs which combine country, folks, jazz and blues. Like almost any good record, the songs therein deal with love and loss, offering different views and vulnerabilities. There’s a sexual tension in Holder’s vocals as her voice strains to deliver gut-wrenching lines, and I liken her to Lucinda Williams in a lot of instances. There’s a heavy classic country influence in songs like “Mourning Dove” and “Drinking Double” which was listed as one of Daytrotter’s best songs of 2013, but also a distinct darkness in songs like “Blood in the Basement” which recounts the regrets of a violent relationship.

The standout tracks on the album, for me, are the first single, “The Only Thing,” which biographically covers the singer’s shortcomings while she tries to remain faithful (pleading for the benefit of the doubt) as she swears she won’t hurt her new love. This is a song that has enough mainstream appeal that it could (should) have regular play on country stations.

Then there’s my personal favorite song, the duet “I Saw a Wolf” with Austin singer-songwriter Daniel Thomas Phipps. Their voices mesh as they trade verses and harmonize in all the right spots, tying the package with a ribbon of danger and excitement.

Musically, the production is consistent, without being slick and features top notch players like Phipps, fiddler Phoebe Hunt and guitarist Jeremy Menking. The songs are varied enough that they don’t get boring or repetitive, but similar enough in content that the listener won’t notice as the songs slip from one to the next. Holder is definitely one of the up-and-coming voices from the Austin music scene. Pick up the album for all the proof you need.

Holding On For Life - Broken Bells

New Music Video
New Album Ahead!

FUTURE IS NOW - So much of the writing you see in music blogs like ours is vitriol and much of the rest hype. The fact that new sounds and celebrated artists can produce great music and be commercially successful has become a bit of a misnomer. We buy into the phenomena and they we join in of the ceremonial tearing-down of the dream. So refreshing to learn that James Mercer and Dangermouse will have a new record in 2014 that will likely be both widely revered and be creatively robust. The new video for "Holding On For Life" the new song from LP, "After The Disco" showcases both player's creative touch. Anticipate that this will be one of the 'light' tracks on what will likely be a defining album for the pair performing under the moniker of Broken Bells, and for the young 2014.

The record will hit stores on January 14th.

Bird Courage

Best of 2013
New Video

Setlist:
Knives
Constellation
The Way (by Workman Song/Birdcage)

MOMENT CAUGHT ON FILM - I was contacted by Outlaw Roadshow video director Ehud Lazin (SBGNYC) with this sweet sit-down with Brooklyn's BIRD COURAGE. The band is new to me and so I was excited to see someone indicated by a respected music friend. And as you are about to see from just a few minutes in, this threesome (featuring Erik Meier, Samuel R. Saffery, and Sean McMahohe) are outstanding. That let me to do more research and I listened to Bird Courage's masterful new record, "Māia Manu" - which is a 2013 treasure. Then I went back and watched the video again. Truly outstanding stuff.

EAGULLS

NEW VIDEO - FULL ALBUM IN MARCH

For a band like Eagulls, touring is their lifeblood, as shown through the relentless bouts of gigging that have colored their four years together, in between working tedious day jobs in the bars and retail outlets of Leeds together. Booking support slots with the likes of Iceage, Merchandise, Parquet Courts, and Fucked Up they've carved out a reputation for chaotic and confrontational live shows.

The band's self-titled debut album is complete and slated for release in March. Finessing the incensed spirit of their early tracks and gigs, it sets its stall out as a heavier, darker and more exhilarating step on from what's come before. "Nerve Endings," opening track and first taste of the record, encapsulates that in throbbing bass and George hollering "can't find my end" whilst "Fester-Blister" provides an anthemic streak cutting through a wall of frenetic noise. "Tough Luck" takes inspiration from outside the punk pool associated with Eagulls, boasting a rumbling Joy Division-esque bassline. It all ends on the searing rush of "Soulless Youth," which finds frontman George Mitchell declaring "I never feel fine/They're soulless inside... the soulless youth," with enough bile to make it clear just how he feels about his generation.

"We're all more pessimistic, more jaded, more cynical," explains guitarist Mark 'Goldy' Goldsworthy of the band's moodier shift. "When you finish uni, you've got optimism and you think everything's going to be alright. You think you'll just take a shit job in a shop and you'll only have to do it for a while but then you're still there a year later..."

SORNE covers BJORK "One of My Biggest Inspirations"

Mesmerizing.
New Covers!

Brand New - Morgan Sorne is nothing if not a dramatic storyteller, an theatrical empath and a driven artist. This week SORNE offers up an absolutely stunning revision of songs by Bjork using - only his "voice and a handful of my sampled sounds including chopsticks, a desk and a canvas as percussive instruments." Bjork's songs are other-worldly, challenging and original. Sorne's treatment of the songs is tender but menacing in focus, this laser-like attention to details is softened by the singer's clear comfort in performing.

"When I was about eight or nine years old, I first saw Bjork with The Sugarcubes on Saturday Night Live. Over the years, she has been one of my biggest inspirations, and so, I have created these versions of her songs," writes Sorne. This is wonderful stuff.

Everyday is Christmas - K Phillips and the Concho Pearls

A New Holiday Classic
an original song for X-Mas!

I have come to look on Austin's K Phillips as a bit of a modern poet and his hard-luck backing band, The Concho Pearls, as lost saints.. These Outlaw Roadshow All-Stars have a new holiday song for you all to enjoy and we are delighted to debut it! "Everyday is Christmas" is typical of the band's ramshackle sound. And lyrically? It's cynical yet celebratory (it focuses on lost love during the Holiday season)..  and that's pure K Phillips.

Filligar and indie harpist Mikaela Davis cover Spiritualized

VIDEO COVERS
NEW TODAY!

BEAUTIFUL COVER TELLS A NEW STORY - While on tour together this summer, Chicago's Filligar and indie harpist Mikaela Davis (Rochester, NY) arranged and recorded this take on Spiritualized's "Too Late." it was recorded between sound checks and sets in the bands' vans and hotel rooms, showcasing not just the abilities of the musicians but where they were were mentally, socially and creatively when the video was captured. The cover tells the story of not just the song but how these two young bands came together artistically and as friends.

Fierce Bad Rabbit

WORLD PREMIERE
Music You Need to Hear

FIERCE BAD RABBIT photo by Josh Neil

The road for Fierce Bad Rabbit began four years ago. Having just returned from West Africa for a trip with his wife in the Peace Corps, Chris Anderson (vocals and guitar) had stockpiled songs for a band. The singer, who then resided in Colorado but now lives and works in Boston, met with a series of songs he wanted to record and met Alana Rolfe (viola, vocals) and Dayton Hicks (bass guitar) to work on the songs. Max Barcelow (drums/percussion/vocals) was added with Nathaniel Marshall playing live keys.

A RICH, GOLDEN SOUND - There are moments in my listening to Fierce Bad Rabbit that similarities can be drawn to Arcade Fire, The Shins, Annuals and Wilco but it is not these similarities that win them praise, it's the execution on the record. Tight and alert, the band move through the songs on their 2013 album, The Maestro And The Elephant, like technicians. But instead of coming off as too intense or even overwhelming, these songs play a bit more like a happy train on some child's toy track.. Light, contended and joyful - the songs parade through the ears. Pure escapist fun awaits! The muse here is the moment. Each song lifts up a memory and aloft it can be shared and enjoyed.

NEW ALBUM COMING in 2014
TODAY'S SONG PREMIERE!

The preceding is the world premiere of "Do You Want Me Now?" the next single from the upcoming record (untitled / 2014 release) - what is sure to be their best work-to-date.

Little War Twins

New Music Video
ONE TO WATCH

Some of the best artists that we end up sharing with you come to us from friends, personal recommendations and even by happy accident. My first encounter with Little War Twins came after friends reached out and when I finally did see them, they did not disappoint. In a small room, they appeared to set the night on fire. When the music stopped, the magic they had created was clear.. A most memorable set!

CHARACTER & EMOTION - Fronted by a fiery pixie warrior named Gaetana Brown, Little War Twins could be one of the emerging names in the year ahead. Enigmatic, Beautiful and Challenging, Little War Twins have a new music video to share for "Mother Pulls" which we are delighted to share with you..

The Poetess turned stage phenomena found her start through music in humble beginnings, "I always wanted to be a poet, and then I found an old guitar in the attic that had only 2 strings on it, and started to teach myself to play so I could bring my poetry to life," she writes. Brown is backed up by drummer Patrick "Trick" McConnell, a dynamic drummer who has clearly developed the vital bond to his singing partner. A two-piece acting as one animal.

ORIGINS OF THE BAND'S NAME - Little War Twins, was taken from an amazing book: Grandmothers of the Light, by: Paula Gunn Allen. In her book she writes the stories that have been passed down for many generations, stories that are the history of many tribes and nations. It is with these two revelations: that the music is the result of poetry that flows from Gaetana's heart and the aesthetic here is tribal and a reflection of the will to create.
