MUSIC NEWS

FRIDAY NIGHT ON YOUR TV SET

HIGHS AND LOWS

Language Room

From the Mailbag

So, here's the deal. I can't begin to listen to, digest or publish everything we receive. About once or twice a month in 2013, I'll open new mail - and so long as the stuff is potentially of interest to our music-crazed audiences, we'll publish it. It gives everyone - no matter who you are, what kind of music you make, no matter your budget, a chance to reach our audience.

Meet the Band - LANGUAGE ROOM were born during the SxSW Music Festival! Old friends Scott Graham and Todd Sapio (who were both living in LA) literally ran into each other on the streets of Austin amongst a sea of musicians occupying the city during SXSW 2007 - after not seeing or speaking to each other for years. The pair began collaborating and soon decided to turn their ideas into an actual band, bringing in Scott’s brother Matt Graham on bass. Sean Hill was added on drums.
This band have a way with people. Their projects (including the purchase of an RV for touring and their latest EP) were fan-sourced efforts. Since its release in early 2012, the band’s E.P.,“Skin & Heart & Lungs” - produced by Dwight Baker (Bob Schneider, Kelly Clarkson, Dixie Chicks) has gotten rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

Language Room are an official SxSW band and will entertain audiences there this March.

NEW LIVE VIDEO - "I Won't Let You Down" is an acoustic video shot during a snowy sunrise in Omaha while on a recent tour of the midwest. Until now, the song was unrecorded and unreleased, so it is a sneak peek of the direction they will be going in on the next album, which is in pre-production.

Tame Impala - Mind Mischief

Spicy New Music Video
Bands You Need to Know

The last year of music-making has been one of serious accomplishment for Perth's TAME IMPALA. After touring extensively (a space they have come to make their mark regardless of the zip code) the band released one of 2012's best records in Lonersim. It made many, many music critics' Best Albums List - including our own.

Today we have the new music video for Mind Mischief. It's directed by David Wilson (Passion Pit, Metronomy), and featuring both live action and Tame Impala’s signature trippy psychedelic animated visuals, the video shows a schoolboy’s fantasy sex romp with one particularly come-hither teacher. The video was co-produced by Urban Outfitters as the twelfth installment of their UO Music Video Series.

In conjunction with the music video premiere today, they've released a behind the scenes video with director David Wilson, as well as a blog feature with an interview with Tame Impala and photos from the set.

Houndmouth

Best New Sounds of 2013
Someone You Should Know

ONE TO WATCH

Houndmouth "Krampus"

Matt Myers (guitar/vocals), Katie Toupin (keyboard/vocals), Zak Appleby (bass/vocals) and Shane Cody (drums/vocals) are a little band touring the country as HOUNDMOUTH. They possess a rich soulful sound; far older than the members possess age... and apparently their artistic souls are as a classic and timeless as the rivers that cut through the Indiana countryside, headed south.

Houndmouth's debut, self-titled EP has quickly won over fans. They played a date recently with Lucero and then there were a string of successful shows with Drive By Truckers. (One of which resulted in a friend dialing me up and asking me to take a listen. Glad I did.) Up next, the band will focus on finishing a full-length record and then there's SxSW 2013 in Austin where they have been named an official band. Expect great things.

Devendra Banhart - Mala

Sweet New Sounds
First Song on the LP

Never Seen Such Good Things

MALA - the new album from the brilliant songwriter will be released March 12 on Nonesuch Records. Expect nothing less than pure brilliance and casual grace. It is, after all, Devendra Banhart. His music is soulful, experimental and highly-engaging. In my humble opinion - we have only seen this guy scrape the surface.

After you check out the new song, I encourage you to go back and get acquainted with Devendra's quirky, innocent and beautiful, "What Will We Be" (RSL's Best Albums of 2009 List).

Umphrey's McGee at Fete in Providence

Thoughts on Shows
by Todd Harrington

The Scene:
Fete 1/19/13
Providence, RI

Billed as “An Evening With Umphrey's McGee” the few hundred fans standing in the cold to get inside the club were all abuzz.  The Indiana band, who are currently in their fifteenth year, seem to be getting larger as the venues seem to be the same size.  This will change.

Largely known in the jam band scene, it's a pigeonhole label that no longer fits the band well.  Sure they jam, and no two set lists are the same but they seem to mix prog rock with elements of heavy metal. Excluding one member the band has been the same since inception.  The six member group filled the Fete stage with their gear, leaving little room for them to move about.  All of them are such skilled players they don't need to make up for it with wild stage antics.

Due to the lengthy queue of patrons outside the venue, the band took the stage about 30 minutes later than planned but wasted little time getting the room red hot.  By the second tune “Syncopated Strangers” the band was already in “tease” mode, dropping guitar lines from George Benson's “Breezin”.  Singer/Guitarist Brendan Bayliss thanked the Rhode Island crowd for coming, as it had been “some time since we've been here” but then took a comedic turn saying the next song was dedicated to Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o. (the band went to/met at Notre Dame) and they went to their first cover of the evening “Girlfriend  is Better” (Talking Heads).

The first set was one long crazy jam to these ears and the room just moved.  Kris Myers (drums) and Andy Farag (percussion) were so busy you'd swear they had four arms each, if not more.  Bassist Ryan Stasik has solid bass fills all evening and never was too high in the mix, and was never overly flashy.

After a set break the band returned to the stage with a one two punch of Pink Floyd.  In the Flesh->Another Brick in the Wall pulled the room right back in.  Keyboardist Joel Cummins took the lead on Brick and the band did a very solid and spot on cover of the tunes.

The second set was solid and the band teased a little Hall and Oates but the final few songs were really the “moments” of the night.  No UM review can be complete without mentioning guitarist Jake Cinninger.  Cinninger uses the guitar as an extension of his fingers.  From his monster riffs, to the frenzied finger tapping on the fret board.  Not sure if this reviewer hasn't been paying attention, but why is he not mentioned on “top guitar player” lists.  One could argue that “speed won't win the race” but it is his technique as well.  Cinninger should be in talks as one of the better guitar players out there.

Early morning the doors to the hot club opened to the very cool Providence night and the streams of smiling faces showed it was another solid evening of music.

Filligar at Stubbs

Photographic Evidence
by Alejandro Silveyra

The Scene: 1/19/13
Stubb's in Austin, TX

It's hard to argue with the facts. FILLIGAR have gone from Chicago band done-good to that of noted mover and shaker on the international music scene. Less than a year after successfully touring Europe, these guys opened up for Counting Crows on their national tour. They were then hand-selected to do the same for Brandi Carlile and now they are doing the same on the road with Taddy Porter.

It's all been a whirlwind couple of years for sure, but things for Filligar are actually going to get even better for these guys": Filligar has a new full-length in the can and will release it this year. After hearing a couple of the new songs live - all I can say is this looks to be one of 2013's best new records.

How does a band spend the rest of their "extra" time? Filligar are relearning every song from their catalog, dusting off the material in the live setting and using it to connect with new fans on the road. One of the most gifted and hardworking bands in the US - we've already called them one of the best live acts in America.

Gracie Curran & The High Falutin' Band - Even with the Rain

A SONG IS LEAKED
new album on the way!

It's always great to share new music from acts we've never published about before, especially when they're from our home turf and it sounds this good. Gracie Curran and her bandmates already had a well-established reputation for producing jaw-dropping blues rock and soul, but with the forthcoming record release (2013) the stakes are even higher for the band. And as evidenced by this hot new song from the upcoming "Proof of Love," there's a lot to look forward to in the days ahead!

Gracie Curran & The High Falutin' Band are: Tom Carroll (guitar), Geoff Murfitt (bass guitar), Derek John Bergman (drums) and Gracie Curran. They are currently on the road.

RIBS to tour with The Joy Formidable!

MAKING MUSIC NEWS

Big Time Congratulations to our friends in RIBS - who have earned an invite to join world-burning rockers The Joy Formidable on tour. 5 dates on the "Wolf's Law" North American Tour have been confirmed. To someone that loves the sound of both acts, I think this is a brilliant pairing! On multiple occasions RSL has recognized both bands for their stylistic approach and their artistic expression.

ABOUT RIBS - The band was shortlisted on our recent The 2012 Album Buyer's Guide. We've hosted RIBS in live lineups here in Boston and most recently, we invited them to play The Outlaw Roadshow in New York City during CMJ week last fall. They did not disappoint!

These guys make music that's unique and dominant. It's dark and it's beautiful. That persistence of vision now make perfect sense to everyone. The invitation to have RIBS join the tour on a five-city run (Toronto, Montreal, Albany, Milwaukee, and Lansing) - dates that will likely sell out, demonstrates that hard work and creativity are rewarded. This type of opportunity can be a real game-changer for a band. Can't wait to see what happens next!

SORNE - Ego Altar

ONE TO WATCH / WORLD PREMIERE

Chris Corona photo

SORNE - In the last few years, Morgan Sorne has written over 80 songs. The first 13 were released in 2011 in his debut album, House of Stone, and he’s working on releasing more this year on his sophomore record, "ego altar." The album will feature songs from the perspectives of the five siblings, the star characters of the House of Stone saga.

TRACK PREMIERE - Set in no particular time or place, the story speaks of family relationships, focusing on the death of the father and highlighting Sorne’s obsession with the Divine Mother. House of Stone grew in his mind for years, the characters initially born as direct reflections of his mother and her siblings. House of Stone evolved from childhood views of family into characters with a life of their own, each representing, in Sorne’s words, “archetypes of the human condition.”

Today, SORNE the band includes Morgan, Kevin Naquin and Deano, along with a production team that brings Sorne’s music and visual artistry to life.

NEW TODAY

In 2012, SORNE performed with international acts TV on the Radio, Beats Antique, James Blake, Dr, Dog, Dawes, Blitzen Trapper, Little Dragon, Rubblebucket and more. This is a sound poised to break out in 2013.

"It's as if Freddie Mercury, David Byrne, an early David Bowie, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Cure's Robert Smith had gotten together and had a baby. He (Morgan Sorne) is an enigma, chanting like an ancient tribesman, stomping like he's dancing for rain, and whirling like a helicopter, while his voice scales the ranges of the mesmerizing and hypnotic, to almost unnaturally Edith Piaf high notes." - Stephen Macmillan Moser of Austin Chronicle

Jason Freeman - Rump

ONE TO WATCH / WORLD PREMIERE

Memphis, TN - PRESENT DAY Meet Jason “Hex” Freeman - a Memphis-born and raised, a  musician steeped in the city's distinct cultural and artistic persuasions.

ABOUT THE ARTIST - Freeman has spent the last decade honing his skills playing solo and with the jug band-inspired Bluff City Backsliders along side current Sun Studio engineer Matt Ross-Spang. Freeman also wrote the score for MTV’s Savage Country and contributed tracks to the Brewer-directed and Academy Award-winning Hustle & Flow. With the release of Freeman's breakout debut, "Hex & Hell" (BR2 Music), Freeman has clearly demonstrated he is a force to be reckoned with. But you can see that much for yourself in today's music video.

HEX & HELL - The album, which comes with it's own mystery comic book, is a true marriage of groove heavy blues and rock, a note-perfect juke joint soundtrack created with the help of some of Memphis’ finest players at one of Memphis’ best kept secrets, Music & Arts Studio, including Amy Lavere and Khari Wynn (Public Enemy) on bass, Adam Woodard (Harlan T. Bobo, Jack O., Star & Micey) on organ, Krista Wroten (The Memphis Dawls) on violin, Jana Misner (The Memphis Dawls) on cello, Suzy Hendrix on sax, and Daniel Farris (The Coach and Four) on drums.

ABOUT THE VIDEO - Filmmaker Mike McCarthy's art is based on the three original Pop Culture contributions that America gave the world during the twentieth century: Comic Books, Rock and Roll, and Drive-In Cinema (not just the physical things themselves, but the ideas behind them). McCarthy has not only been a auteur underground filmmaker for the last 20 years, directing a mass of the cult favorites from Elvis Meets the Beatles, to Cigarette Girl, he has been an outspoken advocate of saving Memphis landmarks such as the Hotel Chisca and the Zippin Pippin roller coaster. It's McCarthy's expertise in the color, the sound and the feel of this era of music that made him the perfect fit to direct the burlesque boogie on Jason Freeman's Hex & Hell, "(Do the) Rump."

With a rare cameo from the one and only Ross Johnson, a Memphis music staple known for not only his own outlandish performance antics but for playing with the likes of Tav Falco and Alex Chilton in the 80s, there was a University's worth of musical knowledge and history on the set the day the video was shot.

New Video from Ty Segall

CULTURAL PHENOMENA
A New Music Video

NEW FROM TY SEGALL

POST MODERN WANDERINGS - We missed NxNE in 2012 with the level of my involvement in Austin for SxSW this year, the 2013 Toronto adventure is looking doubtful. But two years ago, when I was there, TY SEGALL were one of the most buzzed about acts and everybody knew there was looking to attend only a handful of nights. This made attending those early shows very difficult. (We made a faithful decision one evening to see San Diego's Crocodiles as it looked like we would be missing Ty Segall. As it played out, it was a winning night: It was was by many, many personal accounts on social media, The Best set at NxNE 2011 - so yeah, go us! (Even saw a super sweet Deerhoof show. But it really would have been nice to see Ty Segall magic on that trip. Still feel like I was missing out on some early magic.)

THANK GOD FOR SINNERS - Ty Segall has toured the world and have won over throngs of fans. Hailing from San Francisco, the band (named for the man) speak mostly to kids who like distortion and worship at the alters of early Pink Floyd and the dark fuzzy, post-modern pop noir of Brian Jonestown Massacre. The words and sounds can be interchangeable in bits of this alternate songcraft. It's hard to explain but it's music as much about the listener as it is the musician.

Sometimes a song from Ty Segall speaks to me like an old familiar friend and others, it doesn't reach me at all - more something foreign and jarring in the moment. And I think that's natural. My curious affection for the band springs from my sincere desire to understand how any band can produce music capable of that. It's not feel-good music - it's feeling music.

And for the prolific Mr. Segall, the dude has released at least three full length records over the last year and with the naming of new side project "Fuzz" it appears even more is on the way. His distinctive vision continues to pervade music subculture in a way that's hard for those worshiping "music television" and listening to "alternative radio" to fully understand.

The Rebel Light

From the Mailbag

So, here's the deal. I can't begin to listen to, digest or publish everything we receive. About once or twice a month in 2013, I'll open new mail - and so long as the stuff is potentially of interest to our music-crazed audiences, we'll publish it. It gives everyone - no matter who you are, what kind of music you make, no matter your budget, a chance to reach our audience.

Introductions - THE REBEL LIGHT are two brothers from Montauk, New York and their cousin from Yucaipa, California, The Rebel Light are an electronic-infused indie rock group based in Los Angeles. Embracing the spirit of DIY indie music, The Rebel Light record and mix all their own music. Vocals for each song were recorded in a bathroom and the drums were tracked in a wood shed.

Glowing Songs with a rousing spirit - Sometimes I reach into the mailbag somewhat randomly, somewhat haphazardly selecting the music we post. (That gives everybody the best chance to appear on the website.) Today's piece wasn't so much the case. I wanted to hear something bright and uplifting for this piece.. I found it. After listening to these songs, I can't help but think The Rebel Light are headed places. Each of these three songs (the fourth is an alternate version of the same) channels an emotion, the instrumentation is full and flush - the production helps provide a glowing quality to the songs. The fact the band manages to accomplish all of this on a debut indicates there's a possibility of much more ahead. Certainly worth our time. Definitely One to Watch.

Sam Anderson "Pond" (featuring Tara Kelly Kearns)

New Music Finds!
Ahead of the Curve

NEW MUSIC - I have no idea whether or not what I'm about to share was ever meant for a large audience. But my friend Sam Anderson, of Hey Marseilles, has a public soundcloud with this song on it and anyone can click in and listen and share.

"POND" is effing amazing, so I'm sharing!

ABOUT THE ARTIST - Large portions of the American Northwest now know Hey Marseilles - a band we have been following, booking and hanging around with for years now. Last year they toured with Sea Wolf. They've played a couple of Outlaw Roadshows and they have a new album out in March that will certainly be worth your time. But this piece isn't so much about H.M., it's about their ridiculously talented cello player, Sam Anderson, who was just an amiable but gifted kid musician when I first met him.

Sam is real bright and now, he's an other-worldly string player with years of professional touring under his belt. He appears on many, many contemporary Seattle records subbing in where he's needed. He plays classically. He tutors. And evidently he's been making new material of his own (when he has the time, right?) Definitely One to Watch.

The Susan Constant

New Music this Week!
Someone You Should Know

The Susan Constant release their new EP, SHAPES, today.
Release party this Sat 1/19 at the legendary Middle East.

POPULAR MUSIC - Boston's THE SUSAN CONSTANT are a band evolving before our eyes. Striving to advance, pushing their sound and willing to make a mark on the New England music landscape one scalding show at a time.. (And here's something to discuss:  how an indie pop band can sometimes throw cymbal-smashing, epic nights of rock-ness.?!! There's always a "risk" of that with The Susan Constant.) With the new record, SHAPES, out today - the band continue to ride the line between post-punk pop and modern pop music. It's an area and a thing they do better than anybody right now in this city.

The new EP Shapes is a true DIY effort, self-produced over the course of 2012 resulting in six songs that show a step forward for the band, released on the band's own microlabel Tour de Stade Records. Paul Sennott, singer and songwriter, is a standout.

What does this mean for the future? In the immediate, go pick up their album (name your own price) and if you're reading this local, you can catch the band's set this Saturday night at the Middle East in Cambridge. It's a great way to hear SHAPES performed live and see what I mean about the live transformation that takes place. In the long term, this is a band to keep your eyes on. You know we will!

DETAILS - Saturday 1/19 lineup at The Middle East:

Evolfo Doofeht - Don't Give Up Your Mind

SMOOTH, JAZZY FUNK
Someone You Should Know

WORLD PREMIERE - NEW SONG FROM THE BAND!

Evolfo Doofeht (the food of love) have had a huge year; one full of amazing live shows, an absolutely outstanding music video, and culminating with a Boston Music Award win. Not ones to rest on their laurels, the band are releasing a brand new song with us here tonight. It's proof positive of the band's versatility. Known best for their jammy shows and funk-dominated grooves, Evolfo Doofeht's new song, "Don't Give Up Your Mind," is a track that'll helps raise the roof and brings it back down. It's beautiful, soulful, jazzy and light.

This is winning stuff.

Field Report - Fergus Falls (live)

VIDEO FROM THE ROAD
Someone You Should Know

FIELD REPORT - Having just completed their second, or was it their third?, national tour of 2012 - Field Report had a hell of a year. They made a number of Best Albums list (including our own) and made huge, nearly religious, impressions on audiences everywhere they went.

Their ascending and beautiful music is simply perfect for filling large spaces, as evidenced by this new live video shot as part of this new Fuel/Friends Music Blog Chapel Session in Colorado Springs, CO on 10/9/12 (that's the same day they recorded their Hey Marseilles session as well.) Would have loved to been a fly on the wall.

Get to know great music.

Sat, March 9th and Sat, March 16th in Downtown Austin at Rusty's - the best live music venue in the city.

THE OUTLAW ROADSHOW is a thrill ride for the music fan: 3 stages featuring bright emerging bands who deserve some time in your headphones in 2013. It's so great we're doing it 2X this year allowing Ryan and Adam to handpick 30+ bands to present to our music-loving audience.

As with prior years, these sessions will be FREE TO ATTEND. (Limited to legal capacity. Festival badges will not be required to enter.) We ask only that attendees show their support for the amazing bands that play our show - if you love the bands, buy their music and seek out their shows.

Our selection process is limited to our spots, but this is a great way to be heard and be considered for both this show and for future opportunities! (Include a few words introducing yourself, a bio and a link to music and videos. If you wish to submit to both weeks, please submit each request separately.)

MEET ZAZOO - The Outlaw 2013 is presented by ZAZOO. Zazoo has introduced a revolutionary new web application that embeds an artist's unique ‘Mini App’ onto each music video, wherever it is watched. Zazoo provides fans with a live, engaging viewing experience – sing along, play along, access lyrics, peak backstage, get special offers and interact with artists who can now reach the broadest audience possible and gain an edge in a fiercely competitive market.

Very privileged and pleased to relay our custom artwork for both showcases will come from the creative mind and skilled hand of Frank Germano of Man on Fire. He's got the goods.

The Outlaw Roadshow provides opportunities where they are few and provides a level of quality that we've come to be known for. Last year's showcase was attended by thousands and this year we expect the same. Our foremost concern is that everyone is enriched by this process. That means the bands, the fans, the venue, the sound people - in the hope that we'll be able to do this for years to come. The Outlaw Roadshow is all about music and you.

Meet Matt Sucich

ONE TO WATCH IN 2013
Someone You Should Know

Matt Sucich (pron: Sue-Sitch) is from Astoria, Queens. This is a name you would do well to remember. Last June, Matt made his debut at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN, receiving high praise and pleasant comparisons from Andy Langer (Esquire Magazine) on his “Best Other Bands Of Bonnaroo” list - “Because this Queens singer-songwriter is trying to break your heart. What appear at first glance to be simple love songs quickly reveal a Wilco- and Iron & Wine-like depth (and desperation).”

There were appearances in NY for CMJ and in Austin for SxSW. 2012 was a banner year but it got much better in November, as Sucich released his 2nd full-length album, Layers, to a capacity crowd at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall.

Layers is both delicate and daring. Perhaps a more apt description might include that this record is capable of spanning the full breadth of human emotion. Some of the strongest tracks are the most heartbreaking. When Sucich sings, the music becomes a part of your life. The new record, Layers is excellent evidence of all this.

You need to grab this record and make it your own. That way you can hear it as many times as your heart tells you is right.

That being said - we mostly look forward to whatever it is that comes next.
