Stereo Telescope - Fires

New Music Video
On the Move in 2013

WHERE INDIE ROCK AND SYNTHESIZER MEET - It's been a couple of seasons since Stereo Telescope were considered new to the Boston scene but you wouldn't know it based on fan reaction. Their inventiveness, charismatic energy and magical late night sets continue to make them the darlings of those seeking fresh, new vibrant sounds. The duo of Nikki Dessingue and Kurt Schneider continue to move audiences as evidenced here by the new music video for "Fires."

8-BIT ACTION HEROES - Catch these guys on tour this spring on tour with AVOXBLUE & André Obin. Final dates to be announced but it sounds safe to say you can expect them in Austin this March for SxSW once again.

FREELOADERS - The First Trailer!

HAVE A FIRST LOOK
New Indie Film Trailer

FRESH CLIP - While it was wrapped, teased and shown once last year in Los Angeles, the first trailer for irreverent comedy Freeloaders was finally released inside the last 24 hours. The film, which was co-written by Dan Rosen and Dave Gibbs, of Gigolo Aunts and Low Stars, features Adam Duritz as a music performer whose house has been taken over by friends who will do ANYTHING to keep the place for themselves when they learn the home will be sold.

KIDDING ME? - As utterly implausible as the script may be, it's based in fact as we learned last year in this incredible interview with our friend Adam (congrats man) who just this week wrapped up another Counting Crows national tour with Tender Mercies and Boston's Mean Creek. Duritz, who makes cameo appearances throughout the film is also a producer on the movie.

I encourage you to check out the interview after watching the trailer, which features talented players from Broken Lizard and a soundtrack featuring NOTAR. Really, really cool. Congrats to everyone in involved for getting this green-lighted, filmed and sold!

Kodacrome

NEW MUSIC VIDEO
Bands You Need to Know

* this album was born on Martha's Vineyard!

ONE TO WATCH

BiCoastal (from the San Fran / Brooklyn scenes) band Kodacrome have a fresh EP Perla and a brand new music video - Modern Man, below. Their sound caught my ear - as I attempted to determine their "sonic lineage" and within minutes I stopped trying to label them and just got down to liking what they do. Think you'll dig...

Singer Elissa Pociask is a classically trained pianist, with years of solo performance under her belt. Before the advent of Kodacrome, she wrote, recorded and performed in Chicago with Brenmar, and then in San Francisco as “Elissa P,” a one-woman loop-station outfit known for glitchy beats and unorthodox melodies. Drummer and producer Ryan Casey has been working as solo artist, “KaeoFLUX,” and with bands in Brooklyn and Boston for over 10 years as a performer and producer. He has collaborated with artists like M Sayyid of Antipop Consortium, the Zeke Martin Jazz Quartet, and Pilot Balloon, finding ways to stretch his signature production style into many different genres. He also released his first solo LP Form with Belgian label, Marathon Of Dope. Phil DaRosa is a longtime student of guitar who has released several collections of solo recordings. His dedication to technique and style has landed him roles in many a band in the Northeast. He recently opened a recording studio on Martha’s Vineyard, the island where he and Ryan grew up, and it was here that Perla was realized.

Born in a studio on Martha's Vineyard, MA!

Violent Nudity / Ha Ha Ha

New Indie Music Video
A + B Side Songs at once!

SOUND DISCOVERY - "Stinger" is the new album from Says She's Ms. Blat, their first since the fiery drum and key duo (Lottie Leymarie and Bret Puchir) debuted in 2009. The new one - a self described "sonic art project" includes nine churning, bombastic songs that were mixed at Lottie's home in Brooklyn. Today's video profile includes an A and B Side wrapped up in one. And I don't think I've ever seen this done before.

The two are known for their incredibly high-energy live shows and the ability to captivate an audience with their multi layered sound and stage antics. "One might think there is a full band playing," Lottie says, "but there are only two of us, that's how we like it."

Black Books

SOUND DISCOVERY
Bands You Need to Know

ARTIST PROFILE // BLACK BOOKS - They call their music, Southern Dream-Pop. These rousing songs soar, we'll definitely give them that but there's something else here - an edge, a little fuzz - maybe even a bit of darkness perhaps at the core of these songs, and it's the marriage of these two, that Black Books do best.

SOUND ON THE RISE - With two solid years of crafting sonic etherea under their belt. Black Books are standouts in Austin - a city that's become renowned for producing some of the country's best bands... More so now than ever. Just have a listen to "An Introduction To..." the stellar EP released by Black Books last year and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Flight Facilities

NEW MUSIC VIDEO
Something Special

ONE TO WATCH - Aided by the beautiful vocals on this one with Christine Hoberg, check out the unbelievable audio on Flight Facilities' Clair De Lune. The band just unleashed the video about a week ago. The song is light and airy but the video is something cinematic and dramatic. It's hard to imagine these guys not catching on in a huge way if they keep putting out product like this. The band just wrapped their EU and US tours and are going on a brief break. We'll certainly be waiting..

Hey Marseilles - Hold Your Head

VIDEO FROM THE ROAD
Someone You Should Know

HEY MARSEILLES - Having just wrapped a hugely successful national tour with Sea Wolf that took them into venues of all shapes and sizes (one of these being our Outlaw showcase in NY during CMJ this fall), Hey Marseilles made a lot of friends along the way. One of the things they do best is play full-on sprawling acoustic sets.

The band lends itself to filling spaces with their gorgeous music, as evidenced by this new live video shot as part of the Fuel/Friends Music Blog Chapel Session in Colorado Springs, CO 10/9/12. Two things should come out of this: Hey Marseilles are really one of the best bands going. And yes, any music blog (such as this one hosted by our longtime friend Heather) who does both live productions we can appreciate - but chapel sessions, well - that's just plain boss!

Get to know great music.

Memories from Life is good 2012
Prowse Farm - Canton, MA

A standout nationally for her superb playing, Boston's Sarah Jarosz has become a shining star on the national bluegrass map earning her opening slots on tour this year with John Prine. Sarah just shared with fans that she's received a prestigious invitation to play the Celtic Connections, Glasgow's annual folk, roots and world music festival in January. A magnificent storyteller with a beautiful voice, Sarah's beautiful set was a huge win at this year' Life is good. Clearly, she's One to Watch.

REAL MUSIC, REAL GOOD TIMES - The Infamous Stringdusters celebrate the song collections from this country's past but where they really excel is with their original bluegrass arrangements. Some call this new contemporary brand of bluegrass, "High Country," regardless of what name you give it - the execution up on stage is brilliant. Catch them on the Silver Sky Tour right now!

The Bubbler

THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING
A Music Blogger Heads to TV

Some of you know because you follow our twitter feed and many of you are personal friends but for many of you reading this out there - this is the very first notice. Since August 2011 I have been working on nights and weekends on filming a music television program with WSBK TV38 in Boston. (Much of this time was spent post-editing, as we tried to find ways to bring the show on-air.)

The name of the show is "The Bubbler" and our first eight episodes of the show are devoted to sharing the artists, the venues, the creators and the culture of the Boston Music Scene. As far as I am aware, we're the only ones doing this (regional television offering the a music blogger the chance to share a curated experience) both here in New England or anywhere else. It's all been very exciting and only going to get more so...

WHAT'S COOL - The show offers segments with people around the Boston and Cambridge scenes. We capture the behind closed doors and get great interviews with people you need to know about. As a music lover (first and foremost) and a devotee to Boston and all the people that make our scene go, this is so exciting!

For those reading this outside New England, my plan is to find a way to keep this going and bring the show out of market. I can use all your help. Please talk up the show and share with a friend. If you know a company that would be a great sponsor, please bring our show to their attention. And most importantly - watch the shows. It's good stuff.

MORE COOL STUFF - We have a bunch of great color segments - stuff you won't see on any other show anywhere. We have a Boston music soundtrack and if you spend any amount of time at shows you'll see a lot of people you know. Pacing and camera work are brilliant. I want to thank Director Jonathan Case, who also produces the series with me. He's a really talented dude with a creative mind and a great sense of humor. Regardless of what happens after the first 8 episodes air, I made a friend - and a very gifted one at that.

THANK YOU - I must thank Guitar Center for taking a chance in bringing our first episodes on air. I think you will be rewarded for your involvement. So people, if you need gear - that's who you need to see to get it done.

The Show Airs on WSBK 38 tonight (Sunday evenings) at 11pm. Check your local listings. If you see us, tune in. And please tell a friend about the show and the music you find.

Sara Bareilles at Life is good

Photos by Kira Doucette

Memories from Life is good 2012
Prowse Farm - Canton, MA

FESTIVAL COVERAGE - Any Sara Bareilles fan will tell you that one of their favorite things about the star isn't necessarily her music (while there's so much there to love) - most will tell you it's her self-effacing, funny and real personality that really won them over. By evoking stories of living in Los Angeles (" I'm a singer-songwriter, who lives in LA, who's from a small town, who never thought she'd live in LA, but she does... I have met the most amazing people here in LA and now I can't imagine leaving. Except.... I hate the traffic. I don't care what kind of car you drive... it sucks. End of story.") Bareilles has a way with words. And with people.

Soulive at Life is good!

Memories from Life is good 2012

FESTIVAL COVERAGE - For 13 years, guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans have proved to be perhaps the best soul-jazz organ trio of their generation. They bring with them on stage, ghosts of jazz's past and in the moment those spirits meet the band's funk-heavy jams. A huge addition to this year's Life is good, Soulive brought the goods!
