The Master

Thoughts on Film...
by Chris Fullerton

Chris Fullerton is a Music & Film writer.
He lives in Austin, Texas.

It’s that time of year, folks. The weather is a little crisper. The leaves start turning colors. And Hollywood starts rolling out the Oscar hopefuls.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is, for many, the most anticipated movie of the year to date. Anderson is a master, he wrote and directed cinematic heavyweights: There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love. The man has a pedigree, and I was expecting nothing less than greatness when I bought my ticket on opening day.

The film begins at the end of World War II, with seaman Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) leaving the service and returning home to readjust to civilian life. It’s hard for him, as he seems to have a talent for getting himself into trouble. This talent has roots in his other gift, which is concocting potent, if not deadly, alcoholic drinks, which he consumes in great quantities.

It’s this path that leads Freddie to “the Master” Lancaster Dodd, (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a self-styled (L.R. Hubbard-like) philosopher who leads a group known as The Cause. Dodd is fascinated with Quell, much to the chagrin of his family and followers. He takes the young man under his wing and seeks to cure him of all his social ills and self-destructive behavior. The tensions between Freddie and the Dodds become increasingly evident as they plead with Lancaster that the man is beyond help and his erratic and often violent behavior will be The Cause’s downfall.

At one point, Peggy (Amy Adams) tells Freddie he quit must drinking or leave the group. He promises he will, but the promise never comes to fruition. When police arrive to arrest Lancaster for practicing medicine without the proper license, Freddie attacks the police and is arrested as well. While locked up, Quell explodes in a fit of rage, calling Dodd, who is in the adjoining cell, a fraud who is making it up as he goes along. Dodd responds quite firmly that he is the only person who has ever liked Freddie.

The outside pressures are taking their tolls on Dodd, as well, with constant scrutiny that he’s leading a cult, and upon the release of his second book, his follower’s questioning that he’s changing the method he had been prescribing all along.

Finally, during an exercise in the desert where Dodd has Freddie, and his daughter and son-in-law, riding a motorcycle as fast as possible, Quell breaks free and returns back to his hometown to reconnect with the girl he left behind years earlier. Unfortunately, he returns to find that she’s long married with children, living in Alabama. While sleeping in a movie theater, Freddie dreams Dodd calls him, and asks him to come to England. When Freddie arrives, Peggy again insists that he isn’t willing to change his life and that he has no business as part of the cause. After a brief conversation, Dodd realizes that his wife is right, and sends Freddie back out into the world.

The acting in this film is superb, from top to bottom. Phoenix is at once sympathetic and unlikable, and if Philip Seymour Hoffman isn’t in your top five actors of all-time, you should probably rewrite your list. In addition, Anderson has shot a beautiful film. My only problem is the conclusion. Through all the psychological exercises and turmoil, I don’t feel that Freddie Quell changed much, and that’s a bit disheartening. But as I said, Anderson has created the film you expected, epic and interesting and moving, if lacking a firm resolution.

VERDICT: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The Master will be the favorite for Best Picture. Not my favorite, but the favorite.

Two Nights to CRASH SAFELY

SHOWS OF THE WEEK
A 2-Night Music Benefit
featuring 10 live acts!

Crash Safely is a two-day music fundraiser aimed at helping raise awareness and money for the Cause of MS. Multiple Sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Most people are diagnosed in their 20's and 30's. But MS lasts a lifetime. There is no cure. Did you know that every hour of every day someone in the United States is diagnosed with MS?

Hitting Close to Home:

Amanda Nichols, former writer for The Noise, Boston's Weekly Dig, YourFlesh Magazine and current contributor to Chunklet Magazine, was diagnosed in 2008 with Relapsing-Remitting MS. Amanda plays out occasionally, sitting in with friends, but was a session musician who's worked with Jeffrey Simmons, Darryl Blood/Tiltmaster and John Haydon.

Pete Hayes of The Figgs was diagnosed within months of Amanda with the same form of MS. Pete takes to actual bike in the BikeNYC Challenge in October, while Amanda's a virtual rider, books the shows and created the web site. Everyone playing the shows is either a bandmate, friend or family member.

Everyone involved in Crash Safely has someone close to them who lives with MS.

METRIC in Boston!

Photographic Evidence
by 5342 Studios

The Orpheum Theater
Boston, MA - 9/20/12

FROM BEHIND THE LENS: "A fresh new season at The Orpheum Theater kicked off with Metric. The classic venue could barely contain the energy from Emily Haines and crew. The way she owns the stage it made the room far more intimate that you typically associate in a room with a balcony. One of the hottest acts today, you don't want to miss Metric!"

Ben Nichols

Photographic Evidence
by Melissa Brawner

Neumeier's Rib Room

Fort Smith, AR
9/14/12

FROM BEHIND THE LENS - When Lucero goes on break from their near-constant touring, lead singer Ben Nichols will take off on his motorcycle and travel on a solo tour. That's what Ben did earlier this month, making several stops in the South with his Bikeriders, Music, Motorcycles and Tattoos tour. I had a chance to see Nichols and opener Adam Faucett on a drizzly Friday night in Fort Smith, AR at Neumeier's Rib Room, a unique part indoor, part outdoor venue.

About 30 minutes into his acoustic set, Nichols called John Moreland to the stage. Moreland had opened for Ben the night before in Oklahoma City and had put on a hell of a show, Nichols telling the crowd, "this is what real songwriting and guitar playing sound like."

Nichols returned to the stage and went through Lucero standards like " It Gets The Worst At Night", "Mom", "Hold Me Close", and of course, "Bikeriders". He finished up the set with some songs from Lucero's earliest albums, "Tennessee" and "That Much Further West".  Nichols also performed a recent solo song, "Shelter" that he wrote for his brother's movie "Take Shelter."

SORNE

ONE TO WATCH / WORLD PREMIERE

NEW MUSIC VIDEO - This is the world premiere of, Omnipotent, a theatrical music video from SORNE from Austin. We first caught wind of this celebrated live act after their tour last year with indie sonic landscapers TV on the Radio. Since that time, SORNE have won over hearts and minds wherever they have performed for their standout live performances - which have been said are capable of throwing audiences members into a trance-like state. This power and majesty has invoked some high praise...

"It's as if Freddie Mercury, David Byrne, an early David Bowie, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Cure's Robert Smith had gotten together and had a baby. He (Morgan Sorne) is an enigma, chanting like an ancient tribesman, stomping like he's dancing for rain, and whirling like a helicopter, while his voice scales the ranges of the mesmerizing and hypnotic, to almost unnaturally Edith Piaf high notes." - Stephen Macmillan Moser of Austin Chronicle

THEATRICS - The Omnipetent video was directed and produced by Austin's Onion Creeek Productions.  SORNE is no stranger to the persuasive video. We just learned a short film based on the characters and narrative behind the band's newest record,  House of Stone, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year in March.

Mixing "in the nape of your neck" voice and heart-talk of Cliff Kuhn-Lloyd, guru level producer ears of Sam Burke, demi-god video music of Ethan Goldhammer and quality control of Adam "rare bird" Schortman, CliffLight gears up for a year of beautiful noise and baby making bangers.

Life is good is back this weekend! This festival is a two‐day celebration of music, optimism and charity featuring well-known and emerging music talent, interactive arts, games and entertainment for the whole family. The Festival creates a community of fundraisers who share the experience and become empowered by helping charities that benefit children and the community through various fundraising initiatives. Essentially - Life is good is about music and people. And that's why we support it. That's what we're all about too.

Listening to the New STARS

New Music of Note
Let's have a listen...

Canada's STARS are back with their Sixth Album

NEW POP SONGS - Every one of the twelve originals on Stars' new record, "The North," features significant input from all the band members. “This is the five of us attacking each song and turning it into something that is all of ours,” says Amy Millan, who shares lead vocals with Torquil Campbell.

This is the 6th record from Stars and in some ways it is the nearest to date to their 2004 breakout "Set Yourself On Fire," a record that that put this little Canadian act on the global radar. There have been many songs since but the continued thread is solid story-telling and a characteristic smooth presentation. This is the stuff on the outskirts of dreams and we'll be listening to it for a very long time...

THE US TOUR - If you buy tickets to any of the shows on the upcoming US Tour which kicks off tomorrow, Stars will give you an mp3 download of the new album! ... I've said it before, but it's really wonderful to see bands doing creative things to get closer to their fans and to provide extra value. This certainly qualifies. Come out early each evening to catch sets by supporting acts Diamond Rings and California Wives.

Star & Micey - I Can't Wait

NEW MUSIC VIDEO - Today we are really honored to unleash probably the coolest new music video I've seen this year ("slap!!"), and probably the hookiest indie pop single of 2012 - all at once. 'I Can't Wait' is the title track of the new Star & Micey EP out on Ardent in just 30 days.

This song and video, directed by Jonathan Pekar and edited by Ples Hampton, are enough reason to get even new fans really excited about what is sure to be one of the better releases of 2012. Star & Micey fans and industry folks already know the truth - this band has got the goods!

The new EP was produced by Dennis Herring (Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse, Wavves, Ben Folds), captures the Memphis four-piece's incredible, fan-favorite live performances. (For those who haven't yet seen the band perform live, the stage is really a cross between a raucous live jam and a hand-clapping gospel church. If you give them a hour and attend a show, I'll show you a new fan!) The new record will feature some high-powered guest performances including Big Star’s Jody Stephens on drums, Dennis Herring on guitars and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s Jessie Munson on violin.

Star & Micey are Joshua Cosby (Acoustic Guitar and Vocals), Geoff Smith (Bass, Vocals and Percussion), Nick Redmond (Electric Guitar and Vocals) and Jeremy Stanfill (Drums and Vocals).

BE PART OF THE PROCESS - Star & Micey have initiated a Pledge Music Campaign to help support their release of the new record and to help integrate fans into the creative process. This is a great band doing it right! Watch the video they crafted and check out the great prizes (including the new music) you can get by helping support the band.

Matt Hopper - Jody and the Kid (Kris Kristofferson)

HOT NEW COVER SONG
File Under: Too Damn Good!

Hopper does Kristofferson

Matt Hopper is an American troubadour with rock and roll in his veins, a weathered voice and blues hands. Though currently based in Idaho he cut his teeth on the Alaskan music scene - where he still works, writes and records. Hopper has released six albums, both solo and with his band The Roman Candles.

Here, Hopper does a gorgeous version of Kris Kristofferson's "Jody and the Kid." The song will appear on an upcoming double-LP tribute record of Kristofferson's songs featuring Hopper and 24 other artists... If you can appreciate a good cover, this looks to be a winner...

Thieving Irons: Behold, This Dreamer!

Best of 2012 Album Series
Someone You Need to Know

BOSTON! Advanced Notice
Thieving Irons play Cafe 939
Saturday, 9/15/12
[Purchase TICKETS]

ABOUT THE SOUND - I converse and work with hundreds of musicians each year. Every band is different and there are lots of different ideas about what makes it go, but Brooklyn's Nate Martinez stands out in my mind as being perhaps the most passionate about his music. He has recorded and toured with The National and Alexei Murdoch. And everywhere he's gone, Martinez has left an indelible mark on bands and fans alike.

I've known Nate for some 5-6 years ago. At that time, Nate was the guitarist in my favorite band, a fiery Brooklyn four-piece, PELA. Two years ago, Nate released his first record under the moniker THIEVING IRONS. The results on "This Midnight Hum" were remarkable (streaming audio). We celebrated this effort on our BEST OF 2010 LIST.

Two years removed, Martinez has again crafted a masterpiece. This one, "Behold, This Dreamer!" is both different in an evolutionary sense but still intensely personal and more celebratory than it's predecessor. Exquisite, honest, exacting - this is a focused effort. Nate sent me a copy just prior to release and it's taken me this long to put it into words. Let me make this clear: This is one of the best efforts of 2012.

Nate Martinez: "In some ways the story of this album began in a bookstore in Chicago when I found a book by William De La Mare titled 'Behold, This Dreamer!'. I was moved by the title and opened up the book to read more about it. I found that the subject matter mirrored topics that I had been exploring with a couple songs I had already written for the next album. The cover page reads: Of Reverie, Night, Sleep, Dream, Love-Dreams, Nightmare, Death, the Unconscious, the Imagination, Divination, the Artist, and Kindred Subjects.

"The topics I had been exploring in my songwriting were of ghosts, time- what it means, how we choose to spend it, and dreaming. The synchronicity of this moment had a pretty profound effect on me. I immediately bought the book but chose to never read it, only using it as a compass for my journey to complete this album. As an homage to the book and that moment I named an untitled song that I had been working on "Behold, This Dreamer! and immediately decided to name the album the same. I spent the next four months writing the remainder of the album and enlisting my close friends Dan Brantigan, Josh Kaufman and Andy Nauss to help record it.
But in many ways it feels like an album that has been in the making since I picked up an electric guitar at the age of 12, possibly even earlier... Now I am confident saying that I have found a voice that is my own. "

Paste Magazine:
Behold, This Dreamer! is an album made with close friends in a particularly fertile, focused environment. The songs are wrought, considered, purposeful—delicately structured and impeccably stated. It’s pretense-less guitar-framed rock ’n’ roll, but with a cosmic, almost startling energy. Rarely does something so ostensibly commonplace call for such meditations.

Stars in Coma

From the Mailbag

So, here's the deal. I can't begin to listen to, digest or publish everything we receive. About once or twice a month in 2012, I open new mail and so long as the stuff is potentially of interest to our music-crazed audiences, we'll publish it. This week, we introduce you to the fifth album from these talented and wily musicians from Sweden. Meet Stars in Coma, the brainchild of singer, songwriter and producer André Brorsson. Brorsson named the latest Stars in Coma album after focusing on the thoughts that entered his mind at night. Midnight Puzzle's layered sounds, unexpected song craft and unusual instrumentation all add up to one memorable record!

Best of 2012: COYOTE KOLB

Photographic Evidence
by 5342 Studios

New Photos from
JP Music Festival 9/8/12
in Boston, MA

AN AMAZING LIVE ACT - Somewhere along the way the members of Coyote Kolb weren't let in on the silent Northern exclusion against great Blues Rock offerings... as they are currently one of the very best live acts playing under that sound profile in the Northeast. We were very lucky to catch up with the band at this year's JP Music Festival and I had the distinct honor of introducing them on stage.

What comes next is a series of songs challenging the notion that great southern-style Americana- and Blues Rock can only come from the South. "United State" is the amazing new record from this cool talented five-piece. These songs was recorded and mixed by Eric Welch at Boston's own Chillhouse Studios. I've been listening to this one all week, it's totally infectious but completely grounded as well - causing it to remain with me long after the music's stopped. This record needs to be owned.

Based on these songs, the band: singer and guitar player Chadley Kolb, Noel Coakley on pedal steel and banjo, Owen Beane on the bass guitar, James Clifford on slide guitar and harmonica, and percussionist Matty Maybruck - seem to fully understand their role in fusing Blues and Southern Rock in their own, very special way. A performance can quickly have hundreds of heads bobbing, bodies bouncing... Moments later, they can bring it down and play a slow number with haunting pedal steel. It's not something audiences in the Northeast get to experience everyday but for these guys, it's the only way they know how.

Boston-area audiences can catch Coyote Kolb as one of the featured acts at the New England Americana Music Festival tomorrow night (9/14/12) WEB /EVENT

Toy

Underground Sounds
by Tim Osbourne

Tim Osbourne is a Music writer in the UK.
He covers emerging artists for rslblog.com

Toy played their very first gig only last year, at London’s Cave Club, which of course, happens to be run by UK indie scene darlings The Horrors. Fortunately for Toy, the word-beating Horrors took this emerging quintet under their wing offering them support slots. This soon brought them to the attention of electronic music legend Richard Fearless (Death In Vegas and Primal Scream.) The band's first album debuts this week in Europe [Editor's Note: Amazon UK won't let me buy it yet. If you are a rather impatient soul like me and you find yourself reading this from America, go to Toy's website (link is below) and stream the audio!]

Relying heavily on the trippy garage music of the late 60s and German art-rock (or "krautrock" as it is often affectionately termed) of the early 70s, the band more than tips its hat to My Bloody Valentine on its earliest material – most readily on first single 'Left Myself Behind', but there is so much potential for growth and development within this sound. Toy could indeed follow in the footsteps of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sonic Youth and Interpol, and perhaps even eclipse them (well, maybe not Sonic Youth) in terms of mainstream success. Only time will tell but there is solid reason to think this group will keep on getting better and better.

New from Ty Segall

New Music Video
Someone You Should Know

We missed NxNE this year. But last year when I was there, this was one of the three or four bands everyone wanted to see... Hailing from San Francisco, Ty Segall already have a huge underground following - their fans are kids who like distortion and worship at the alters of early Pink Floyd and the dark fuzzy, post-modern pop noir of Brian Jonestown Massacre, rejecting modern pop and "alternative" song craft. What we have hear is a completely distinctive sound and it's being embraced by young audiences the world over.

What we have for you today (above) is the brand new Ty Segall music video, THE HILL. In four weeks, the group will release their new full-length, Twins, and they will tour the globe. Don't know them yet? Get crackin'

Alexa Woodward

ACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Selected Music Videos of Note

One of our favorite songwriters and live performers is the lovely Alexa Woodward. We haven't written about her in the last couple of years and in that time she released a record. The fact that we haven't given this effort it's proper comeuppance gives me pause.. It's tough to make all the rounds, but it pains me at times that I don't have the time to properly elevate all the great stuff we receive. I was reminded by that (and Alexa's beautiful voice tonight) when I watched her video for "Weary" (above - it's the title song from Alexa's latest). Take a couple of minutes to watch this video and be sure to check out the fan reaction to her performance in the clip! After that, you will be well-advised to move on to her album for more of the same. She's definitely one to know.
