VIRAL VIDEO - I Am (If You Are)

VIRAL VIDEO SELECTION
Do Robots dream of Love?

Viral Video is a periodic series we run celebrating music and moving images. Today we take a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge and share a new video from our indie friends in ironic rock outfit Murder Mystery. If the name rings a bell with you regulars you might remember some of the previous stuff we did with them a couple of years back (click the tags below for the 411) and it was just last week that we featured a new holiday classic from Murder Mystery's Jeremy Coleman, who is going by the solo moniker Jmo these days. Check out the video for, "Santa, if You Do Exist" right here.

Robot Heart by Dion Fischer

What's on the Viral Video menu today - Murder Mystery gives us a new take on a classic theme of man v nature and man v creator (my literature professor would be so proud.) Of course we see shadows here - light cast down the same dark hallways Mary Shelley strolled during the penning of Frankenstein. (Ok, mix in a healthy nerdy dose of creative fan ala Weird Science and I think we've nailed it.)

Undercutting this tale of technology and self-inflicted madness, is the plight of the newly created - a robot girl who becomes self aware... This kind of deep, deep storytelling through music and video is what Viral Video is all about.

What's Ahead For The Band - On January 16th, Murder Mystery are digitally releasing a 6 song EP of indie pop gems called "Problems."

"The new stuff is less guitar-driven. It's heading more in the synth-pop direction," Coleman wrote to us this week. "Its really great and fun and catchy." So it looks like we'll be looking for more from this band real, real soon...

Meet The Staves

Our man in England reports...
Thoughts on Shows

The Staves are sisters; Camilla, Jessica and Emily, hailing from Watford, just north of London. They sing in close harmony, accompanied by Jessica’s simple-but-effective Paul Simon-like fingerpicked guitar. Conveniently blessed with complementary vocal ranges, their music is delicate, simple yet finely crafted.

A couple of weeks ago, I caught The Staves in a pub down a rain-lashed street in the English city of Nottingham, I saw the future.... They will be supporting The Civil Wars, everybody’s favourite CMA-nominated, double-Grammy-nominated duo, on their January tour in the United States.

The Staves - Mexico EP
NEW - JUST RELEASED!

purchase on: itunes / amazon

The Staves possess wise old heads on their young shoulders, and if you’re ready to spot them you can hear the influence of Simon & Garfunkel or Crosby, Stills & Nash in their harmonies and Joni Mitchell in their phrasing. They sing with an awareness of the power they wield, more knowing than naive... And seeing them live reveals that they’ve taken these ethereal close-harmony pieces and have done something distinctly English with them.

They also sing with astonishing precision, seemingly able to start and stop singing together, moving from solos or duets to full three-part harmony without cues, snapping suddenly into unison for a line before swooping gloriously back into lush, full harmony again. Live, their stunningly intelligent singing is mixed with charmingly humble chat.

The Staves' debut full-length, the first ever collaboration between father and son producers Glyn and Ethan Johns, is slated for release early 2012 on Atlantic. We will be there.

Happy New Year, Dear

Thoughts on the Calendar's Turn
from One of New England's Very Best

FREE DOWNLOAD!

The Hush Now have always been a bit of a musical enigma. A quirky, but talent-steeped Boston band that's proven to be hugely popular on tour have somehow remained relatively hidden from sight during this city's most recent round of music recognition. None of The Hush Now's accomplishments have been lost on us. Memos - the band's powerful new material, offers up their best poppy and twisted soul rock to date. The best work from one of the top regional talents in New England this year. In September, we named The Hush Now our Artist of the Month and you will soon see their record added to our Annual Best of List.

Enter the Holidays: If you should have no other reason to know The Hush Now, dear reader, it should be that they are possibly the best holiday single band in the Northeast. Possibly the best anywhere. Here are the examples: Christmas 2009, Halloween 2010, Christmas 2010, Halloween 2011 and now New Years 2012. This new one, "Happy New Year, Dear" is a bit more melancholy than the others but it's classic THN; emotion, quirky grace and just beautiful. Get to know this band. [I recommend you check all of the links above - editor.]

Atlas Sound "Parallax"

On Further Review
by Cara Giaimo

Incredibly prolific, self-avowedly monomaniacal, and outspoken to a fault, Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox never does anything halfway. It’s unsurprising, then, that when he records solo under the name Atlas Sound, he goes all the way solo. Cox wrote, composed and recorded everything on the third Atlas Sound album, Parallax, on twenty-one different instruments, ranging from Telecaster to rhythm box to “collage.” This level of control allows Cox to go wherever he wants with his music, and on Parallax, he’s chosen to travel inward. The record takes the listener on a sonic and emotional journey into Cox’s interior landscape, with results that are often beautiful, sometimes difficult, and always interesting.

This landscape turns out to be lonely, but surprisingly varied and expansive. Cox relies largely on his usual sonic palette, anchoring his songs in fuzz-padded guitar, precise drumbeats, and bright clusters of synthesizer. But by constantly rearranging how these elements are clumped together, bringing in other instruments for cameos, and loosening or tightening the reins on his singing voice, Cox builds every song into a new scenario of isolation. The lyrics, which read like pages from a diary that occasionally slips into the surreal, give voice to whichever emotional facet of Cox inhabits each scene. Propulsive opener “The Shakes” posits Cox as a rich and famous loner stuck in the trappings of his life – “see the horror on my face/I can finally leave this place” he sings, proven wrong by guitars and drums that endlessly entrap him. “Parallax” opens with chugs and gasps and describes an inability to entirely relate to others – “your pain is probably equal,” he allows, “probably” being the operating word. “Doldrums” finds him describing, sing-songy and resigned, “a little boy who went through hell” while a cave of piano and timpanis expands around his voice.

Not all solitude is bad, though – in “Terra Incognita,” he plays a lone explorer, crooning tales of traveling with only “cards and caravans” for company over glistening guitar. Four minutes in, the song changes – it crests a dune and shows us little galaxies made of trembling notes and nonsense syllables, immersive and lovely.

Parallax album cover...

Atlas Sound - Terra Incognita

The richness of the sounds and the construction of the arrangements – and the bravery of the soul-baring that they evoke so well – make Parallax a rewarding listen. But it can be hard to be hemmed in so close with someone, even a gifted musician like Cox, for nearly fifty minutes. By the time the closer, “Lightworks,” comes around, listeners will be glad to hear him, voice strutting, exalt that “everywhere I look there is a light and it will guide the way.” Where the light is leading – we’ll have to wait for the next record to find out.

Jaggery - Coventry Carol

New Music for X-Mas
A Real Christmas Carol!

Breathtaking and dramatic, Boston's JAGGERY moves through exotic soundscapes to the sounds of Petaluma Vale's Celtic harp; jazzy, African-tinged percussion and contrabass; and avant-garde classical viola courtesy of Rachel Jayson. At the center of the churning musical storm is Singer Mali's otherworldly voice - ethereal, ebullient, tempting, and taunting...

The Coventry Carol is a Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. The carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which King Herod orders all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. The lyrics represent a mother's lament for her doomed child. It is the only carol that has survived from this play.

David Lynch – Crazy Clown Time

On Further Review
by Julie Stoller

What's the deal with David Lynch?

David Lynch - Stone's Gone Up

As the man responsible for blowing minds with the surreal, supernatural, ridiculously addictive soap opera spectacular that was Twin Peaks, and such deliciously twisted films such as Blue Velvet, Lost Highways, and Mulholland Drive, it was inevitable that David Lynch, on his debut album, would conjure up something quite interesting...

Though Lynch has notably collaborated with Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Polish pianist Marek Zebrowski (Inland Empire), Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse (Dark Night of the Soul), and most recently Chrysta Bell (This Train), Crazy Clown Time (available now from Sunday Best Recordings) is Lynch's first solo effort. It was recorded at his studio in Mulholland Drive with engineer Dean Hurley (who also contributes guitar and drums). Lynch plays guitar and sings on the album, and infuses it with his edgy, off-kilter persona.

Lynch’s music is nostalgic with its Duane-Eddy-inspired twangy rock; futuristic with its robotic electro-pop dance beats; and eerily haunting with its sinister slide guitar blues, heavy reverb, and sense of foreboding. It’s a strange trip, though it is deeply infused with that unsettling “Lynchian vibe” that should be warmly familiar to fans of his previous work. The lyrics are cryptic, with vaguely disturbing, deviant phrases.

This is definitely not the sort of album for a lighthearted romp on the beach or a jog at the gym. Nor it is appropriate to drift off to sleep to, unless of course you’d like to invite some bizarre dreams. It is, however, a potentially perfect soundtrack for these odd times.

Jesse Dee + Tim Gearan "Winter Wonderland"

New Music for X-Mas
Mercy! Now, that's a Holiday Accompaniment!

A LETTER FROM SANTA - This version of “Winter Wonderland” was recorded live at Q Division Studios last week. We think it came out pretty great and wanted to share it with you.

Me on acoustic guitar. Jesse on piano. Both of us singing together – with Paul Janovitz on camera, Pat DiCenso behind the board, and Ed Valauskas on sleigh bells (we fired him…you will not hear any sleigh bells on this recording).

This video is for our “12 Days of Christmas Dual Holiday Exclusive Package” that Jesse and I are offering starting as part of both of our Pledge Music campaigns. Jesse is also doing a Pledge campaign just in case you were unaware. We started our things about a week apart, and thought this would be a fun thing to do together.

From 12/20 thru 12/31, if you pledge on the new Tim Gearan CD, you will get a free download of Jesse Dee’s new record as well + the MP3 of “Winter Wonderland” for just $15.00.

If you pledge on Jesse’s CD on his page, you’ll also get my record as a free download + the MP3 for just $15.00.

George Washington always told the truth, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth rock, 8 more days of Hanukkah.

Soldier’s fought to protect our rights, 8 more days of Hanukkah.

Franc Cinelli - Blue Christmas

New Music for X-Mas
Treat the Holiday Like an Amusement Park

Singer-songwriter Franc Cinelli was born in Rome, Italy and raised in London, his Music 101 course came from his mother's vinyl collection: Springsteen, The Police, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd & Bob Marley. He learned his trade playing shows, jumping on National Express coaches to play gigs in pubs, venues and front rooms from Hastings to Stornaway and back again until there were enough songs to make a record. His debut album "Glue" under the moniker of “Goodtimes Goodtimes” released independently, helped him reach out to a bigger audience and took him on several tours around the US where his alt/country & blues influences matured. At first, this involved fitting in as many gigs as possible in a single night at the Greenwich Village coffee shops, bars and record stores, then graduating to playing seminal venues like Pianos and The Living Room on Ludlow Street, Sidewalk Cafe' and Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan New York, Third and Lindsley and The Basement in Nashville. Having just wrapped up a tour of the EU with his band, Cinelli waits in Rome for the holidays and for the New Year ahead.

DAN BLAKESLEE

Michael Winters photo

There is little doubt in my mind that tonight's profile artist Dan Blakeslee, a singer-songwriter, graphic designer, original artist and performer (Dr. Gasp [listen] is but one stage name) is probably one of the most gifted all-around artists in New England. And he's a pretty damn great guy. I'm always happy to run into him. We see he got together with Sleepover Shows recently (the best video blog in the Northeast - period) and the results were this really beautiful little number. I'm going to have the line, "Houses of Gold," stuck in my head all weekend. Not a bad thing at all, but I do wonder if there's something you can take for that??

Parlour Bells - O Holiday

New Music for X-Mas
Non-Denominational Milk 'n' Cookies

What started as perhaps a tongue-in-cheek music project by Nate Leavitt & Glenn di Benedetto (the pair wanted to "play" for the wrecking ball at the demolition party for the former Faces nightclub in Boston) - has become something much more. Here is the brand new track... O Holiday!

ONE TO WATCH - The year preceding has seen the band release new songs and add seasoned new members; Magen Tracy, Brandon Erdos and Brendan Boogie (none of which is to be sneezed at - each has their own New England musical backstory) and - then there was the night in which Parlour Bells covered Jane's Addiction, catapulting the lore into something else entirely...

The Vivs 2nd Annual Holiday Bash and Music Benefit

Boston-area Show of the Week
by Julie Stoller

Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington MA
Saturday, December 17, 6:30 p.m.

TICKETS - All ages, $10/kids under 12; $15/advance, $18/day of show, $12/Musicians, students and artists (honor system; identify yourself at the door) Info & Directions / Facebook

In the holiday spirit of giving, and in the spirit of really fine lineups that you’re not likely to see at other times of the year, The Vivs present their 2nd Annual Holiday Bash, to benefit The Children’s Room in Arlington, an important organization that supports grieving children, teens and families in over 80 cities and towns in Massachusetts.

Enjoy an evening in the classy and comfy Regent Theatre with some impressive Boston musicians, including The Vivs, Big Dipper, Tanya Donelly, Bill Janovitz, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, and The Lesley Ellis School Kids’ Chorus - who perform both traditional songs and contemporary rock, pop, and post-punk favorites (like The Church’s “Under The Milky Way”).

The absolutely charming exuberant pop sounds of The Vivs are based around the warm sultry low/angelic high vocal harmonies of guitarist/songwriter Karen Harris and keyboardist Terri Brosius. In 2009 they released their debut album Mouth To Mouth, and are busy working on their follow-up. In the meantime, they’ve recently released an EP called Why So Dark? They don’t play out that often, so you’d best take advantage of this rare phenomenon.

THE VIVS
Web / Facebook

Formed by ex-Volcano Suns members Gary Waleik and Steve Michener, Big Dipper was a vital part of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Boston music scene. They dissolved in 1992, but with Merge Records’ 3-CD release “Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology” in 2008 [RSL piece on the album here - Ed], the band reformed for some live shows. They’ll have a new album out early next year (and their music is in two new films – Losers Take All and I Melt With You), but they’re very selective about their live appearances. This is their first and only official show since 2008, so it’s quite a special occasion.

Two legendary Boston musicians, Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly) and Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom) will be performing together this evening. Yowsa. Tanya’s most recent release was “Girl With the Black Tights” in 2010, in collaboration with singer-songwriter Brian Sullivan’s band, Dylan In The Movies [http://www.myspace.com/dylaninthemovies]. Bill Janovitz, of course, has been busy with Buffalo Tom, who most recently celebrated their 25-year anniversary with a 3-night stint at Brighton Music Hall. Their latest album, Skins, was released back in February.

The power and fury bass, drums and vocals duo of Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein of Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling grace the proceedings with their uncompromising cacophony that is like a deeply satisfying existential purge. Or, if you prefer, an auditory sweat lodge. One of the most talked about live acts of 2011 here in Boston. The music video for the song below just landed the pair on Time Magazine's annual 10 Most Creative Videos List!

This is a big night for the Lesley Ellis Children’s Chorus, which is made up of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders from Lesley Ellis School in Arlington. Their performance, “Rise – The Voices of Leslie Ellis,” will be their first appearance outside their school community.

Brett Milano (Boston Phoenix, Boston rock historian) will be this evening’s emcee...

The Children’s Room offers a wide variety of services to help families deal with loss and other stressful life events. These include educational workshops, training sessions for teachers and caregivers, family consultations, crisis response, peer support groups, resources, and more. They were selected as a Massachusetts 2006 Catalogue for Philanthropy charity [http://www.catalogueforphilanthropy.org].

An Eldridge Rodriguez Christmas

New X-Mas EP this Week!
Someone You Need to Know

ER - Christmas Eve (At Old Country Buffet)
an exclusive RSL Mix version!

There's a point in the listening to this simply amazing 3-song holiday EP (on MIDRIFF) - when you realize just how good Eldridge Rodriguez and his crew are... In this humble music writer's opinion, ER (as he is known) is producing some of the best new music in the Boston area, both as an independent artist and with his band, The Beatings.

But in the name of keeping things how they are and to truly enjoy the bleak holiday songs, just get into this holiday treat while it's still available (LINK limited time $2.99 download) and ignore for a minute that this guy's been doing this all year long... Previously in 2011, ER launched one of the region's best studio albums in "You Are Released." (Review) This is one of the area's best musicians and a handpicked group of friends making the best music of their lives.

The Christmas EP is classic Eldridge Rodriguez - the three songs share a realistic if not bleak telling of the season - the history of growing up on the Allston-Brighton Line. Rodriguez's pen often complains of heartbreak, isolationist settings and repeatedly include themes of lost place, - his style also has a pioneer quality - the protagonist, a perceptive character nearly always, is empowered and strong in his will to survive it all... Find out why I once wrote that "Eldridge Rodriguez is Boston's Dark, Beating Heart... " - Ryan Spaulding

FILLIGAR MAKE THE LIST - It's December and we needed to wrap up our Best Live Acts of 2011 List. We couldn't think of many bands leaving jaws on the floor like these guys from Chicago.

Filligar played our SxSW show in Austin to rave reviews. They raised the roof at our show at CMJ in New York this year. A tour through Europe earned the group gobs of new fans and a future on the other side of the Atlantic. So much more is on the way for them...

But what's in store for you now is this new music... Trust us on this one: this is one of the country's very best live acts.
