Aloud - The Cash and the Pearls

New Music Right Now
World Premiere mp3!

w/ never before seen images
Live at SxSW 2011
Austin, TX - 03/18/11
by 5342 Studios

In close conversation, I've - more than once, credited Aloud of being the most professional of New England acts. (This is the type of theoretical conversations that music blog hipsters embark on when accompanied by like-minded companions over drinks.) Why Aloud? All decisions are made by the band mindful of long term personal & professional objectives. At the center of it all are a pair of talented human beings willing to push all their chips in the middle of the table for their art. And there's a ton of hard work that never seems to end. It's the kind of dynamic that is impossible for a music critic, indeed any music lover, not to respect.

All that become even more clear over the last twelve months, a time period which saw lead vocalists/guitarists and newlywed songwriters Jen de la Osa and Henry Beguiristain craft the album, Exile, their best material to date, tour the country on a shoestring budget and push creative boundaries.

The four-piece is rounded out by bassist Charles Murphy and drummer Mike Tucker. While it seems most other bands simply got louder this year. Aloud produced better songs that allowed them to make connections with fans. And they packed up their apartment for storage - let the lease elapse and took this show on the road, touring 42 states this year. It's been a time of rapid change for many the last year - but in some ways this duo have stayed their path and their focus on what matters most to them - making music that people can fall in love with.

Today we debut, "The Cash and the Pearls" for you. It's a fiery Exile session song that did not land on the album - primarily since it has stronger roots in the raucous and urgent live sets that predated this time. In this way, the band has come full circle with their fans and we love being the ones bringing it to you. "The Cash and the Pearls" is accompanying b-side “So Long” — recorded by the band's bassist Charles Murphy and mastered by Jeff Lipton (Arcade Fire, Wild Flag, Bon Iver, Spoon).

Bring Out Your Dead!

Boston slays Halloween
by Julie Stoller

SWIRLING GHOSTS & SCORCHING COVERS - During this season when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest, join in the tradition of great Boston-area bands who pay tribute to notable artists who have met an untimely demise, a contentious break-up, or are too stinkin’ famous to play at P.A.s Lounge. Or maybe you’re feeling particularly ghoulish and just want to polish your fangs and go out disco dancing. Whether it’s devotional or demonic forces that summon this weekend, we’ve got something for you.

There's quite a crowd represented this year, from Judas Priest to PJ Harvey, Nick Cave to The Beatles, Michael Jackson to Spinal Tap. Punk rock and prog rock; heavy metal hair bands and indie rock legends. Plus one recently departed soul, Amy Winehouse. Go forth and conjure some spirits.

The Hush Now's Halloween Song

Someone You Should Know

SCARY GOOD - Forget the fact that The Hush Now released one of New England's best albums this year (probably one of the three best records produced this year in Boston) let's focus on what they REALLY do best; make the best holiday music of any band going. We've seen them do it, time and again this is the band making the best indie pop Christmas and Halloween songs each year. (Last year's X-Mas and Halloween tracks were the best!)

It's that time of year again, and the guys from The Hush Now have not let us down. This is the brand new Halloween spook song, "The Legend of Dudley Town." If you dig it (and how could you not) you can download it HERE.

Deer Tick's Divine Providence

On Further Review...

w/ never before seen images
Live at the Newport Blues Cafe
Newport, RI - 07/29/11
by 5342 Studios

A PRIMER ON THE 'DEER TICK SOUND' - To paraphrase the lyrics of the new song, “The Bump,” Deer Tick is a full grown band, but they act like kids. Reactions can be mixed. When I play Deer Tick for someone for the first time, it’s either met with a bobbing head and a grin or a cross look followed by “I can’t take his voice.” As a familiar, I’m the first to admit John McCauley is more of a growler than a singer, but that’s really part of his charm. His whiskey-soaked howl is the perfect vehicle to deliver his lyrics about heartache and decadence.

What started as a pet project for McCauley, Deer Tick has ended up becoming musical force of nature.

THE NEW ALBUM - The band’s fresh new release, Divine Providence, explodes from the first bars of “The Bump,” a foot-stomping call-and-answer which embraces every flaw that encapsulates McCauley and his idea of rock and roll. McCauley shouts it out, as fair warning “I can take a tree and tear it from its roots. If you see me, I suggest you move.”

With songs like “Funny Word” and “Let’s All Go to the Bar” the Replacements comparison is obvious, but more importantly, it’s earned. It’s less ripping off The ‘Mats and more carrying on a tradition that seems to have been lost in the last couple of decades. It’s music that holds a groove, walking the line of controlled chaos with a swagger that could get your girlfriend knocked up on principle.

THE BAND IS TRYING NEW THINGS - There’s a distinct shifting of gears when drummer Dennis Ryan takes over lead vocals on “Clownin’ Around,” a track more reminiscent of previous Tick albums. The song is kept afloat by a steady acoustic strum and lyrics of poetic desperation. “I let my houseguests rest in my crawlspace / Don’t let anyone tell you that I’m a bad host / I take cover behind my white face paint while I battle my bitter father’s ghost.”

Guitarist Ian O’Neil also takes his turn on lead vocals on the tracks “Walkin’ Out the Door” (which oddly offers moments eerily similar to the Scooby Doo TV theme) and “Now It’s Your Turn,” an easy, piano-driven tune. They serve to add texture to the album as a whole and a complexity to the band that was previously absent.

McCAULEY IS IMPORTANT TO MUSIC - Make no mistake though, this is John McCauley’s band and this album is his middle finger to anyone who has ever tried to pin him down with a label. Forget “indie-folk-Americana.” He’s a man comfortable with who he is and the music he produces, as he states in “Electric;” “I don’t want to lose my sights / I don’t want to fight my fights on a big screen TV / I don’t want to burn your money.”

With songs like “Main Street” and “Miss K,” the band should garner a wider audience, but it’s pretty clear these boys are making music because they enjoy it, and anything else is just gravy.

In an era of hollow pop and brooding singer-songwriters, the pure kinetic energy of Deer Tick is a breath of fresh air, and by fresh air, I mean smoky barroom air that fills your lungs as you bounce and scream along with each song.

One to Watch: BLONDFIRE

New Artists on the Move
Brother-Sister Duo out of LA

by French Director Aurelien Levitan

LOS ANGELES - Erica's soft, breathy, haunting vocals are at the forefront of a sonic landscape in the vein of MGMT, the Smiths, and the Cardigans. Blondfire's songs have been featured in an iTunes Original EP and as the Free-Single-Of-The-Week in addition to appearing in films such as Monster-In-Law, Bangkok Dangerous and I Think I Love My Wife. They're also the first unsigned band to reach #1 on the iTunes Alternative chart.

Blondfire is the Brazilian/American duo of Bruce and Erica Driscoll.

Blondfire - Where the Kids Are

Their album, Win The Game (out Nov 1) is self-produced. The lead sing (above), Where The Kids Are, was mixed by Wally Gagel (of Muse, Folk Implosion and Gorillaz fame.) Definitely One to Watch on the road ahead.

Photographic Evidence

We Take You There...
The Middle East
Cambridge, MA - 7.20.11

Best New Sound of 2011 - Mississippi's Young Buffalo (Fat Possum) should be on your radar. After a year of making big-time noise and earning fans across the country, they finally got themselves on a big-time national tour, only to have the headliner cancel on them. Undaunted, the band have motored on and in doing so are achieving all new heights. If you get a chance to see this act in a small room this year, do it. It could be the last time they play intimate shows - that's my prediction.

Bonus: Head over to the band's website now to download their cover of Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a 17-yr-old Girl."

Buy a Used Car from the Black Keys?

New Music Ahead / December
Dynamic Duo Hint at a New LP

The Black Keys (2010 Artists of the Year) are back! Well, sort of. Dan Auerbach (guitar & vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums) are rock's tightest drum but they also know something it seems about promotional activities. Starting yesterday afternoon, people began chirping about the used car commercial the pair had launch to tease their new album Il Camino out in December. We, of course, hopped on board to give this a test ride.

We think the spot is cute and kinda funny - even if the van they use clearly isn't an El Camino at all... Maybe the video is intended to show how low "mainstream" really is and that "those in the know," really don't control much Could be satirical in nature, dealing with the public bait switch tactics of companies and the political system - or maybe we are just reading wayyyy too much into it. (It could be just a record about cars - but I somehow doubt it.) Here it is...

1994 EL CAMINO: 273,000 mi. 200 cubic-in. 3.3L 95hp V6 engine, 3-speed turbo autom shift, sapphire stylus, some ticks/pops, light surface noise. Working AM/FM radio, tan metalflake/woodie panels, some rust. Black vinyl seats.

Priced to sell – Grab the Keys and go!
Contact Pat or Dan at (330) 510-1206

FAKE WEBSITE - The band even setup a fake ad space online at "" - all good stuff. The number provided, by the way, goes to a promotional recording of Dan trying to sell you the van at a good price. Smart guys.

HOWLIN' FOR YOU - I am convinced that nothing, however will top the Brothers campaign in which the pair invented their own fictitious movie. Created the trailer as a music video promoting the album and even created a fake IMDB page to boot. You can see all that: HERE.

One thing is for sure, if it's The Black Keys - the music is going to be solid. Also wonderful? New Album will mean a new tour! Expect dates soon. We will keep our ear to the ground for any samplings. Until then, see you in December for this one!

Ryan Adams Revisited

New Music of Note
by Chris Fullerton

New Music Video: Lucky Now and a New Record: Ashes & Fire

To say Ryan Adams is a musical enigma is somewhat of an understatement. An undeniable talent, sometimes overshadowed by boorish behavior and self-indulgence, Adams has been on hiatus since leaving Lost Highway and his former band, the Cardinals, aside from his forays into black metal (Werewolph) and hard rock (Sleazy Handshake.) In the interim, he’s married former pop princess/actress Mandy Moore and claims to be living a clean life. After listening to his latest offering, Ashes & Fire, I’m inclined to believe he’s a changed man.

ASHES & FIRE - The album is a collection of mature lyrics set to subtle, yet layered arrangements, beautifully produced by the legendary Glyn Johns, who not only worked with Bob Dylan and the Who, but who also fathered Ethan Johns, the producer behind some of Adams’ most acclaimed albums. The instrumentation on A&F is sparse, mostly acoustic guitars, understated percussion and buoyed by the swirling organ and piano playing of Benmont Tench. All of this takes a back seat to the most impressive instrument, Adams’ voice, which shines on each track, pushed to the front of the mix and allowed to command some of his most poignant lyrics to date. Nothing about the performances feels forced or contrived, which for me, hasn’t always been the case on some of his later albums.

While every song is quite good, there are several standout tracks, in my opinion, including the opener, “Dirty Rain” which could be about a lover or possibly the shadowy past the singer has left behind. The lyrical patterns are reminiscent of Southern gospel, which is reinforced by Tench’s organ work, and the song becomes a hymn of redemption, the story of a man who has been baptized by the storm and rejoices in the sunshine once it has passed.

The title track “Ashes & Fire” picks up where the opener leaves off, picking up the tempo, so Adams can belt his lines out against the percussive guitar and rollicking piano. It’s the first time I’ve ever listened to one of his songs and thought he sounded joyous.

The overall tone and intent of the album can be summed up by the lead single, “Lucky Now”. Adams sings, “I don’t remember, were we wild and young? Oh that’s faded into memory. I feel like somebody I don’t know. Are we really who we used to be? Am I really who I was?” Whatever has caused this introspection, this entire album seems to be a statement of maturation and reflection.

As he states in the closing track, “I Love You, But I Don’t Know What to Say”…“I was lost. I tried to find the balance and got caught up in the cost.” It feels like Ryan’s found the balance and delivered a truly beautiful record that will rank among the best of the year.-
