Vote DAVID WAX MUSEUM to Newport Folk!

Your Chance to Make Music History!
New England Band needs your Help

The musical styling of the Wax Museum, a mixing of traditional folk and Mexo-Americana is fresh to most ears, but also clean and true to cultural traditionalists. We aren't alone in this passion: NPR waxed poetic about the band in a recent interview, comparing them to Calexico and DevotchKa amongst others.

I am drawn to the down-to-earth style and personable nature of the band (lead at its core by David Wax and Suz Slezak.) These are good people; real people, doing remarkable things.

Just 24 Hours to Help
DAVID WAX MUSEUM

David Wax Museum into the Newport Folk Festival!

MAKING HISTORY TODAY - And that brings me to the reason for today's post. I was going to go on with the illusion of being objective, but it seems we cannot. David Wax Museum is in a two-horse race tonight. The contest, sponsored by Vermont's Magic Hat Brewery and Newport Folk Festival producers will place one band in the very last artist slot at this year's Folk Festival. It's an invaluable opportunity for David Wax Museum to be heard by thousands of new fans who, I couldn't be more sure of this - will love them as they should be loved. A vote for the band tonight and tomorrow is what they need. The contest concludes tomorrow night 6/30/10. One vote per person. Two minutes of your time. A chance to help a truly worthy music act. An opportunity to shape Newport Folk Festival; to touch history. A chance to make history. Please vote.

The Middle East - 6/19/10

Boston's Bodega Girls at the Middle East
photos by Mark Jenko

Named one of SPIN magazine's 25 bands to catch at CMJ and a recent guest on public radio and even had their music featured on a HBO mainstay, Boston's Bodega Girls are ever the buzz band these days. We can confirm that that noise has basis in fact. The band's wild, theatrical live shows (characterized by dramatic costumes - and recently with a bubble machine) keep audience entertained while their beats keep hearts, feet and head moving.

the Crowning of Aaron English

Best of 2010 Selection
Someone You Need to Know:

One of the Best To Date in 2010

new release

Triumph of the Human Spirit - Seattle's Aaron English is one of the most talented piano men I have ever encountered and one of America's finest songwriters in 2010. For the past 5 years, he has been steadily building a buzz in the U.S., thanks to two self-released albums and three national tours. I listened to his music every week since I first encountered him online some 4 years ago. He is better today than ever. So why don't you already know him?

In 2008, English’s 3rd national tour - a string of dates that were to bring him to the East Coast - ended abruptly in a catastrophic road accident on a Midwestern highway. English's restaurant-grease-fueled tour bus and most of his musical equipment were destroyed. Lives were forever changed. For a time, understandably, English's heart for music - and his touring career stalled. Then last summer, English's fans rallied to his aid and funded the recording of Aaron’s third album, American (Fever) Dream. This is the story of Aaron English's triumphant return.

One of America's Finest Musicians

Aaron English hasn't had an easy road

Triumphant & Soaring, Low & Doubting, Always Reflective - these are the various pieces on Aaron English's game board. The elements of this larger than life album demonstrate English is a songwriter for the ages. The songwriter in English challenges the listener with timeless themes (surrendering to love, questioning faith, celebrating life, challenging fear) creating a realm of beauty and escape on American (Fever) Dream.

On Believe, English effortlessly weaves his humanity into both the sky above and a river of emotion at his feet. "Heaven you're a thief, why should we call you friend? / You Take all we love away. / And, we grieve and grieve again." This is absolute must-have material.

Aaron English gets some love on television's Bones

English is the only self-released artist on the Mix Tape

"Aaron English may prove to the most relevant songwriter of the year. His work on the timeless American (Fever) Dream is pure contemplative genius," Ryan Spaulding - rslblog.com

New Songs from Ranger3

New Music this Week!
Someone You Should Know

Ranger3

Ranger3 are an Anglo-Irish duo formed in 2005 in Camberwell, London. Named after the highly successful technology laden US Rocket whose mission was to land on the moon, but which actually missed the moon by 36,000 km and spiraled off into space, losing contact with the earth.

This Folk Electronica duo are equal parts: The English half, Jim Perkins, is a composer, arranger and producer who blends acoustic and electronic instruments and sounds. The Irish element, Ronan Burke has a fondness for electronica, krautrock and folk songs about romance and death.

New Songs from Murder Mystery

New Music this Week!
Someone You Should Know

Murder Mystery

Was very happy to hear from our old friends from New York this week. Murder Mystery have been performing a really awesome brand of indie pop for years now. (The kind of songs that get under your skin and end up in your feet - making you move.) With these kinds of poppy hooks, who needs the blues? Get to know these guys. They played an rslblog.com show in Boston back a couple of years ago. Who knows, maybe we can get them back in New England again soon?

John Butler Trio in Boston

Photographic Evidence
by Marc Beaulieu

Bank of America Pavilion
Boston, MA – June 18, 2010

John Butler Trio
images and review by Marc Beaulieu

The Pavilion here in Boston was the place to be last week. With the cool ocean breeze making this part of the city tolerable, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The tight, explosive set by the John Butler Trio, didn't make it easy to stay cool though. This was another explosive night on tour for the band, known for their Butler’s incredible guitar playing and the trio's tight chemistry. Their tour this year found Butler flanked by two new players: bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Nicky Bomba. They definitely held their own (read on below!)

I have to admit that I didn't know a lot about the group going into the show, but after the performance, I am certainly motivated to learn more. They put on a great show that kept me movin' and shakin' throughout their set, which takes a lot. As a musician myself, I'm keen to what goes into making the music as well as performing and these guys have both going for them. Their style shifted quite a bit over the course of their set, I imagine, drawing from several albums worth of material that they've produced. Post-show, I learned that they're huge in Australia and have won or been nominated for multiple awards as well as having and gold and platinum status for the five albums they have to their credit; I can see how they deserve these accolades!

the John Butler Trio in Boston

I loved they way John amp'ed his acoustic through a Marshall and it didn't take him long to break out a banjo and get that rockin'. Also, the band's new bassist, Byron Luiters, looked completely comfortable playing both electric and acoustic-upright basses. I also have to call him Mr. Smiley for the night as evidence in a few of the photos I captured him in. It's a great gig isn't it, Byron! He probably was reacting to the excellent crowd that evening who were really digging the band. Kudos, as well, to the awesome drumming of Nicky Bomba, who had several drum solos sprinkled through the set.

These guys are the real deal! They've been touring since late last year and it doesn't look like they stop for a while. Thanks for stopping in Boston!

Passion Pit - Meet the Band!

Free Tickets / Meet & Greet!
Royale is Ground Zero

A free Passion Pit show in Boston on Saturday
is being sponsored by new charge card ZYNC

The times they are-a-changin', Bob Dylan said that nearly 4+ decades ago and the tide is still changing - and faster than ever. Certainly true as evidenced by the completely viral success of Passion Pit, a diverse group of whip-smart guys often attributed to having a Boston start but who clearly belong to the world at this point. Having made a number of Best of Lists in 2009 (including our own) the band have remastered and re-released their debut and are now playing dates in front of their largest audiences to date.

Passion Pit plays a recent viral media event in New York

Saturday's free show in Boston is sponsored by ZYNC - a new charge card under the American Express mantle. The pop up show is nothing new but the nature of its order and magnitude in this case represents a bold, new approach by corporate America as they attempt to reach young people. According to a ZYNC card press release, cardholders can customize their ZYNC Card with a “music pack,” which gives them all kinds of music-specific rewards and benefits, such as pre-sale access to concert tickets and events, special experiences at Festivals across the country, like Coachella, and double Membership Rewards on concert tickets through vendors like Ticketmaster." That's just good marketing and knowing your audience. It also reflects the new age of consumerism. Let's hope the people from ZYNC also know how to put on a good show.

Change is indeed in the air. Passion Pit arrives in Boston again to play a date at Boston's Royale - an emerging player of a live venue that has itself reinvented itself under the management of the successful independent Bowery Group out of NYC - a group challenging the notion of single-sourcing live entertainment. By taking over a theatre more known for its over-priced drinks and, at times, stuffy crowds - a new paradigm has been set and a shot has been fired across the bow of LiveNation/Ticketmaster's near monopoly of live entertainment venues in New England. Whether this is a good thing or even a necessity, remains to be seen. It's hard not to believe that different eyes and ears making competitive waves and bringing in talent could ever be a bad thing. Let's hope this goes well for them and the entire regional live market succeeds.

First Aid Kit makes their Mark

On Further Review
by Emma Dessau

Live at the Middle East - 6/14/2010

sister act: First Aid Kit

Emma Dessau photograph

As I sat waiting for First Aid Kit (an act that Paste magazine calls the "The Best of What's Next") to take the stage at the Middle East, sipping my first legally obtained all-American beer (from a bar, at least), I noticed two girls at the table beside me. They looked young, but not just the normal kind of young I would describe the run of the mill American teenager: Something about their angelic, velvet-eyed faces struck me as foreign. The place began to fill up, as per usual, but not with the normal mix I expect from the Middle East. No, this time, floods of teenage girls poured in. Needless to say, my first beer from a Boston bar felt a lot less badass than I’d hoped.

Those two velvet-eyed girls, from earlier on would take the stage. Klara, the older of the Swedish Södenberg sisters, also known as First Aid Kit, introduced the duo. Previously I only knew of their incredible version of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song,” a cover that rivals the beauty of the original. However, Klara and Johanna Sodenberg were increasingly mesmerizing with each tune. I don’t tend to pick artists with the purest and benevolent of lyrics, but First Aid Kit delivers acoustic stylings as alluring as early Joan Baez singles.

Their show at the Middle East was the penultimate stop on their first American tour for their first full-length album, “The Big Black and the Blue.” Towards the end of the set, they left their mics and instruments behind and walked to the edge of the stage to serenade the audience unplugged. Their harmonies carried across the room and a girl in the corner broke down crying. Though truly almost too cute for my stomach to handle, I was amazed.

Today we return to the Kitchen, or the rooftop as it were, to bring you a completely unique video performance from New England's John Shade and the Neave String Quartet. Pray for Polanski

This Week in Boston:
Someone You Should Know

Pray for Polanski at O'Brien's 6/23 & 6/30

There are two Wednesday residency dates remaining this month for noted folk punk rockers Pray for Polanski at O'Briens in Allston this month. Renowned for their high-energy, archaic sets PFP have been winning over the hearts and minds of New Englanders for years now. Here's just one reason why:

With the same wild spirit that has drawn us to gypsy punk's Gogol Bordello and the whiskey-soaked Lucero (all that wild attitude minus the country twang); Pray for Polanski live in that wild, unrepentant space between. Expect lots of wild toe-tapping, soon to be followed by head thrashing and unadulterated good times.

And for just $5 the next two Wednesday nights, you can't possibly go wrong.

getting to love Sarah Blacker

This Week in Boston:
by Nick Parker
Someone You Should Know

Sarah Blacker at Toad 6/22 & 6/29

photo: Andrew Wallach

This Tuesday sees the return of folk artist Sarah Blacker for her June residency at Toad in Cambridge. Listening to tracks on her album “The Only Way Out is Through” gives you a sense that you are stealing a chance to hear someone play just for you, before she rises from local star to national act.

Blacker plays moving folk, often upbeat, always heart-warming. She hides some of the strongest songs for late points in the album, a tactic I always respect, since it rewards the more committed fan, as if you are digging into Blacker’s mind by the minute.

In the final seconds of her folk-rock track “Bad I been, ” near the end of the album, she adds a parting “That was fun!” before the mic cuts. It’s a telling moment – both the words we have felt in our own minds as the album played, and the sense she gives always of the joy she has in this music, beyond of our own reactions. “The Only Way Out is Through” is an album full of fun, perfect as the summer rises around us. Spend an evening with Blacker this Tuesday at TOAD, and smile with her.

Rock Report: PISTOL SHOT GYPSY

words & media by
Shawn SixX

What in the hell has happened to the modern day Rock Band? Have they all gone soft? (Drinking Starbuck’s lattes while hanging out at the local Urban Outfitters?) Where is the beer guzzling? The girl-chasing bands, the guitar-smashing dudes, the bar-fighting nights? The bedlam that I, personally, think of when I hear the words “Rock Band”? Where are the SEX, DRUGS and ROCK-N-Roll in local music today? Well, I found at least one band that still acts like a “REAL” rock band...

Pistol Shot Gyspy

Pistol Shot Gypsy hails from south coast Massachusetts and brings with them the gritty, dirty, angst of a New England mill town mixed with the good old crazy chaos that is what Rock and Roll is supposed to be. This past Saturday night I witnessed these guys tear a new ass in Haverhill’s JP McBrides while the local police circled the parking lot.

These guys can best be described as hard rock but they have the influences of everything from Metal to Glam. This band restored my faith in what the essence of Rock should be! Lead vocals are manipulated by Ronnie Travis who takes the crowd from 0 to 100 with a single breath ending up in a guttural growl that you would swear came straight from the depths of hell. As you gulp down your 2nd beer, the guitars of Ian Haggerty and Jeff Instasi sneak up on you, slowly drawing you in till the screaming from the stage fills your ears. The bottom end in this band is handled by James Thompson on bass and Boom Bots on drums. They come down on you like a TV being kicked out of a hotel window. But this time, you want it to happen again and again and again.

After the show, we all sat in their “Rock and Roll tour RV” swilling down beers and talking about the best plan for getting to the after party and I asked them where they were going next. “We are coming to your town and will destroy it!” is what they responded and by the headache I had the next day, I believe them! They are currently working on their second album and will be playing throughout New England. If you are looking for a great band and want to experience what rock and rock abandon is, check out Pistol Shot Gypsy. Just make sure you take the next day off!!

Peace,
SixX

All New Music Adventures
Rock and Blues on the Water:

"I'm On A Boat!" - Raised in Vermont with legs and an inner ear that have clearly been conditioned for solid ground, I don't fear the water and I love a sunset on the beach. I am still super enthusiastic for New England music lovers this summer - who will have a chance to enjoy some pretty outstanding live music encounters with impressive music acts on the open waves.

Ben Kweller plays two shows on June 26

Sawdust Man

The first of these that my friends will find me at will be the Saturday, June 26th installment with the incredible Ben Kweller (who was amazing at last year's Newport Folk Festival - photos here) and New England's most impressive new act David Wax Museum (an RSL Best of 2009 selection) and a prime candidate to be on the stage of this year's Newport Festival! (Just one spot remaining - these guys could use your vote. You have to register, but it's no big thing.) As for the live entertainment. I am also very interested in seeing our friends Will Dailey (our interview!) with Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents on August 6th. Possibly the best in the series still, could be Carbon Leaf (another RSL Best of 2009 pick) on August 19th. But that's the thing - there are just so many good shows happening out on the water this year - something for everybody!

The Paradise Boston, MA - 6/11/10

Appearing on a Boston stage for the first time, it was the moment for England indie power-folk hot shots Peggy Sue to shine at the Paradise. They couldn't have asked for a better bill - appearing with heated-up Boston legends Buffalo Tom. The audiences for Tom Janovitz's band paid close attention to the UK trio on stage - offering up early smatterings of applause.

By the time the three finished up, Peggy Sue had earned a rousing standing ovation from the packed crowd. That's what they mean when they say winning over an audience! The band are touring the states these days behind the release of their June 2010 new release: "Fossils and Other Phantoms" (Yep Roc) - it's a staggeringly good listen for such a young act. We recommend you listen (full album stream + music video.)

Wintersleep sounds better than they have in years!

A Phenomenal Night of Music - On the road these days with fan favorites Matt Pond PA, the stellar Wintersleep played before a packed house at Great Scott in Boston about a week back. My expectations for these northern artisans has always been quite high. Their sound can shift instantly from ethereal and mystical and pounding, rhythmic and raging. Let me tell you - and having seen them several times now - they sound as good or better now than they ever have before!

Wintersleep have a brand new album titled, New Inheritors. We recommend you buy it from Newbury Comics as they offer an online sale on the cheap that will land you a CD booklet autographed by the band! Now that's a sweet deal.

The First Episode saw Vader take on a new apprentice

SURPASSING FILMS - As you might expect, I don't have a hell of a lot of time to play games on top of writing and editing this website and working my 9-5. But I have played The Force Unleashed a handful of times. (I don't even own a console.) And while I stink miserably, some of the sting comes out of the incredible graphics - and great story. Well, here's the trailer for part two of the game. And, it looks unbelievable - like better than most of the crappy movie previews we get shoved down our throats every time you turn on the tv.

The events here in the game unfold in the space between Star Wars III and IV - so this thing works for you sticklers, as well.

The trailer was released yesterday. Watch and be amazed. I'm probably going to sink some cash into an X-Box 360 soon. Yeah, yeah... I know. It's 2010... But I have managed to avoid owning an ipod and this little kick ass website seems to be doing just fine.

Buffalo Tom - Last Night in Boston

The Paradise Boston, MA - 6/11/10

Bill Janovitz raged for a sold out audience last night

LAST NIGHT - Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz howled in celebration - raising his guitar aloft in front of a sold out audience last night at the Paradise. It was the same powerful, charismatic performance that has historically set the band apart - and they pulled it off so well, this one will be talked about for a very long time.

The late-80s, early-90s rock heroes not only proved last night that they are perhaps the best Boston band ever... But they showed that there are many, many gallons left in the tank. The timing couldn't be better as Buffalo Tom are finishing up their new album.

The light played down beautifully (well done last night night, btw. kudos to the house) illuminating talent, skill and vitality up on stage. Clearly, Janovitz on guitar, Chris Colbourn on bass, and Tom Maginnis (drums) are in top form.

"Larry" from Let Me Come Over (1992)

It was impossible not to see the college kids with baseball caps standing alongside with the older professionals, their hair thinning - their smiles, wide.

Each moment of last night's show (read: every single note), was a testament to Buffalo Tom's longevity. And their sound still demands to be heard - This is your warning. This new record, their eighth studio album, is going to be very good!

The crowd would all too soon spill back out onto the street, wide-eyed and full of vitality. They were all amazed and happy, both the young - and the 'more experienced.' Many of them were talking about Buffalo Tom's surprise cover of New Order's, "Age of Consent." Said one, who could not have possibly been old enough to be at ground zero of Buffalo Tom's first run,... "Wow. That was awesome!" Yes. Yes, it was.

Brooklyn's Fan-Tan

One to Watch 2010
RSL recommends...

Perhaps we are on our own in this wide, sea of new music... Riding the crest of what's new and getting popular, RSL has still been resistant - for the most part - to the cult of popularity rained down on the heads of Brooklyn bands. That doesn't mean, however, that we're immune when the time is right.

Fan-Tan
, the subject of today's celebration, actually formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina - but they now very much reside in Brooklyn. And that's where this story unfolds. Kuki and Sandee Kooks (two Indonesian expatriates) joined forces with Ryan Lee Dunlap and Mike Walter to form a really interesting sound. (Think Manchester, UK underground circa early 1980s, with Eastern music - and all the pacing that goes along with it.)

The band-on-the-rise are all about movement of energy. Countering that and courting that approach, Walter's synthesizer creates really large, hollow emotional feel that stirs this drink. The band's new EP, The Age of Discovery, marks a real time of personal and group discovery that I am happy to listen to time and again. I urge you to pick up the album and get ready for more.
