Blackberry Image of the Week - Flaming Lips / Boston

I didn't sleep well at all last night. What, with the excitement of seeing both Explosions in the Sky (a personal favorite) and a stimulus-overload show from The Flaming Lips, I practically couldn't hold my eyes shut! While in some ways, EITS played the better set, the most profound moments (awe) came from Wayne Coyne and The Lips.

Case in point was the dramatic conclusion of the show. The Flaming Lips had already played an epic version of "The W.A.N.D." for the Boston crowd and then had satisfied the rest with "Vaseline." Wayne and the band returned for a gorgeous, fan-pleasing version of "Do You Realize..?" And in the midst of the fanfare and debris, I captured this shot (one of only eight I took with the Blackberry all night.)

Coyne at center, thrusts his fist into the air and the backstage and LED tubes projected his determined, manic features out into the night. It's not a great shot, but what it does do is lock a moment in time.

The Lips dedicated last night's show to Senator Ted Kennedy.
It was Explosions in The Sky's last night on the tour.

Counting Crows return to Boston

GOING OUT BOSTON: TONIGHT
The Scene: Bank of America Pavilion

Less than a day after Explosions in the Sky devastated audiences here and The Flaming Lips made it a party (complete with light effects, streamers, balloons and confetti), the Bank of America Pavilion will play to Adam Duritz & Counting Crows in Boston tonight. It's been a year since the band's Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings double-album emerged and the band find themselves working in front of even larger audiences.

EITS at La Guinguette Pirate Paris 2002

To Celebrate Explosions in the Sky and the Flaming Lips' arrival in town for tonight's show at the Pavilion, I thought I might throw on some cerebral candy from one of the Austin's band's 2002 dates in Paris. EITS are a silly talented group making some of the most amazing instrumental music these days. It's time you took a break. Start the first track and let them all play. The sounds will wash over you like the tide...

Live - September 22, 2002

BONUS TRACK:

Explosions in the Sky released the Double-Length LP All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone in the spring of 2007. (RSL Top 40 Album of 2007.) The album is immense and powerful - capturing in clarity, EITS' amazing exploration of space. I think I learned as much about myself while listening to it as I did about the band's ability to open people's minds.

Here is today's stunning bonus track:

Boston's ONE NIGHT BAND is Tonight

GOING OUT BOSTON: TONIGHT!
Saturday, August 29th - The Middle East
EIGHT "All-Star" BANDS - Just $12

THIS GREAT ADVENTURE - It's really hard to understate how large of an undertaking tonight's event is for the participants. One Night Band has called on 40 Boston rockers from various notable area bands who will be randomly coupled up today (each group gets a drummer and a bassist - but beyond that, it's anybody's guess.)

Their Work Cut Out For Them - It's the Rock Lottery Concept: So the bands, who have not yet met, will be asked to come back on stage tonight (after only a few hours of bonding, songwriting and jamming) and be asked to perform 4 songs on stage tonight at the Middle East. (Each set will be approximately 20-30 minute set tonight.) That 4-song set will consist of 3 originals from that new band and 1 cover song. (Getting 4 people to agree on which cover song - and then to learn it, is probably the most difficult part of the endeavor!)

From Music back into Music - Exciting as this prospect already is, we are happy to relay that this is also a charity event we can get behind - all proceeds of the night will go to Zumix, a youth music education center located in East Boston.

WHO'S INVOLVED? - This grand event is hosted by Boston Band Crush and has involved months of planning. We take our hats off to anyone who can gather (and convince) this kind of talent to take part in this truly exciting, challenging, and fun show. Hats off and our appreciation!

The Artists of One Night Band - Abe Lateiner, Ad Frank, Adam Ritchie, Andy Santospago, Ben Weiser, Bo Barringer, Brendan Boogie, C.D. Dylan's 47th Album will be a Christmas Record - 100% of Proceeds go to Charity

BOB DYLAN SINGS CHRISTMAS - I've made no secret in the past that I am lifelong Dylan fan and I haven't written a word about him as of late, which is why today's news is really wonderful. I'm the type who shuns Christmas as a whole - and find, for the most part, the music from that season to be utterly dreadful. (Longtime readers know this isn't completely true as a number of old X-Mas classics have won a place in my heart.... but not many tracks in light of just how many artists have released Christmas Classics.) Well now even I have something to look forward to...

Dylan's 46th record is one of our favorites to date!

CHARITY BEGINS WITH BOB - Dylan will release a brand new album of holiday songs, Christmas In The Heart, on Tuesday, October 13, on the Columbia Records label. All of the artist’s U.S. royalties from sales of these recordings will be donated to Feeding America, guaranteeing that more than four million meals will be provided to more than 1.4 million people in need in this country during this year’s holiday season. Bob Dylan is also donating all of his future U.S. royalties from this album to Feeding America in perpetuity.

Additionally, the artist is partnering with two international charities to provide meals during the holidays for millions in need in the United Kingdom and the developing world, and will be donating all of his future international royalties from Christmas In The Heart to those organizations in perpetuity. (Yes, he is signing over all rights as well. Considering how well Dylan's albums sell, this is no small change!) Details regarding the international partnerships will be announced next week.

“When we reached out to Bob Dylan about becoming involved with our organization, we could never have anticipated that he would so generously donate all royalties from his forthcoming album to our cause,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. “This major initiative from such a world renowned artist and cultural icon will directly benefit so many people and have a major impact on spreading awareness of the epidemic of hunger in this country and around the world.”

Bob Dylan commented, “It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone -- 12 million of those children – often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from. I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season.”

Christmas In The Heart will be the 47th album from Bob Dylan, and follows his worldwide chart-topping Together Through Life, released earlier this year. Songs performed by Dylan on this new album include, “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “Must Be Santa.”

Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief charity, our network members supply food to more than 25 million Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks supports 63,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms. For more information how you can fight hunger in your community and across the country, visit feedingamerica.org.

Who knows, maybe even this album will put me in the Christmas spirit!

We were perusing Vimeo when we found this odd, fun little music video put together by the talented folks at Neurosonics - and we just had to share. While music-related, the technology used to bring together all of the elements is pretty incredible. Oh yeah, and then there's the heads that actually play the notes... Can't forget about them!

4 Ways to Be Entertained

GOING OUT BOSTON: TONIGHT!
Thursday, August 27th - The Middle East
18+ Just $10 - One Big Lineup!

In what could prove to be one of the most entertaining lineups of the late summer here in the city unfolds tonight at the Middle East. (I actually have no idea as to set order. Show up early tonight to see all the acts - Doors are 8pm, Music starts at 9pm.)

First and foremost this is a CD release party of epic proportions. Golden Bloom is releasing one of the best albums of 2009 tonight. "Fan the Flames" (RSL BEST OF 2009 pick) is intelligent rock with pop leanings, drawing crowds of kids who want to feel good about themselves AND their music. [Ed.'s Note: We unleashed a new track from the album and interviewed Golden Bloom front man Shawn Fogel - who has his own performance career - recently. Here's the Q&A with a new mp3 to download and enjoy!]

Also on the bill tonight are Boston standouts Gene Dante and the Future Starlets, who have proven themselves time-and-again to be one of the most exciting live acts on the East Coast this year. We haven't had the opportunity to see Gene and the band play since the 2009 Rock 'n Roll Rumble (RIP Rumble sponsor 104.1fm WBCN) so we will definitely be looking forward to their performance tonight!

A Party's just not a Party without The Lights Out. Living rock legends here in the Boston scene, this fearsome foursome put on one of the best live shows we have ever seen (about six times over the last year now - as we have sought them out. And with good reason: They Rock.)

From talking to the guys I know The Lights Out have been in the studio and writing new material. We are kind of excited for them and would love to see what comes next.

Tonight also marks a very high-profile musical debut for a local super act called The Future Everybody. There's been a lot of chatter about them, largely since most folks in the scene are either in bands with these folks or they are close friends. (Us included - we know these guys and expect great things.) That being said - we will reserve the full RSL seal of approval until after the show unfolds but as far as debuts go, this one's pretty damn exciting!

The Donnas were kickin' at the Pavilion

WOMEN WHO ROCK - Formed in 1993 at Palo Alto junior high school in Northern California, The Donnas were four self-described “dorky pre-teen girls.” They were just 13. Drawing inspiration from The Ramones, AC/DC and Kiss, 16 years later they have released seven critically-acclaimed albums, graced stages at Saturday Night Live and many other late night TV shows, and toured around the world. The Donnas played the Pavilion here in Boston recently to support their brand new release, "The Donnas Greatest Hits, Vol. 16" - it's a hits collection features two brand new songs, two never-before-heard b-sides, live recordings and re-recorded versions of old favorites.

Static of the Gods - Leaked Song from the New Album!

One of the Best Bands on the East Coast of the US, Boston's Static of the Gods will release their highly-anticipated sophomore album, The Knowledge Machine, this Winter. While the material on their first album is solid (certainly remarkable enough to draw us in and hold us as fans), these originals are eclipsed on the new songs. And if this band's stage prowess and live sound are any indication, this new Static of the Gods album will be a must-have.

Never-Before-Heard:

Alicia Rose photo

Static of the Gods have survived the many challenges that face upstart bands - and have come out the other side far better than they were before. (The East Coast's version of LA's Great Northern? - Another very good band that has come back unstoppable.)

Recording: Static have joined a growing trend that has found bands such as the Fleet Foxes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs recording in non-traditional environments outside the studio. Inn the case of Static, the recording came in Vermont. [Editor's Note: In case you forgot, all good things come from VT.] For the moment, the long wait is over. Enjoy the new track, Boston should head over to their live show (tickets) this week.

Wednesday Night - RSL Presents...

LIVE at THE MIDDLE EAST

layout & design by Tom Gallo

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - A Ryan's Smashing Life live show delivers remarkable music talent, straight from our digital pages to the finest stages in New England. This tradition of music exploration continues on Wednesday, August 26th at the Middle East with four outstanding acts that promise to thoroughly entertain, reigniting your passion for exciting new music!

Larcenist

RSL is proud to champion the Larcenist CD release at the Middle East. Audiences in Boston already know how good the band can be and things are just getting better. Larcenist began as a four piece (Guitarist Brandon Mastrangelo, Jonathan Tompkins- drums, bassist Steve Terry and Jonathan Schoeck- keys) under the name Vessel. Things changed up when they added guitarist Jeff Rowe (Tomorrow the Gallows, Boxingwater). There was good chemistry and things really just took off.

The sound of each member shines through on their eponymous new album. That's because this band has 5 singers and input on songwriting is a shared duty. With influences ranging from classic rock to country, and soul to punk, they write to make the music of each song define its messages. With all this in mind, here's the premiere of, "Home" the first single from the new album. Show up on the 26th to pickup a copy and see for yourself what the excitement's about!

Static of the Gods

Boston's own -Static of the Gods tends a hothouse full of luminous, melody-infused indie rock songs with sweet vocals soaring over a seething rhythm section and expansive, reverb-drenched guitars. Preparing for the release of their sophomore record, The Knowledge Machine, on November 10, 2009, the band now joins a growing trend that has found bands such as the Fleet Foxes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs recording in non-traditional environments outside the studio.

Named “Boston’s hottest rising band” by Skope Magazine, SOTG released their well-received debut, Cycles Follow Signs, through recorded in April 2007, where it debuted at #141 on CMJ Charts, peaking at #103 with 5 weeks in the Top 200. Having toured the country in 2008, the band released the Obama Inauguration EP in January and we are very much looking forward to the new album in November. Here's a track from the record...

Ryan's Smashing Life: "This most-promising band have a special something - a talent level, their tight play, an enigmatic charm - that lends me to believe they will be the next Boston band to make a mark on the national level."

NE Performer
: "Orbiting in perfect equilibrium between guilty pleasure pop music and cool underground purist fringe rock, Static of the Gods holds a future that looks promising ..."

The Shondes

The Shondes (taking their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace") are a band from Brooklyn, NY whose dramatic brand of rock music has been compared to Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith and The Raincoats. Their instrumentation includes drums (Temim Fruchter), bass (Louisa Solomon), guitar (Fureigh) and violin (Elijah Oberman) and vocals (primarily Solomon).

The Shondes are known for their melodic rock sound and a live show that explodes with energy. Their debut album, The Red Sea, produced by Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, They Might Be Giants) was released to much acclaim last year. It has been too long since this band has been in Boston, so we booked them to entertain you for this show. How awesome is that?!

Ian Adams

How often do you think it is that a music blogger or a promoter actually gets to book an artist who released one of the best albums of the year? [Here's our hardcore best of list from early '09] On the list you will find Adams' Stay Up Late (review) - a wonderful collection of love and murder ballads awash with some pretty amazing sonic landscaping.

Boston - if you don't know Ian Adams (formerly of Rock City Crimewave) or are unfamiliar with this new material - you need to see these songs performed live. Hopefully Mr. Adams brings some copies of the record for you to pick up as well. Seriously, we are just ecstatic to have Ian Adams on this bill!

Mew - No More Stories are Told Today

Going Out Boston
Mew with Mean Creek

Tonight - 8/22 @ The Paradise in Boston

Greatest Danes - Mew

MEW TONIGHT - Arriving in Boston today, a mere handful of days before the debut of their new album, Danish band Mew will play the Paradise Rock Club tonight. Mew's new album (and it's a mouthful) is "No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away" - The record (while just as experimental, is more upbeat than its predecessors) and will be in US stores on Tuesday. Mew appears in Boston tonight and in New York in two days before joining NIN on tour!

POWER PACK - Local support for Mew is Mean Creek, a group whose new record, "Sky (Or the Underground)" we we just waxed all poetic about (it's really damn good - one of our new favorites of 2009). If you are free tonight (pretty much every club and venue in town have quality choices tonight) you may want to consider this 1-2 lineup.

Langhorne Slim at TT the Bears

On Further Review / Photographic Evidence
by Ryan Spaulding and Emma Dessau

TT the Bears in Cambridge - 8/3/2009

Images in this Collection by Emma Dessau

Langhorne Slim is definitely one of the most charismatic artists on tour in 2009. Having seen him now a handful of times (each magic and full of tumbling energy), all I can say is this is a show your music-loving ears cannot afford to miss. Most notable of these shows I have partaken in were the stellar, legendary night a year ago at Cambridge's TT the Bears in which Langhorne Slim was paired with Heartless Bastards and Those Darlins. That set edges Langhorne's Newport Folk Festival set from this year (he opened the Water Stage at Newport, RI's Fort Adams this year.) We didn't catch the whole thing - but what we did see was vintage Langhorne.

"Oh my god," someone outside the tent at Newport that day said, turning to me ... from within, The War Eagles were picking up the pace with "Restless" and the Crowd responded by bouncing along. "Who is this guy? He's really, really good." I responded only; "That's Langhorne. And yeah, he is."

Langhorne appeared in town the Monday following the Newport Festival. Often hiding in the shadow of his trademark hat, Langhorne was just beaming - smiling widely. He stood with a small group outside TT the Bears in Cambridge early on, greeting folks as they entered. This bit of goodwill wasn't part of the show - I think all those smiling souls who attended this stirring, Monday night would agree to that... - but it could as just as well have been.

When it was time to take the stage, Langhorne fired off a quick hello and immediately fixated on his guitar. His backing band, The War Eagles, enthusiastically fill in the rolling hillside behind him - as if he were walking a country road on a sunny day. This is one of the more common backdrops for Langhorne's stories. Suddenly I came to the realization that the club had gone from near empty to half-full. Lyrics were being cast out by the audience - - this was a large, dedicated Langhorne Slim crowd and it was going to be a special night!

ONE TO REMEMBER - From the moment Langhorne and the band launched in "Hello Sunshine," the crowd was a major factor in this performance. (Unlike many shows in which there is a cold, atmospheric distance between the performers and the audience - there was none tonight. In fact, the ever amiable Langhorne chats up the crowd throughout and smiles widely at the sight of so many folks synced up to his music.

The high point of the show for me was a raucous version of Langhorne's "She's Gone," which played a lot like it was intended. It's an emotive, explosive track - the storyteller has lost again. The music was rambling, raw and at that moment, just so perfect.

There wasn't a soul within those four walls that wasn't leaning towards the stage. "Boston, Boston!" Langhorne looked at his bandmates. And with a happy shrug and a wide smile, he finished his thought; "Why aren't you at all the shows?"

Barstool Sports to bring The Polyphonic Spree to Boston

SHOW HYPE: September Rumor Mill
Barstool Sports Presents...

Symphonic Rock at The Paradise in Boston

BOSTON'S BARSTOOL SPORTS are apparently partnering up with Southern Comfort to bring modern stage legends The Polyphonic Spree to Boston on Thursday, September 17th. The venue of the show is the Paradise, but the show is not yet listed on their website!

A FREE SHOW? -
According to Barstool Sports, tickets will be "basically free." (FYI pre-Registration is sometimes required at these events. And I can guarantee you right now it will be a 21+ show.) Doors will open early - at 7pm on the 17th and DJ Lord from Public Enemy will warm up the crowd! We look forward to confirmation on this one!

Anyone at Live Nation or Southern Comfort care to comment?

So you get the idea - it takes a real big stage to hold this band. But the symphonic supergroup doesn't stop there. Polyphonic Spree has it's own Choir: Kristin Hardin, Jessica Jordan, Jennie Kelley, Elizabeth Brown, Apotsala Wilson, and Jenny Kirtland. And as you can imagine a group of this size full of skilled musicians and talented singers creates an aural landscape you can get lost in.

Destroyer at the Paradise Boston

On Further Review &
Photographic Evidence

by Emma Dessau

The Paradise in Boston - 7/31/2009

Destroyer photos by Emma Dessau

As an intensely loyal fan of The New Pornographers, I have delved into the solo careers of each tremendously talented part of what is, in my opinion, the super-est of all the super groups. TNP frontman A.C. Newman released "Get Guilty" this past January. Neko Case is blowing up this year with "Middle Cyclone," and has been touring almost non-stop. While both artists bring joy to my heart, there is just something about Dan Bejar, creator and oftentimes sole member of Destroyer, that I just can't get enough of.

DESTROYER IN BOSTON - Bejar brought his one man act to the Paradise Rock Club in late July. It was just him, his black curly 'fro, some flannel and a shiny red guitar mesmerizing the crowd with lyrics that continuously catch me off guard: Bejar has mastered the art of simple yet staggering wordplay. His set included songs from Destroyer's newest album, "Trouble in Dreams," and stretched back as far as his first album, 1996's "We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge," from which he played "Streets of Fire." I will restrain myself from going down the never-ending road of incredible song lyrics in Destroyer's catalogue, but I have been known to skip down the street singing, "Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet fire in the street, let's sully every stage." We will leave it at that.

LIKENED TO - Dan Bejar and Destroyer have been compared to David Bowie, primarily because of their vocal stylings. However, Bejar has a definitive Dylan-esque way with words. Each time I listen to Destroyer, I find a new gem. Keep up the good work, Mr. Bejar. I salute you.

Justice of the Unicorns - The Dragon's Claw music video

VERY COOL - We interrupt the dead calm of a scalding hot Boston night to share something ridiculously cool from one of my favorite underground rock bands. New York's Justice of the Unicorns are a wild, untamed stallion roaming the painted hills of your dreams... Fun, twisted but in the groove they are completely indie and exactly the right band for a hot summer night. Robert Bruce flash animation video won the 2009 Animation Block Party Best "Music Video" Award for this effort....!

The Dragon's Claw by Justice of the Unicorns
directed by Robert Bruce

The story of my fandom and ultimate friendship with this band begins back in January of last year when I got a copy of JOTU's debut album, Angels with Uzis. I was won over quickly and completely half-way through. Story tellers who paint an emotive landscape, JOTU's deconstructed, lo-fi progressions and simple country-leanings are winners. Each song get enthusiastically, chopped up on stage and served hot with a side of tall tales and colorful lies.

After listening to Angels with Uzis a dozen times, I went on to write one of our most glowing reviews of the year in February of last year. Later in 2008 I brought Justice of the Unicorns to play a show in town at the Middle East. Everyone in the audience was equal parts rocked and astounded.

Division Day's Freaky Deaky Music Video for Surrender

DIVISION DAY - With Division Day’s sophomore full-length album, Visitation, being released - we just got our hands on this amazing fan-made, band-endorsed music video for the album track, “Surrender”. This one features some really freakish footage lifted from the ‘60s Japanese horror film, "Hausu." (Seriously, what is it with the Japanese and Italians with their freaky-deaky horror flicks??)

"Surrender" Appears on the Visitation album (Dangerbird Records) which some are calling the band's best original material to date; offering up a more full and darker sound. Stationed out of Los Angeles, Division Day have made a name for themselves in the West Coast scene - but have made inroads with new listeners across the country with their highly-recommended Bear Trap Island debut.

Along the way they did some momentum by deciding to cover some of their favorite pop songs along the way, mixing those songs into their original playlists on the road. We approve!

RECOMMENDED: Download a cover of Division Day covering Sponge's "Plowed" (and a bunch of other RSL-approved cover songs) in this week's Serious Covers Post.
