A musical tribute to the life of Evel Knievel - American Legend

BREAKING NEWS: Evel Knievel is dead at 69 years old.... Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. (October 17, 1938 – November 30, 2007) was an American motorcycle daredevil, a well-known figure in the United States and elsewhere since the late 1960s, and arguably the most iconic motorbike stuntman of all time. Knievel's nationally televised motorcycle jumps, including his 1974 attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, Idaho, represent four of the top 20 most-watched ABC's Wide World of Sports events of all time. He enjoyed a lengthy career in this extreme sport despite suffering a series of major injuries during stunts.... (Wikipedia)

Knievel performed stunts and lived hard.
Once, left in a coma for 29 days after a televised accident,
He would break more than 50 bones during his professional career.

Band of Horses Winter Tour dates - Tickets on sale today!

Band of Horses are an exceptional zeitgeist band on the rise. These indie rockers haven't found their way inside the Boston city limits despite having played roadhouses throughout the Midwest. (Regionally, the band played Northampton, MA and Mansfield, MA over the last year. I saw them at the latter - they were great...) Boston, a rough and tumble city we have all come to know and love, was beginning to develop a bit of a complex... So it is with great pleasure I announce the new "Cease to Begin" album tour and with it, a Boston appearance. There will be live shows in other cities, too.

Ben Bridwell & Band of Horses have a new tour.
Tickets go on sale for most dates today at noon.

DeVotchKa joins Neko Case, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Elliott Smith

One of the ten hottest acts of 2006 was DeVotchKa - the band that brought the noise on the "Little Miss Sunshine" soundtrack. With singer Nick Urata and their own remarkable string section, the beautiful noise of DeVotchKa was turning heads. The latest news from the band (a personal favorite for their soulful songs and exquisite precision) is their addition to the Anti-Records label... a move that puts them in with some very talented company.

DeVotchka is now in the Anti-Records stable

Singer Nick Urata - a voice like a fine instrument

That's some good company. Congratulations Anti-Records!
Best of luck to DeVotchKa. Keep making great music.

Ween's Funky Rock Stanks Up Boston

I embark on a new musical journey tonight. I leave the norm and jump on the fantasy ship - the U.S.S. Ween - it should be quite a ride! Never having attended a Ween show and not being very familiar with their music - I nevertheless accepted an offer from a friend to attend an evening of unique creativity and musical madness at the Orpheum!

Ween rolls into Boston tonight!

Tonight in Cambridge - Three Act Acoustic Night!

- TONIGHT -

The RSL brings you another great line-up - come out tonight!

Eldridge Rodriguez (aka E.R.) is an exceptional and most unique artist – hailing from right here in the city. ER is the singer for Midriff Recording Artists The Beatings and currently also pursuing a healthy solo career. 2007 saw the release of ER’s incredible solo debut with “This Conspiracy Against Us.” Just weeks ago, Rodriguez released “... And the Thunder Chief” - a remarkable EP album which serves as a bookend to a year in which his music played loudly here in Boston. It’s hard not to say good things about ER. Not only is Rodriguez terribly talented and dedicated to his art, he is also supportive of neighboring artists in the Boston music scene.

Eldridge Rodriguez - in his first acoustic-only performance of 2007!

Rodriguez’s very special acoustic performance during this evening will be the first time his new songs will be publicly given the un-plugged treatment!

E.R. was selected as an RSL Top Ten for 2007 - Very pleased to have him play for us!

Album Review (the new EP) - Pick this one up!

Tom Thumb
is an exceptional Boston singer-songwriter with an impressive pedigree. When living in New York, Tom recorded his debut album, “Songs From Holiday.” He played solo for sometime – grinding out his way and he learned the trade. He would return back to New England and formed a band; “The Latter Day Saints” here in Boston. Together, the band released “Kindermusik” – an EP release and Tom would go on to play shows with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Jens Lekman. Stepping out on his own, Tom recently toured the country. He has returned home and close to releasing a new album.

Tom Thumb - Brilliant and Bostonian

Tom Thumb is remarkable in his adaptability. He can sing, magically, at a whisper or develop his voice into a howl. A true performer - the sound could be ragged and beaten, or strong and triumphant. This is one show that should not be missed!

Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers are a Boston acoustic alternative folk group comprised of artists from a variety of musical backgrounds. Annie Lynch sounds like an angel with a broken heart. Honest and Beautiful, Lynch’s lyrics are married to the music. Together with the Beekeepers – she treats the audience to rich, full stories spelled out in sound. Influences range from modern classicism (think Andrew Bird and the music of Zach Condon’s Beirut) to modern folk (Gillian Welch and David Rawlings) to Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

The remarkable Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers

Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers have been busy exposing listeners from Nashville to New England with a majestic promise of better days. After just a few moments, you may find yourself growing butterfly wings. Annie has a beautiful, beautiful voice!

This is the fifth glorious year for indie music label Paper Bag Records. Founded in 2002 by Enrique Soissa and Trevor Larocque and based out of Toronto, the group is celebrating their fifth year of bringing the world great new music.

Belle and Sebastian in Washington D.C. - March 2006

Another Resurrected Show!!!
A Favorite Band - Live in the USA
BELLE and SEBASTIAN

Belle & Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in January 1996. After releasing a number of albums and EPs on Jeepster Records, they are now signed to Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom and Matador Records in the United States.

While their early sound was commonly filed under "twee pop", a description the band have rejected, Belle & Sebastian have much in common with influential indie bands such as The Smiths and Felt, and also take in other influences, such as northern soul and funk, as well as a sense of irony and humour, that are not usually associated with twee. Audiogalaxy classified Belle & Sebastian music as chamber pop, as they used instruments not very common in pop such as flute, cello or trumpet. (With thanks to Wikipedia.)

Two Songs of the Day - Band of Horses and Id Guinness

I just got back from my holiday excursion - seeing family over gravy.... A little run down at the moment - I am going to let you listen, unwind with me and listen to some utterly stellar music. For those unfamiliar with the le blog format here on RSL: I run a top 40 albums of the year list. (Here is the list from 2006 - shhhhh!)

Thirty of those magical 2007 albums were shared with you just recently. The two songs of the day today are from artists who will be making the cut and will appear in the top 40 which will run in two weeks. If you think of it, my list is the ultimate buyers guide for the indie rock fanatic on your shopping list - even if that little maniac is you! The first of the two songs is by Band of Horses - a group who you may have read about and listened to numerous times, most recently back on November 7th as I let the cat out of the bag that their magical "Cease to Begin" is pretty much a must have.... No, not a fortune teller. I just have good ears. The song I have included here by BOH is "The End's Not Here."

The Next song is an another winner from Vancouver's Id Guinness. Id just released his debut LP and it's already won my vote for Underground Album of the Year and it clearly will make my top 40 records released in '07 list.

Singing A New Song - Id Guinness

I just wrote about Id, but without the benefit of a dedicated media machine - he definitely could use the mentions. Promoting fine music from artists like Id Guinness is why mp3 blogs were created. Please enjoy his track, "Down to This." And please follow-up by listening to his album. It's incredible music!

Without further ado.... Your two songs of the day:

"Cure for the Common Crush" - Underground Album of the Year

Long-time readers of this blog will recall that I introduced you all to Id Guinness way back in August of last year. During a night of insomnia and some intense web-surfing I found his songs. While I won't say it was fate - it was certainly a happy accident. The man makes great music!

The Vancouver artist has been working slavishly on the album he just now releases. Id Guinness releases a treasure in "Cure for the Common Crush" - an amazing and most original release which could prove to be Canada's underground album release of the year! (It's got my vote.)

We are very lucky that I count Id Guinness as a friend; it has allowed me an unprecedented level of access to his songs - two of which I share with you today! Id and I stayed in touch as he worked slavishly over this new album. Over the weeks he has provided me with early samples of his work. I was always impressed with his progress, but nothing could prepare me for just how profoundly good the new record album ("Cure for the Common Crush") is overall - the package is greater than its individual parts. It's hard to believe this is a first entry into what could be a very incredible career. Listen for yourself and pickup this album.

Scalding Hot - Montreal's latest is HOT SPRINGS

I was most happy on a recent road trip (armed with a half-dozen sealed CDs) when I discovered a new favorite from Montreal. Hot Springs is a four piece band with some hot hooks and a great singer in Giselle Webber. The band just released their Volcano album in '07 and are making some seriously fun waves - check out these tracks and put this band on your radar! The Volcano album is definitely worth owning. Tom Waits - the Slow Melancholy Blues (scratch modern classics)

The scratchy voice, the unusual song arrangements - the storytelling... All elements tamed into a vision of musical abstraction by Tom Waits. But do you know Waits' melancholy blues? "Alice" and "Blood Money" are sister albums published simultaneously by Waits in 2002. Besides being brilliant and daring, the albums marked a very important turning point in the artist's career. Slowing it down and embracing the blues, Tom Waits proved he can bring it to a new level. If you like Tom Waits or just wanted to know something about the music career of this enigmatic artist - check these songs out!

That was then: Tom Waits -
Being Young and Brash was Charming

In 2002, the singer slowed and crafted beautiful songs

Waits used Alice and Blood Money as vehicles to express his frustration, disappointment and cynicism of the modern times. The songs of Alice had actually first appeared in earlier highly undeveloped versions on something called "the Alice Demos." Despite my best efforts, I do not have a high quality version of these, but the songs on Alice prove to be a fine example of how great Waits was during this period.

Blood Money is a collection of songs written for and influenced by the critical German theater. Waits wrote a handful of songs to be used in the play Woyzeck by playwright and author Karl Georg Büchner. The play Woyzeck focuses on poverty and the subjugation of the working and poor underclass. The protagonist is the everyman (Woyzeck) who is mentally tortured and is forced through pressures to commit crimes. (Interestingly, the song "All the World is Green" is not a celebration of nature - it's a criticism of the way money can ruin humanity. All you need is a little whiskey and this song to help you understand Woyzeck's position) The beautiful tracks Waits wrote for this album have a dark, slow heartbeat.

While Alice and Blood Money were separate projects and intended that way - it is impossible not to hear how one impacted the other during this remarkable period of creativity in Wait's career. The 2002 sister albums are a must have. Listening to these records from 2002 is like being inside a stranger's secret. Kind of like living for a time in an epiphany. Melancholy blues never sounded so damn good.

Rocket Science - The Forms (Brooklyn) release a winner

A favorite hobby: Getting lost between the notes of great new music. But locating new quality artists and exploring exceptional new songs can be tough. (Especially when there is just so much mediocre noise on the airwaves and playing in the malls.)

I listen to a great deal of new artists and unfortunately, due to time restrictions, find I am still am not able to share enough quality new projects like "The Forms" with you. The Forms are fresh, but they are not a new band (this is their second full length album - and their first in four years, but it has the feel of a fresh start and a good one at that!)

Kooks, Wontcha Kindly Play Boston?

For the uninitiated - The Kooks are just one of the most talented modern punk-influenced rock bands in the world. Hailing from Brighton, England - they just sold a million albums this year and are set to release a new record in the spring. (Already in the can, from what I am hearing.) A very small tour has been announced through the states. At this time, Boston is not counted among these cities. (Come on!) If you like the Strokes, the Hives, Jet and the Rolling Stones - you should give this band a serious look. While you do that, I will go back to my letter-writing campaign. Kooks, come on and play Boston! You know you want to.

Ryan's Smashing Life Presents - A Secret Show!

Ryan's Smashing Life presents..
TO BE ANNOUNCED VERY SOON

The Willowz in Cambridge

Quotation: “I just wish I could be in two places at once...” Rick LeBeau.

So I missed it. One of my favorite bands playing the States these days on Wednesday night to see another. Fate, you are one mean customer! Next week I will probably be searching for something to do... Alas, I missed you Willowz (top ten record of 2007) live at the Middle East - but certainly not for a lack of wanting to check out the show! (And, doesn't it figure - the band was looking for me in the crowd?!) But I did get a chance to see new favorites Georgie James (weirdly, another top ten album in 2007) at Great Scott ! (More on this awesome show later)

RECAP REVIEW:
The Willowz in Cambridge at TT the Bears, July 20, 2007

Probably one of the best live bands I saw this year... From Anaheim, California it's The Willowz. The four piece band (signed to Dim Mak records) played a damn tight live show at T.T. the Bear's in Cambridge's Central Square on July 20. They were the opener for the Detroit Cobras - but were so good, they could have been the headliners. Not only were Richie and Jessica great to talk to - they probably couldn't have done much better live. Everyone likes to talk about fusion acts. Generally these are alternative and ethnic beats or electronica with metal or rap... etc. The Willowz sound like southern rock with a touch of Led Zeppelin, the White Stripes and Kings of Leon mixed in for good measure. No matter what label anyone puts on them - the band is damn good live. A performance includes jams that allow one song to merge with another. This isn't a jam band, but you might not know it at times. The performances of all were energetic and fun - but, my god - Loren Shane Humphrey's drums killed! (Incredible work my friend!) The RSL "Best of So Far 2007 List will be published in these pages within the next two weeks - "Chautauqua" - the third record from the Willowz is a breakout release and it WILL be on the list. Pick it up and thank me later. (You will.)

Tonight's Can't Miss Show in Boston

I don't do enough of these "the day of" promos any more - I'm just too busy with my regular day job. But I just couldn't stop chatting up this show tonight. Washington D.C.'s Georgie James hit the city tonight (appearing at Great Scott with Aquaduct and Tulsa) and I would love to see a whole lot of you regular readers there. This band is an indie powerhouse and I predict by this time next year, they will be the name on the lips of many a hopeful hipsters.

The Main Event in Boston tonight: GEORGIE JAMES

This level of personal dedication on my part doesn't come without great merit. I recently named the band's Places album one of my top ten albums of the year. If that doesn't stir you alone, check out the profile I wrote up on the band back in September and listen to this track:

Very Fine - Todd Fancey of the New Pornographers releases a new album

Todd Fancey has just released another new solo project and its definitely worth checking out! Fancey, who sings plays guitars and keyboards for the New Pornographers, offers up "Schmancey" (Fancey Schmancey - get it?) and demonstrates his growing influence here as co-producer and writer. The songs on the new record are layered and ethereal - a product of the metaphorical sunshine they were born under. The album as a whole acts as a showcases Fancey's evident dedication to a harmonies and full, rounded sound. No where is this more evident than in the rich production values (think Brian Wilson on Pet Sounds) used to color the album...

Norman Mailer Rest in Peace - A musical tribute to the author who gave us "The Naked and the Dead."

One summer I was working near a college doing menial work. I was young and it was an exciting location. There were students - who while still far older than me, they were just starting out in this dynamic place of learning. I was glad to be there. One day I found a large stack of hardcover books on top of a dumpster. I made it a point to rescue these fine books and I would end up reading them all from front to back. One of these volumes was Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead." The story took on special important to me. My own grandfather (now since passed) was a WWII veteran in the Pacific Theater. He would never speak of his time there - he had lost too many close friends fighting on those islands. Norman Mailer spoke for people like him and told a bitter tale. Thanks Norman, Rest in Peace...
